I'm new to the rta world. Pretty sure I got building my own coils down. Only problems so far is how to get a consistant amount of cotton for wicking. I'm using Cotton Bacon which comes in strips and you break the strips down to smaller usable strips. Most videos I have seen they are getting 8 wicks per strip. Also, they are just tearing the strips to get usable size wicks. When I do this the amount is always different. Can you just use scissors? I thought of buying pre-sized cotton but I am trying to prepare for doomsday and think learning would be best. Thanks....

Cut it or tear it. It's a feel kind of thing that comes with practice.
How much in the coil? How much in the tails?
It will drive you nuts.
Stick with the one rta until you get the feel for it.
Persevere. Patience. Practice.
Don't throw the RTA against the wall.
Watch Youtube vids.

When you get it right and realise you don't like the RTA, throw it in the bin and get another.
What have you got???? My suggestion if I may is learn on Japanese cotton pads first. I use Muuji. They are much cheaper and easier to learn with then you can try the fancy expensive stuff.

Scissors are fine. I've found that "unrolling" the bacon strips was easier and yeilded more consistent results. I would try to fluff the strip, and thus, even out any denser portions.

Rayon would be easier, cheaper, and vapocolypse resistant, IMHO.

Japanese Muji, Koh-Gen-Do or Organic Puff Cotton pads, the last being my favorites, are much easier to work with than all kinds of those so called "premium cottons".
Just remove the thin and compressed outer layer, cut it to the width you like, roll it gently and feed your coils.
Depending on the inner diameter of the coil I get about 3-4 wicks per pad, so 180 pads of Puff for about 9$ will last you a very long time.

+1 for starting out with KGD pads, magnitudes easier to learn with. Use those for a few months and then move on to other wicking materials. While I prefer removing the outer skins ir isn't necessary, they wick just fine. I found the scottish roll worked well for me once I started using higher vg juices.

@Ace80s, for Rayon there's a couple of different sources.

Graham's Cellucotton Rayon and Tidi non sterile Rayon balls are the main 2 that you can source easily. From what I've been hearing from the Rayon thread, Tidi is the better choice if you have the option.

If you go onto the Rayon thread, you may be able to get someone to send you a small quantity.

I wouldn't cut the wad. If you did you'd end up with a bunch of severed strands. Just spread out the wad a bit, then pinch in the center and draw off the amount you think you need. Test-fit it in the coil. If it's too much, reduce it in the same way. Then snip it in half lengthwise and you're set to wick two coils. If you've only got a single coil then save one half for next time.

I use cotton bacon prime,i take a strip, cut it in the middle, then take one from the two pieces and open it like you open a book and want both sides have the same thickness. Then I use my scissors to cut the required amount for my coil. After a few attempts you'll get the hang of it.

I think the most important thing to know is the signs and symptoms of correct and incorrect amounts. Only time and many rewicks will let you know how to do it on a consistent basis and to know the symptoms of different amounts is key. With my rtas at 20ish watts, if I dont have enough cotton/rayon in coil I will get a bit more snapping, a bit more sizzle, and eventually dry hits. If I use too much, a bigtime loss of flavor. I suppose you can get dry hits from too much, but for me personally, I haven't. Wicking is more than just how much is in coil, but also how much in the tails that are placed in channels. You can have perfect amounts thru coil, but if they arent placed in channels properly, the vape suffers. Also if tails are too long, to dense, too thin, etc, the vape will suffer. On top of all this, each rta is different and requires a different technique. So keep asking questions, watching videos because all this helps, but the only real way to be efficient is time and patience....good luck because once you got it, you got it and are well rewarded

I switched to Sally's Rayon and never went back to cotton. One box is a multi-year supply.

Still a KGD fan but have been using wotofo angleted strips lately and very happy with it. Rayon is a pita and since my diy juices run clean and don't gunk up the wicks not worth the extra effort for me. Just about always need a dry burn before I need a new wick these days.

I could not wick a freaking RTA to save my life until I discovered rayon. I have yet to encounter an atomizer rayon has not beat.

It does have other advantages, cheap as dirt, withstands high heat better (if wicked right) and lasts longer than cotton. Some folks complain of the rayon taste but if you saturate you wick with eliquid and fire the coil a few times (I usually do this now by tucking the tails) well, there will be no rayon taste.

As a chronic over stuffer, I tend to like rayon as it shrinks when wet while cotton expands.

Might want to give it a shot, although you've gotten some great cotton suggestions on this thread.

Best of luck. I thought mounting a coil was hard, then I discovered they Joy of Wicking.
