Good morning, everyone. It's warm but rainy here today so it'll be an inside day, which my aches and pains appreciate. Too much heavy lifting yesterday. Coffee is on and there are always bagels around, pumpernikle, sesame and onion, and the toaster oven works well.

The tank I'm looking at is a "soft tank". It has a heavy mesh/canvas/polyester exterior shell. Inside are four layers of rigid 1" foam insulation and then a very heavy plastic liner. The result is a 200 gallon tank with an "R" rating of over 30. It's not a pressure vessel by any stretch of the imagination, but with a drainback system the storage tank is not pressurized. The Softank Kit - American Solartechnics, LLC.

My decision about collectors will get made either today to tomorrow. I need to check price and availability of tubing and fittings. I want to use 1" copper manifolds feeding 3/8" riser tubes. I think a 4'x10' panel will do the trick. If I buy commercial I'll use panels made for heating swimming pool water. They are not insulated so they are not as efficient in colder weather. If I were to put them inside an insulated enclosure stagnation becomes a problem...their temperature could easily rise beyond what they can tolerate without degradation or damage. Putting an automatic shutter in would solve that, but increases complexity and price. A homebrew collector made of copper and insulated would not get damaged by high temperatures during stagnation periods. (stagnation occurs when the tank temperature is high enough to reach its upper limit and shut the pump down draining the water from the system allowing the collector temperature to rise uncontrollably.)

Another decision is a heat exchanger. I've seen people using PEX tubing, as in a 250 foot coil, a coil of copper tubing and a tube inside a tube for heat exchangers. There are also commercially made exchangers available. I was thinking of using some hydronic radiators, sort of in a reverse application. The large fin areas should significantly improve heat transfer compared to just a simple coil of tubing. I may setup the base system, collector, pump and tank, then try a few different heat exchanger methods to see what works best for me.

Your ability to do this astounds me. When you get it set up, you have to let us know how it works. Will you have invented something new? Maybe you should patent it if you have.

Very ambitious Roland! When I built my solar room, the plans actually called for a massive storage tank under the floor similar to what you are taking about. An alternative was solid concrete just to absorb the heat and radiate it back during the night. I choose to just use a brick floor because of the cost, with fans to circulate the heat during the day. Of course I could have also used it to preheat the hot water before it went into the heater. Back then I had a forced hot air furnace with a separate hot water heater. My Rannai Hot Water Heater was only marginally more expensive than a traditional electric hot water heater, but of course I had to install a propane tank, however the installation of the propane tank allowed me to again hook up my gas fireplace which had been sitting idle for a couple of years. Like I posted before I only use about $300 to $350 worth of propane per year, so it is no too expensive to run. If I was 20 years younger, I would think about doing exactly what you contemplate.

Konstantine, let me know how the testing goes on the Efest 18650 and 18350 batteries. I've been using them in my Vamo since I got the Vamo and they seem to be working fine. I have nothing to compare them to, though. I get about 5ml out of either a stacked set of 18350-800s or a single 18650-2000 so there is something to be said for running at a higher supply voltage.

This solar water heater idea/project was supposed to be an inexpensive "fun" experiment, now it's turning into an expensive piece of technology. In the end, though, it will save some money on fuel and "help the Planet" so I guess it's worth the effort. Given what I've seen about copper coil heat exchangers I may just opt for that since it is simple and has no sharp edges. When I do the project I'm also going to move, and re-plumb, the electric water heater to move it about thirty feet closer to where we use most of the hot water, kitchen, laundry and Master bath. Right now its on the east side of the house so moving it will save some hot water, it takes forever to get hot water out of the Master bath on the west side of the house. I have to wonder why it was designed this way, at least in terms of efficiency.

Good Morning - Cafe Verona is in the kitchen. Have a cup:)

I hear you on the aches and pains, Roland. Yesterday was my one and one half cleaning job day. Saturday and Sunday were really nice out so I got a lot done around here like moving rocks. My arms are tired and sore. Today, aspirin is definitely on the menu:)

Your project sounds awesome, Awsum.

I'm going to town to do some major stocking up. Then, resting up for tomorrow when my round pen is scheduled to show up. Hubby got the day off since his shift is changing. I need to call up there and ask them if they are going to have my panels done and delivered. That way if they are behind, they will know to put me on the front burner. Yippy, a new way to play with my little horsey:)

Another beautiful day today. I hate when I am too wiped out to get anything done in the yard.

Today i tested the solar installation on the barn. Works perfect and batteries are fully charged with two panels only. 240Ah is the total capacity not 320.
Now finally the horses can read books at night.

Now you've got to get them a TV or radio so they can entertain themselves all night!

Lizzie, at least I can feel good about taking a slow day, it's raining so I can't finish moving the last half dozen of the heavy logs plus I need to go to Home Despot to pick up some treated 2x4 to put them on so they'll dry. Sweet gum is like splitting iron when it's wet, and not much better once it's dry. I took a few good, hard swings at a 20" log yesterday and all the splitting maul did was sink in about and inch and a half and stop, not even a sign of a split even starting. I'll go out later and get the elements for the water heater and the 2x4s, as long as it isn't pouring buckets anyway.

You must be excited to have the round pen coming. Maybe after the aspirin, you'll feel more like doing outside work, but take it easy today since you are strained from the other day. Spring is coming, and there will be more good days to get things done.

Today, I have to call around and find the best deal to have folding chairs delivered to Cornell's barn for the exhibition at the beginning of April. Remember? Vitor Silva is coming to do a clinic and demo with his horses. I hope I can get some photos, but the indoor ring there is pretty dark, as most are, so I'm not sure if they'll come out well.

I also must, must MUST start to get my tax info together! I hate doing it, and every year I procrastinate. It has to be done, so why not just get it out of the way?

It's rainy here, but I may go out to do a couple of errands later. Later in the week, snow is predicted again.

Actually, some barns have a radio on tuned to a music station because they believe it keeps the horses happier, especially if a single horse has to be kept in a stall all alone. Being away from the herd upsets some horses, while others don't seem to mind so much.

Was that a typo or a play on words? Home Despot? :)

At least your life isn't boring, Debra!

Lizzie, you've got to post some photos of the pen when you get it set up! I renamed your basic tobacco mix to RL4, love that stuff!

We like to call it Home Sleazo. I don't know why.

Yes, I will need a photo with Wiseguy kicking up his heels:)

Deb, every storm runs out of rain, sweetie. Hope gentle metaphorical breezes are back into your life soon!

Hey, how cool is that?!!!! RL4 -- loving it:)

A cup of coffee for the road and I am outta here.

I need some brightness on such a gray day, which is getting colder as the day progresses. I don't like this damp cold. So here are daffodils. I'm ready for some sunny spring days!

I may be wrong, but I think the purchaser doesn't need PayPal, just Kon does. You can purchase your SI stuff as you usually do and just put the coupon code in when you do. Then Kon is paid by SI with PayPal. Isn't that right, Kon?
Yes.

True. Here some of the tunes horses use to listen, they have youtube.
Tom Jones - She's a lady - YouTube
The Prodigy - Firestarter - YouTube
The Prodigy - Out Of Space - YouTube
Bee Gees - Stayin' Alive [Version 1] (Video) - YouTube
Let's Groove - Earth wind and fire - - YouTube
Michael Jackson - Billie Jean - YouTube

Do they actually watch? I never tried seeing if a horse would watch TV.

They did a study recently, and they found horses like classical and country better than hard rock. Weird what they find to do a study about, isn't it? Most barns I've been at, the horses' music choice is the barn owner's. I never noticed that they cared what music was playing, though hard rock with lots of disruptive sounds might be more disturbing to them. As I've said before, when you are riding, horses pick up on the rhythm of music, which I find interesting. They also like it when their rider sings to them, and they don't seem to care if you have a good voice or sing in tune. They just like the rhythmic murmuring. I guess if you belted out an operatic aria or something, they might be startled, but normal simple songs sung at a moderate volume, they enjoy.
