coil question

I just got a Sigelei100w and built my plume veil with a 24gauge dual coil setup w/ 10 wraps each, hitting .5ohm, and running it at about 60watts, and after I hit it, the unit seems to keep vaping for a second. Now it doesn't seem to do this with my 1.7ohm single 28gauge coil on my big dripper or my magma.

So, I was wondering if this is happening because of the heat the coils retain, or is there a possible problem/short? Now my ohm meter on my unit says .5, and not getting any check atomizer signs, but since I am real new to this I figured I had best ask.

I made the coils at 10 wraps so I could have some decent surface area, while keeping the ohmload reasonable.

It's probably just residual coil heat. At that lower resistance, you'll be running a fair bit hotter than with the >1.5ohm coils.

Since you are running a regulated device, the chances of a short being present are low (the unit should not let you fire if there is one). There is, however, a chance that the unit is autofiring, but this should be obvious - the unit would indicate that power is being delivered. If it isn't (i.e., your switching is working) and the device lets you continue to vape without throwing errors, and you do not see signs of heat buildup in the sigelei, you should be okay.

Yup;; you've got what, maybe 4 to 8? times more mass of kanthal in there with the 24 gauge dual coil than with the 28 gauge single coil.

thanks guys, I appreciate it. I just had not noticed it until tonight, but light isn't staying on after I let go of the button, and it isn't doing it with the lower ohm coil. Always better to be safe than sorry.

Kinda new to the forums guys, I cant find a thread explaining the difference with different coils. Bigger coils is more heat? I'm familiar with V=IR but I'm just trying to figure out what gauge I should buy.

More power running to the coil = more heat. On a regulated mod, you just kick up the power with a button. On a mech you build it to lower resistance to get more power. You choose what gauge of wire to use by balancing surface area, resistance and warmup times. Lower gauge wire will let you get more surface area at the expense of longer warmup time. Thinner wires will have less surface area with the same number of wraps, but response time is better. Then there's the difference in flavor between different gauge wire.

Just play around and find what you like.
