Do they have to go together? Let's say I wanted to do a quad coil 1.5 ohm Helios? Would that produce clouds or do I have to be below an ohm?

1: No they do not have to go together.
2: 4 six ohm coils; well, you'd probably want to plug into your 12 volt car battery.
depending on wire gauge you'd want about 50 to 100 watts.

You can make some nice clouds without going subohm, if using a VV device. I just set up a dripper for my zmax. 1.6ohm I think, twisted 32 coil. it is 9 wrap micro on a 5/64 drill bite. At 6v it will throw clouds almost as big as my mech with a .6ohm coil.

6 volts at 1.6 ohms = 36/1.6 = 23 watts
4 volts at 0.6 ohms = 16/0.6 = 27 watts

Yup; close enough.

Yeah... but what APV with a 6 volt range does more than 15 watts? There are a few 20-30 watt devices that are pretty common..

Edit- but then again, you're not getting 4 volts for long... if you're even getting that whole 4 volts.^

The zmax and vamo can be set for 6 volts max or 15 watts max.

6 volts on a 1.5 ohm coil works out to 24 watts, and 4 amps.
Now the vamo max output current is 5 amps, so although you can't set it to work 15 watts in VW mode, seems to me you could get as much as 24 watts in VV mode.

Vamo specs:
•Built in OLED display showing menu, function and selection
•Variable wattage - can be adjustable from 3.0W to 15.0W (in .5W increments)
•Variable voltage - can be adjustable from 3.0V to 6.0V (in .1V increments)
Maximum current output: 5A
•Reverse polarity protection
•Check atomizer/clearomizer/cartomizer resistance(1.5-5.0ohm)
•Thermal Monitoring
•Time limit protection function
•Bottom vent hole
•510/eGo threading connector
•Compatible with 510 and eGo threaded atomizers/clearomizers/cartomizers
•Can be powered by 1*18350 battery/2*18350 batteries/1*18650 battery (batteries sold separately)

zmax specs:
•Variable wattage - can be adjustable from 3.0W to 15.0W (in .5W increments)
•Variable voltage - can be adjustable from 3.0V to 6.0V (in .1V increments)
•0.6-inch screen shows:(Output voltage, power, resistance, battery voltage, power on/off, LCD on/off)
•Short circuit protection
4 Amperage output limit
•Low resistance protection (below 1.2ohms)
•Low voltage protection below
•RMS&Mean voltage settings
•The ability to charge a mobile telephone (via adapter)
•Removable top cap
•510&eGo threading
•Can be powered by single 18350/18500/18650 battery (batteries sold separately)

guess it depends on the amp limit te device has. If you set it for 15W it will do 15w, but if the device has a higher amp limit it might be able to push harder in volt mode. That being said I think most of these VV mods have a limit of 3.5amps

I've measured a smok zmax, vape-pro, mvp and vv3... all didn't do the set voltage.. stayed at maximum power level.. well below amp limit.

I can't find it, but I think baditude even stated that the provari doesn't exceed 15 watts.

Yep, I can't push any of my provaris past 15.6 watts, regardless of the current.

Maybe it's me, but I just don't get the whole "sub-ohm" or "blowing clouds" thing.

Call me simple, but I'd much rather find the sweetspot- where my juice shines- with optimum flavor, satisfying throat hit, and just the right amount of vapor

Thank you

if you don't get subohming and clouds, you should probably stay out of threads like these and stick to the flavor chaser threads.

cloud chasing is a hobby much like motorcycles/mountain climbing/rc racing/video games/fishing/etc. some people get it, some people don't.

i quit cigarettes because of cloud chasing, and i'm sure a bunch of other people have also. my daily setup is a 0.9-1.0 ohm single coil genesis, but i do keep a 0.2 ohm dual coil dripper around to blow clouds once in awhile. it's enjoyable in a similar way smoking hookah is enjoyable with a bunch of friends.

Everybody who sub ohms isn't necessarily a cloud chaser. I spent a good deal of my smoking career smoking pipes and cigars. Actually, more years than I smoked cigarettes. Consequently, I like a big, full flavored vape; not just for the clouds, although the big clouds come with it. A dual coil dripper or dual coil mesh genisis, between .4 and .5 ohms give it to me.

Agreed... Sub ohming is great for us that smoked harsh cigs, and cigars. I just don't find any thing over a ohm to give me the taste, vapor or warmth I need to stay of analogs.... A few years ago when I started Vaping, no one was sub ohming... And I fell of the wagon several times. Since I switched to mechanicals and RBA at low ohms ....no desire for analogs!! At 50, I found what works to keep me smoke free... And for me that is sub ohms and some big clouds!

I get the best flavor from my subohm builds. Plus I like a warm vape. really dont care to much about teh big cloud, but teh flavor, warmth and throat hit are what I like about it
