Normally, I try to walk Spanky everyday, 3 of the 4 seasons, barring rainy days but now, it's more like 3-4 days a week. I hate winter... he loves it. Most winter days, he just goes out in the backyard.

Whisper and I go out for an occasional walk. I take her to the park where she runs and really gets exercise. I practically had to drag her out of the park today after 2 hours!

I feel bad for the dogs. Their mother is probably going to ship them off to her mother in Florida because she says she can't find a place to rent to dogs. I told her she needs to figure it out and whether or not she really wants them. Pawning them off on friends, especially with behavior problems is not the answer.

I'm vaping away. Already vaped 3ml this afternoon with countless beers. :) I know an analog won't take it away, but I just miss my old go to stress reliever "friend" right now.

My friend said that she was going to come out on Memorial Day to pick them up. I told her no, 3 months is too long to be taking care of them. She said she was going to talk to her ex and see if they can come up with a plan. I volunteered to take them 1/2 way if needed.

Well said statement! You have a kind heart... It may be necessary for YOU to set the end date.

I would not change my routine with Whisper at all, including the motocycle riding. I think both of you will need to keep that routine the same.

I figure I'd take her out for a ride here and there. I can't take all 3 on the bike to the dog park though. I plan on giving Whisper a lot of attention (not that she doesn't get it already) while they are here. I don't want her to think she's not my number one. :)

I just sent an email to my friend and asked her to think about her life and whether or not she wants her dogs to live with her. I also recommended her to find a Realtor to run the MLS for rentals that accept pets. She had a lot of excuses as to why she can't have her dogs with her. So much that it made me think she really doesn't want them, or she does but wants someone else to take care of them.

That's really sad if that's true because you seem to have more compassion for her dogs than she does. If they were mine, we all would stay together somehow. I couldn't just give them away like that but you can't allow them to disrupt your home or your life either.

Enough ranting... so sorry. Take care my friend. ;)

Hi Everybody.

Well, between unexpected visitors, going into work early and staying late, and becoming sick again yesterday, I haven't completed these inventories and I am sorry for those that are waiting.

This is the first time I have come back to this thread in a few days, and I am sitting here sweating with a fever, but just wanted to update everyone while I wait for the Nyquil to kick in. Dang 2nd time in about a month I have been sick, this one is slightly different than the last one. Probably because I work at a grocery store where everyone goes when they are sick to get meds and soup.

Anyway, haven't caught up on the last 30+ pages I missed, but pray everyone is doing ok.

Alrighty....take care.

There is also this site: http://www.rent.com/dog-friendly-apartments I helped a friend that has a chow find an apartment using these kind of sites.

Thanks JoAnn. I had similar circumstances when I left Maryland and moved to California. My 3 dogs were flown out in 3 weeks. And most of the waiting time was for my household goods to be shipped!

I never pawn my fur kid off to anyone to take care of. If I go out of town, I take Whisper to a pet hotel because I don't want to burden anyone because Whisper is a very high energy dog. But, that's me I suppose. I'm always self reliant and hate to ask favors.

All of this dog talk makes me want to share Whisper’s tale.

Whisper is a Miniature Pinscher au natural – she still has her tail and her ears. She was born in the area of Santa Clara, CA. When she was only a month or so old, she was placed in a shelter with her mother, brother, and sister for reasons unknown. A wonderful Min Pin rescue volunteer went to the shelter and picked them all up. Whisper’s human foster mom, Janice had 7 Min Pins of her own so she was a part of a very large foster family. Janice told me that Whisper was picked on by her foster brothers and sisters and was quite submissive.

I have been owned by two other Min Pins and two Chow Chows. I had put down my oldest Min Pin and my last living dog the week of Thanksgiving 2008. The year before that, I had to put my youngest epileptic Min Pin down because her seizures finally got out of control and her meds were not helping. I had told myself that I’d try to live without a pet for awhile. That feeling didn't last even a month. I knew I wanted another Min Pin, so I started looking online at breeders and then found a rescue group and they had a picture of Whisper. I knew the moment I saw her picture that I wanted her, so I set the wheels of adoption in motion. It felt like I was adopting a human because I had to fill out a long application then answer several emails filled with even more questions! After all the paperwork was done and several phone calls with the foster mom, we set up a day for Janice to do a home check and if all was ok, she’d leave Whisper with me. Everything was fine and Whisper waved goodbye to her foster family and settled in with me in Dec 2008. Within a few days, she had her routine down and was happy that it was only her and I.

I had a full hysterectomy one month after adopting Whisper and she was my constant companion when I came home from the hospital. She realized even at a young age, that I was hurting. She would lie beside me and watch TV with me. She still wanted to play, but seemed to understand that I couldn't play very long before I’d tire out. When I was allowed to start driving again, we’d go to the dog park and spend 3-4 hours a day. She would play with the other dogs while I enjoyed being outside and out of the house.

When Whisper was about 7 months old, she started favoring her left side. I thought she had been bowled over at the dog park by one of the bigger dogs. I took her to the vet. They ran blood tests and x-rayed her ribs. All test results came back fine. I took her home and gave her a baby aspirin to help with the pain. During that evening while I was asleep, Whisper pulled off a huge patch of fur on her left side to expose dead skin. I rushed her back to the vet and they took her back to work on her. Some awful thoughts went through my mind that I might lose her. The vet finally came to talk to me and said they started shaving and had to keep shaving until they shaved all of her fur off her entire left side from her front leg to her hind leg. They could only operate on 25% because she didn't have enough skin to close it up if they cut out all of the necrosis.

Then I was bombarded with all sorts of questions from the vet. They asked me about if I burned her, or had a heating pad for her, heating registers on the floor, or if she leaned up against my motorcycle exhaust pipe and such. It got to the point that I was furious and I thought they were thinking I abused my dog. This is the same vet that I used for my epileptic dog and went through years of giving my vet all of the research I could find on canine epilepsy! So, they sent a tissue sample to UC Davis Veterinary School for analysis. It came back inconclusive – it was either a burn or possibly an insect bite.

They operated on Whisper and then had to leave over half of her necrosis exposed, left on its own to heal. Whisper had to wear a cone device to keep her from pulling her stitches out. I found a great collar for her – a blowup doughnut type that goes around her neck and keeps her from reaching her wounds. She could get in and out of the dog door and was back to feeling normal. She had fought the cone constantly. I could always hear her coming wearing that doughnut making sounds “rumple rumple rumple”. She wore it for 4 months until all of her necrosis healed and there were no more scabs. She was a champ through the whole thing and never acted like it bothered her. It was very ugly to look at and my heart sank every time I looked at her.

So, she has a little side racing stripe. I don’t really notice it much anymore, but I am asked about it a lot. About 2 years ago, I was at the dog park and a lady was asking me about Whisper’s scar. She said that she knew what it was from – a Wolf Spider bite. The lady had been bit by one on the inside of her thigh and her skin died much the same way as Whispers. Since it was never confirmed what happened to Whisper, I tend to think this might have been the culprit as there are plenty of Wolf Spiders here in California.

Nevertheless, Whisper is fine and healthy today. She’s my constant companion and my best buddy. She rides on the motorcycle with me and makes people smile when they see the little dog wearing doggles on the back of my bike. People are always taking her picture and she hams it up whenever she sees a camera. I know she will never be stolen because of her scar – damaged goods in the eyes of a thief. No beauty contests for this little girl, and that matters not for me. She has stolen my heart and that is all that matters.

Things are slow here tonight, so I'll contribute another picture. Most people think milkweed is just plain ugly, but the flowers in spring smell wonderful, and when the seeds escape the pods on their little parachutes, there's beauty in that, too.

I like milkweed, Sandy. When I was a kid we knew where some grew and would go to get pods when they were ripe so we could release the seeds. Kids were more easily amused in those days. :) We called the puff balls money stealers.

You can make pretty Christmas tree ornaments from milkweed pods. I had a couple I bought at a PTA bazaar. The pods were slit vertically, painted gold and had mini Christmas scenes glued inside.

Sitting down, facing forward.
Jeesh, hit the hay early 'cause I haven't been feeling up to snuff and missed a ton!

Bling - I keep my batteries in "stock' condition. I do use labels on all my delivery systems, P-Touch, and they stay on even with washing everything in hot water. So if they're using a similar adhesive the bling should stay put.

Lizzie, I sure don't envy you with two dachshunds! My Great Aunt and my Grandmother both had a dachshund each, they lived together. One was a full sized, one was a mini. Both were spoiled rotten and over weight from being over fed. Long story short, I ended up with both of them, and we already had our own dog at the time, a mutt. Those were the two most stubborn dogs I've ever dealt with. I'm fairly big and have always been the pack leader with all of our dogs, but these two came from another universe, let alone planet.

Neither was house broken, properly, and I was very glad we had redone the floors to bare hardwood a few month before. It took almost six months of constant work to get them to go outside to do their business, even with the lead of our mutt who was house broken as a pup.

Neither wanted to run, play or exercise in any way. Our mutt would go out on the overhead run in the back yard for hours and chase moths and butterflies, birds or what ever. These two just sat on the doorstep and barked to come back in. The funniest scene was when my business partner decided to walk the full size one on a leash. My business partner is 6' 4" and weighs about 350 pounds. Compared to the dachshund, even the full size, he was like the Jolly Green Giant. He got the dog on the leash, out the front door and down the driveway to the sidewalk. It was a struggle, the dog kept planting its feet and refusing to walk, but he kept tugging an cajoling it along to the sidewalk. Once there, he started off down the sidewalk along the front of our house. The whole time I'm watching from the bay window in the living room. They went about ten feet, the dog planted its feet and slipped the collar right off. He kept right on going, unaware the dog was just sitting on the sidewalk. The picture of this 6'4" guy, in a dark three piece suit, head held proudly because he was able to get the dog walking on the leash, walking an empty collar and leash down the sidewalk is still in my minds eye after 40 years!

Don't worry about how many ml you're vaping, just keep vaping through it, please?
