YAY!!! :)

You have to be careful. Ian had a kid that picked on him in elementary school, and the teacher never did anything about it. She even had them sitting next to each other. Ian's a lot like me, he's really laid back, but when he reaches his limit, it's not pretty. One day the kid was stuffing grass in Ian's shorts, and he reached the limit, grabbed the kid's arm and twisted it up behind his back. He broke the boy's arm, technically a spiral fracture, and it's a damned good thing I was friends with his mom or we could have been sued and had Ian thrown out of school. Oh, and Ian was a black belt in tai kwon do and knew better than to use any of that on him.

So the next bully was in middle school, and was smacking Ian with a jump rope handle in gym class. Ian managed to grab the rope and took it away, but the kid decided to do a sneak attack. It ended up with Ian on the floor and the kid having to get pulled off of him by the gym teacher, twice. Zero tolerance escalated it to having to go to court, which kept getting delayed until summer when none of the witnesses were available. Ian ended up with community service for defending himself. BTW, he was 6'4" and about 250 lbs at the time, the bully was about a head shorter than him. The judge couldn't believe the kid started the fight. :grr:

Unfortunately this happens a lot. Kids that are only trying to defend themselves end up getting in trouble. I know I've told the school countless times that one day Alex is gonna get tired of being the .... of all jokes, being called a ......, or being pushed around and he's gonna fight back. In that case I told them to do what they needed to do but don't expect me to sit back and quietly accept it. I even called one parent one time and asked them if they were aware that their child was bullying a child with autism. Not sure what that parent did but that kid left him alone after that.

I may be a timid mouse when it comes to myself but mess with my kids and that's another story. Let's just say that the county special education director knows me by name. Unfortunately when you have kids with special needs you have to fight extra hard to get what they need.

Parents can get weird when you tell them their kid is a bully. There was a kid when we lived in HI that was a year or 2 older than Ian, that I actually saw punch Andrew in the stomach when he was 4 years old. That would have made this kid 9 or 10. I went over to his house and told his mother, expecting her to call him inside (he was riding his bike in the street in front of his house at the time), but she totally blew it off. The only thing that kept me from making his life a living hell was that he was caught by base security setting fires in empty housing units about a week later. Didn't see him outside after that. :)

I wonder what makes kids into bullies?

You're right. A lot of parents don't want to hear it and don't believe you if you tell them. I don't usually play the "disability card" but if your child is low enough to pick on a kid when they know they have a disability, then by goodness I'm not gonna sit by silently. I just happen to know this kids mom that I called and got lucky with her response.

I just thought of something that I thought might be pertinent to understanding my position on why I get so worked up about school situations. I DO NOT expect my kids to get "special" treatment because they have special needs. I expect them to be given the same opportunities as others that don't have disabilities. Far too often they fall through the cracks. Most parents that have kids in special education have to fight to get what their child needs. Not all of them do it and that's how they fall through the cracks. By law the schools have to provide accomodations and modifications to students with disabilities. This is NOT to lower the bar or give them special treatment. This is meant to level the playing field so to speak. I don't know if that makes sense to you but I just don't want anyone to think that I expect the school system to treat my kids special. I expect them to educate them and do it the way that they need to learn.

Can you tell this is a huge soapbox of mine?

*sheepishly holds up hand* I was "Grace" too.

Tiff, I understand it. My sis fights the same fight. She just wants her child to have the same chances as the other children. Not to be stuffed in the back of the class and ignored. It may take a different tact to teach him, but he's bright, just needs the teacher to present the material to him in a way he understands. My sis is dyslexic. School for her was a nightmare. She was the kid you see being dragged in, screaming and wailing.

I was one of the kids that got picked on with no mercy. First year of high school I finally lost it, caught my main tormentor across the street from the school and proceeded to beat the living snot out of her. Yes, I did end up in the principals office, but it was worth it. The mean girls all gave me wide berth after that.

Bad parenting/broken home. Almost every single time. They have to learn it somewhere.

Makes perfect sense. My Step Mother is a special needs teacher in Salina, Oklahoma. Well, was. She got laid off because she was demanding too much from the school and the kids' parents. The stories that she has about the school district's incompetence boils my blood. A lot of absentee parents that are drug addicted (mostly m eth, some H eroin) and absolutely neglectful. She's had CPS involved numerous times.

OK, I've been drinking and now I'm rambling.
