I think what they are trying to figure out is how your getting 8.65 volts out of a ptr08100 chip when they are designed for a out put of .06 to 5.5 volts. With your 200 ohm pot dialed to 0 ohms you should be getting 5.5 volts not 8.65.

You were right roadrash, it was the ground. When I had the components laid out on my bench, I had the top cap off which was what I needed to complete the ground for the circuit board. Now with the 220 fixed resistor and the 200 ohm pot, I get 3.6 volt to 6.1 volts. Unfortunately I broke the 3a CK push button switch after threading it into the pipe for the 3rd time trying to get the parts aligned better. Dam, paid 6.49 at MV. Bought the same for my first mod at Digi-key for $5

Update:
Searched thru my pile of old computer parts and found several push-buttons. I found an exact replacement for the broken CK switch at 3 amps at 12 volts.
Okay mod completed and I am set at 4.23volts with a 2.8 ohm atty I found.
I got to say, it's a bit long at 6".

Glad you got it close to spec. But seeing as even 220Ω may be bit low, I don't think I'd use one that actually measures only 190Ω (off by 15%).

If you are planning more projects you can get a lot of various values (5% tolerances) here at a good price.

Got to say that the range of 3.6v to 6.1v seems pretty good. And at 6" long this would be handy to carry around for self defense. LOL.

oK, Jumping in again with both feet.:p
with the Vr set to zero, you should not get more than 5.5 volts:The default.confused:
No big deal if its working, Less than a volt.:2cool:
Also, My Shlong 3/4 pipe mod is 15 " long with every thing attached.:>)

I don't think that's the case, or they just would have presented it like the booster, which has voltage values listed but for the default 5V says 'open'.

The resistance is lower than the 241 ohms for 5.5 v at 190 ohms, hence the 6.1v reading.

Willy, you have a point. but from what I gather you should not be able to get more than 5.5 volts from this unit no matter whot.

sure would be nice if we could tear the ever cool expert away from his **** TO HELP WITH THIS.:>)

I understand, that was my point, and it may not make a lick of difference, but as I noted the datasheet says 5.5V max.

Will operating it outside of it's specification make any difference? Probably not as TI builds robust chips that are probably conservatively rated. And seeing as our use is intermittent anyway it's probably a non-issue.

You should not construe any of this as a knock, it's just a discussion between modders, oh yea and roadrash. :)

Jumping into this thread. Very nice on the VV. I gotta build one.

Hey Rockproof, I'm hoping to take apart the V.V. and take some photos today. The parts are really crammed in there. Last time I took it apart a broke the switch that I had threaded into the tube. With the replacement switch I used the nut to install it. Not as nice looking as one that was threaded and flush mounted.
