Interesting that some things work for some people and not others. But it makes sense. What about fruit for your sugar fix? I believe the sugar in fruit is digested more slowly because of the fiber. Am I right, you diet mavens?

Fiber is good (you should be getting 25g MIN/day), but too much fructose is not. I have a crazy sweet tooth (especially for baked goods), and I know fruit would never cut it for me. But vaping baked goods seems to be working.

My trick to nutrition is to learn what the good [carbs/fats/proteins] and the bad [carbs/fats/proteins] are, and try to stay away from the bad. There's almost always a "good" substitution for the "bad" stuff you're craving. Like Uncle said, white rice is bad, but brown rice isn't (as bad). Regular pasta, especially when cooked wrong, is bad, but then there's Dreamfields. Sweet potatoes are better than regular potatoes. Vegetable oil is OK for salad dressing, but not for cooking. Whole grain flour is better than enriched flour. You can get crazy amounts of protein, fiber and potassium from beans, especially when combined with whole grain. Natural peanut butter (with just peanuts and maybe a little salt) is good, but Skippy/Jif is baaaad. And on and on...
Reading ingredient lists is good too. Stay away from "partially hydrogenated..." and "high fructose...," and the new substitutes they're coming up with (palm oil, Olestra...), and watch the sodium. For bread, if the first ingredient listed is "enriched flour," skip it.
And two spices I always try to put in: cinnamon (but some people need like 1+ tsp a day for it to work - that's a lot) and cayenne.
I've been doing this for so long that I don't have to worry about what I eat anymore (at least when I'm at home), and I'm at the healthiest I've been in a long, long time.

You said, "Vegetable oil is OK for salad dressing, but not for cooking." What about olive oil? I've been using that for cooking because I heard it had the good kind of fat, not the bad kind. I'm basically healthy, so I don't need to watch my diet obsessively, but I do like to make the wisest choice.

Beans are great, but what about the (ahem) gas? I try to avoid eating beans if I have to go out in public. I read someplace that adding ginger would reduce the gas, but it has never worked. How much ginger? I just added a little. Did I need to add fresh ginger, not the powdered kind? Maybe I should give it a try. I have some bean soup in the freezer and some fresh ginger that needs to get used up.

Can't stand exercise but I love getting something done:)

That is why living on 5 acres suits me.

I know what you mean about riding, SandySu. Doing stuff with your horse isn't a passive experience. Even in driving a cart you are fully present in the moment and remembering to sit up straight and adjusting the reins and such. Not to mention setting the horse up by walking it out, grooming and getting the harness parts on and then bringing the cart out and getting that on the horse. Not that it seems like exercise but it is:)

I garden, clean the goat and horse pens, haul water and wood, clean houses. Sometimes I herd the goats out back to graze on weeds or take that cute little horsey for a walk. The dogs like to go around the yard once or twice a day and look for mouses. Penny gets her exercise by digging up imaginary mouses [we call all the various kinds of rodents mouses]. If you say, "Is that a bunny?" Rusty the Red Dog will look everywhere for a bunny. Fortunately, we don't have too many rodents out there although the cat or one of the dogs does occasionally find themselves a prize. That is the way I like to exercise.

Good morning everyone!

My news today may be kinda boring to most of you, but I'm so excited about this. Due to my last blood work showing a higher than normal level of blood sugar I have to watch carbs. Last week I made a loaf of bread from almond flour and really liked it. It's not the same as bread made from wheat flour and yeast as almond flour can only be used for quick breads, but its pretty tasty.

So I ordered and received a book for baking with almond flour and today the supply of it I ordered will be delivered. By also substituting the sugar, I'll be able to make bread, pancakes, cupcakes, etc. without a high carb content. Not only are almonds low in carbs, they are also very nutritious. Ahhh, healthy and guilt free food that tastes good! Gotta love it.

I have been following Eat to Live by Dr Joel Fuhrman for the past 6 months. I've dropped 35 pounds and all of my blood work came back perfect 4 months into this eating style. Dr Fuhrman has a new book out: The end of Diabetes. You can find it on Amazon. I've not read it (thankfully I'm not diabetic) yet, but from what I understand, a lot of the lifestyle is very similar to Eat to Live.

Try soaking your beans overnight and rinse them well before cooking. This takes a lot of the gasses out. Not all, but it does tend to help.

I wonder why they felt that the T3 mouthpiece had to be so big! I mean honestly... even if it was round, it could have been smaller.. but that thing is HUGE. Was the designer drunk or something... tried to test it but couldn't find his mouth? Did they have a baby bottle fetish?
It all goes back to Sigmund Freud possibly??? He had a really good theory on this sort of thing. Uncle is much smarter than I am and can explain it better.Actually his oral fixation theory fits smokers/vapers very well I think

Just watching a Home and Garden show about a young couple moving to the Gold Coast of Australia, just georgeous surf, palm trees and views. Even with the heat it must be just wonderful, kinda like a tropical Caribbean Island on the coast.

I could never stand such heat! Here's a photo from another year, but it looks about the same now.
