Concered about the safety of a battery

I have a riva battery that has developed a strange problem. At the bottom of the battery you can see that the casing is beggining to warp. It developed an indent along with a small crack that was not there before. I have no idea why this is happening and it isnt a cosmetic concern, but Im wondering might there be something going wrong that I should be concered about?

And please dont say "ya, thats what happens right before it blows up". LOL..

Okay not even funny! I got stranded on a lake fishing without a lighter one time, when my uncle bent over to net a fish and plop it went! We arched the battery to light a cig and had to chain smoke between the two of us all night!
