I was just wondering this same thing. Does anyone know which bottle manufactures use BPA, and which one's don't? I just looked at US Plastics, because I think most everyone uses their bottles, and couldn't find anything.
Most disposable water bottles are made of PET plastic (polyethylene terephthalate), the clear ones that soft drinks come in. The other kinds like milk jugs and 2.5 gal water canisters are usually HDPE (high density polyethylene)
PET/PETE does leach when heated or reused, though it's phthalates rather than BPA while the foggy [HD/LD]PE do not seem to leach carcinogens, even while they do sometimes affect taste if water is stored in them for long periods.
Clear reuseable water bottles are either polycarbonate (aka Lexan®), which leaches BPA, or Tritan® copolyester, that is BPA-free
Polypropylene is also a relatively safe plastic if you want to avoid BPA.
But beware of tinned food, as the epoxy linings inside all of the metal cans, including soda cans are made with BPA, and the sealed cans are autoclaved to sterilize the contents, so you are definitely getting a dose there.
