Any of y'all know anything about flat roof materials? I had a roofing guy out today to see about fixing a leak in my roof area that was originally part of the back porch. It's basically flat and it's been leaking on and off since I bought the house 10 years ago. It was replaced after Katrina along with the rest of the roof. According to the roofing guy, they shouldn't have used shingles on a flat roof, which actually kinda makes sense to me, lol. So I'm getting estimates to replace it, hence the question. :D

No idea about flat roofs. We don't have many of those around here ;-) Just put a new one on a few years ago, here. Went with metal so the snow slides off better (and it lasts longer than slate or shingle). That and it stands out since it's the only red roof in the neighborhood :2cool: He's right about the shingles, though, totally doesn't make sense on a flat roof as it would let too much water underneath them

Reidus-I have never seen a flat roof make it in the long run, they always cause problems. You won't like my answer but, here it is: Put in an 18 inch truss-just enough for a pitch to drain. I know, I know-In the long run it will cost less than the damage a flat roof creates over time. The heat during the summer and the storms during hurricane season leads to cracking and mold issues.
I feel the same way about sky lights. I always take them out-once the roof needs repair around them, nothing but trouble and money gets spent over and over and over…….

Would that I could. The problem is there's actually 2 separate roofs making up the porch roof; one flat and one pitched. And the pitched one overhangs the flat roof with about a 2 inch space between the 2. So there's not way to pitch the flat roof. :(
