Should be titled "Hypocrisy at it's finest" or "Hit 'em hard except when it hits home"

That's about all I can say right now about it since I can't use the language I have for this type of #$!(*$ here.

Excerpts: (Bolding by me)

“State attorneys general have, and will continue, to work to protect youth from the dangers of tobacco use. State attorneys general have advocated for the FDA to promptly issue regulations addressing the advertising, ingredients, and sale to minors of electronic cigarettes (also known as e-cigarettes). We have noted the rapid increase in the marketing and sale of e-cigarettes to minors, and them is information among minors regarding the safety of e-cigarettes. The FDA's leadership in regulating e-cigarettes is warranted and is a proper use of its regulatory authority

“However, I believe it is unnecessary, improper, and potentially unintended to implement such a broad scale regulatory scheme that would fail to account for the unique position of the J.C. Newman Cigar Co. The proposed one-size-fits-all regulatory scheme would be onerous for the J.C. Newman Cigar Co. by damaging the company's ability to make new products by having to go through testing procedures it cannot afford. The current regulatory framework encompassing J.C. Newman Cigar Co.'s unique, hands on manufacturing of premium cigars with seventy-five year old machines sufficiently balances all the relevant interests .J.C. Newman Cigar Co. already takes numerous steps to keep its product away from minors by selling its product in specialty shops and not marketing to minors. “

“Elected officials, Democrats and Republicans, from across the nation, including U.S. Senators, over two hundred U.S. Congressman, and Florida's Governor and Lieutenant Governor have weighed in support of changing the proposed regulations to exclude premium cigars

And here I thought it was about public health. Silly me. Are cigars made on 75 year old machines less harmful than other tobacco products? Oh, I forgot it "sufficiently balances all the relevant interests" (such as lung cancer, I suppose). If I make my mods with 75 year old hand tools, can I keep them?

J.C. Newman Cigar Co. already takes numerous steps to keep its product away from minors by selling its product in specialty shops and not marketing to minors.

So has 99% of the e-cig industry.

ETA: Wow, you can order them online, too:

This has got to be the most hypocritical comment I've seen yet :grr: All but one (the company's age) of the reasons they list for exemption of premium cigar companies also apply to e-cigarette companies. Our industry's companies also tend to have small numbers of employees, produce quality products that are uniquely and carefully designed, take great pains to avoid sales to minors by doing business in specialty shops, etc... But I suppose that is all safely ignored as long as e-cigs are not the products that people in power happen to be using

I had to comment, and just offer a general LOL

as a FL resident..our AG is a disgusting, hypocrite, a laughable joke. her comments REEK of dollars paid.. to her and her PAC.. by interests large.. but that's all gov today. Im clear that all here should understand very well... there is ZERO interest in safety.. the entire focus is.. who pays the most to get what they want.. large scale systems, be it Gov or corps today.. are focused primarily on EXTORTION

her comments, demanding regulation, made my a anti regulation authority.. are nothing short of laughable.

again, the entire effort will be based on extortion...

The cigar thing is amusing to me in a way...and I'll explain.

When my son was in high school he was on the basket ball team.
They smoked cigars...because if they were to get caught smoking cigarettes they would have been kicked off the team !

Kids are gonna do what they are gonna do

Knowing that Florida has a large Cuban population I would assume that there are probably a large number of small cigar manufacturers located there. I think I would have to ask the question, although I already know the answer, why only J.C. Newman Cigar Co was singled out. Think there might be some political connections here?

I will probably get "flamed" for saying this, but regulations that we won't like are coming. The decisions have already been made as to what they will be. I'm sure there are a couple of "throw away" regulations that the FDA will dismiss to make us feel like we won something but those have already been decided also. The "Comments Period" we just went through are just a way to make us feel like we are doing something. I haven't researched this, but one would probably be hard pressed to come up with any FDA regulation that has been "tabled" due to consumer comments. BT and BP pay the money in advance so it never reaches the table. Our only hope will be litigation, but whoever takes on that task better have extremely deep pockets. If, in some unlikely situation, the FDA was defeated, you still have local, state, and federal potilicans who see nothing but dollar signs. Nicotine juices will be taxed the same as cigarettes. I read in another post on this forum where under Gov Christie's (NJ) plan a 30 ml bottle of premade juice would cost arount $100.00. Every bottle of juice or ingredient for DIY we purchase takes away tax money that most States have already spent.

I'm old so I won't have to be concerned as long as some but I have been stocking up on Nic. We have 2-3 years to get ready. Like most other things in life, you have to take care of yourself. You're not going to get Nic Stamps. Think about it.

Food and Drug Administration oversight of the United States cigar industry is threatening J.C. Newman Cigar Co., the last major producer of cigars in Tampa, Florida, a city that was built by tobacco. The 119-year-old company does not intend to go down without a fight.
