Facts about Memorial Day
Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day.
Decoration Day was suggested by General John A Logan, leader of a civil war veterans association. The first Decoration Day was held on 30th May, 1868. The reason for this choice was that no battle had taken place on this day.
Todays participants would have recognized some of the common celebrations of Memorial Day. One the first ever Decoration Day, there were speeches and soldiers graves were decorated.
By 1890, each northern state was marking Decoration Day as an official state holiday; celebrations took place on different days in the southern states.
The origins of Memorial Day go back to the Civil War, when more lives were lost than in any other war in US history.
Waterloo, New York, which held its first celebrations of the day in 1866, was named the birthplace of Memorial Day by the federal government.
Decoration Day evolved into Memorial Day and was gradually extended to include all American military personnel who had died in different wars.
Memorial Day was celebrated on May 30th for almost a century. The date changed to the last Monday in May following the passing of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act in 1968.
The day became a federal holiday in 1971.
Some of the biggest Memorial Day parades are in Washington, D.C., Chicago, and New York.

I'm on the west coast AND slept in. That makes me the last one to the party. Good morning, all!
Shoot, I'm just getting out of bed and it's noon here.
Took the kids out to see Star Trek in 3D last night, but we went to a late showing so we didn't even get home until nearly 1am. I was hoping the kids would sleep in, but something even more beautiful and rare happened... They got up on their own, made themselves breakfast, and have been playing together sweetly.
I've really just been laying here awake for the last half hour listening to how good they're being. I guess I need to get up and make lunch.
Normally on the weekends I wake up to kids bouncing on my bed demanding breakfast and attention. This is nice. I'll have to treat them to ice cream or something today. I have the best kids ever.

I've been up and running since 7, just now logging in. We watched the Longmire marathon last night, there were three that I had missed during it's season. And will be making snacks for the first one of season 2 tomorrow. I like that show.
Anyhoo, off to buy the fencing today. We aren't required to fence around the pool (which I did order from Sears) but to be on the safe side, we are doing it anyway. A few summer people in the area have small grandkids. Highly doubtful that they would wander through the woods and plop into our pool, but I'll feel better if they can't.
And I need a new tea kettle while I'm out and about. For some strange reason mine thought it was Old Faithful this morning. Boiling water shot straight up almost a foot!
My stove top is extra clean now.
