Complete off the wall post, I think everyone will enjoy the post. This is an email exchange between us and a tenant today…..Ok-I had the best laugh at a beautiful new floridians expense today!!!!!!!!!!
Tenant: We had a bit of a situation this morning and I'm seeking advice. So far, we have absolutely loved the community, but this morning, I saw a cockroach the size of a mouse in the ba
throom and I almost passed out! I've never seen anything like it before. I would like to get a hotel for a couple of days and have the place bug bombed, and I'm absolutely okay with taking on the cost of this ourselves. I just wanted to reach out and run this past you first.
In hindsight, now that the thing is out of sight and I can think clearly, it was actually kind of funny. I was standing on the bed screaming and hubby was laughing so hard he was crying and in the midst of all the chaos, he says, "Welcome to Florida!" I guess I'm getting what I asked for.
I have zero experience with this, so I would welcome any recommendations you may have.
Our response: Your reaction is fairly common for many people who have never lived in Florida. . First of all, 'bug bombing' your condo is not going to help anything because Palmetto Bugs do not originate inside buildings...they enter
through doors, drains and windows. . Although they appear large, they can actually get inside through incredibly small spaces [they can also fly for short distances] but often just enter doors and windows when they are open. . Sometimes they enter in ways that are downright mysterious [attached to objects you bring inside that have been outside.]
Although there is nothing you can really do to completely prevent this [most of Florida is just a drained swamp], the most effective prevention is to periodically spray window sills and around doors [not just the bottom...all the way around] with a high quality insect spray called BENGAL, which you can purchase at Home Depot.
It's not your community...it's Florida. . They have a regular outside pest control service which sprays the exterior of all buildings on a regular basis. .But it's sorta like mosquito prevention: you can spray all you want, but Mother Nature cannot be entirely suppressed. .10 million dollar homes on the ocean have the occasional Palmetto Bug.
Without laughter, there is much wisdom in what hubby says: Welcome to Florida. .You will learn to wear sunglasses on a cloudy day in the summer, and you will learn to use high quality hair conditioner. . It just goes with the territory.
I fished a Palmetto Bug out of our bathtub last week. .No kidding. .Tina just says: ...THERE'S ONE IN THE TUB.
Tenant: Lord have mercy! They can FLY?! I might have a heart attack. We will pick up some Bengal today..
