- I sure don't want to step on anyone's toes but where is the creative thinking.

How bout this? Just thought of it today.

We submit comments (anonymously) to the FDA written in vein of:

Please don't take my mommy and daddy away from me. Both quit smoking because of electronic cigarettes 2 years ago, right after grandpa died from some lung thingy. We all cried that day but are happy now. Daddy plays with me almost everyday now and mommy is much happier. I don't know what they would think of me writing to you, but I just wanted to ask you to not take them away from me. My little sister and I are so glad they aren't smoking and are in good health now.

You should probably also add something about how their house smells so much better now, and mommy and daddy do too; children are very sensitive to smells. That's why baby products have that ubiquitous very mild "baby powder" "baby shampoo" smell, though they're finally getting a clue about the soporific effects of lavender, and using that in some baby products.

Kids today can't do math without a calculator and are fat because of fast and junk food and not playing outside in the dirt. I won't go into how I walked 5 miles barefoot in 3 ft of snow to get to school; but I did go to school and teachers could disipline and we actually learned. Instead of protecting the children so much maybe they should let parents disipline again and let them live to enjoy their grandchildren.

pardon the typos, on my phone :)

Submitting this kind of stuff to the FDA is fine & dandy, but obviously don't make it your only submission...

This sort of stuff is better suited towards the general public..

Think of it as the counter-measure to the "poison by the barrel" garbage..

And it would definitely help sway public opinion...

Amen!!! I always had the feeling that public school was just taxpayer-supported babysitting; I'm pretty sure that my son learned just as much, if not more, from all the books he's read (VORACIOUS reader), all the Discovery and Nova and natGeo TV shows we enjoyed together, and really weird stuff like letting my 12 yr old stay up till 5am so we could go out in freezing weather to watch meteor showers. Parents these days seem a lot more concerned with making those almighty dollars than in interacting in any really valuable way with their own children -- they farm them off to strangers rather than having one parent be a stay-at-home parent, just so both parents can go out and make more of those almighty dollars.

And don't even get me started on these women with the crazy idea that they can be both mother AND father. Sure, some women are forced to that by death or divorce, but it's certainly not PREFERABLE. I didn't really like my stepfather much, but it's a fact that home life became a lot more "regular" after he was part of the family.

Over-protecting children is NOT a good thing; how will they learn, if they never get to do ANYTHING? Yes, sometimes they make mistakes, but that's just another way to learn, and it's one of the best ways to make sure the lesson sticks. Errors are to learning what microbes are to the immune system.

I always thought this mess started with bicycle helmets.
But now I'm thinking it started somewhere before that even.

You are wise beyond your years.

People try to avoid germs like the plague these days.
I collect germs, and if you drop your slice of pizza on the ground, I'll still eat it.
:)

Trying to beat Darwin at his own game is a losing proposition.

When we "protect the children" from things, especially stuff like tobacco, it just makes them that much more appealing when they reach those rebellious teenage years.

I started smoking when I was about 14 years old. That was in the mid-1980s, when the anti-smoking/anti-drug agenda machine was really cranking up ("Just say no!").

I smoked because I wasn't supposed to, plain and simple. That's what made it fun. Its human nature.

Seems nobody in government ever thinks about that angle.

EDIT: I also wanted to thank wv2win (OP) for taking the time to contact his Senator and posting the juicy bits!

Absolutely! The newest research is beginning to realize all of this "safety first" nonsense have created several generations of entitled, hypochondriac sissies with no imagination, initiative or sense of adventure.

Or wait... perhaps this is what "they" were after... a risk-averse population of sheeple who are diligent, tax-paying worker drones and willing to quietly relinquish all freedom and privacy in the name of being protected by the gubmint.
