Some do it to remove any leftover "stuff" from the manufacturing process, some can taste a difference between boiled and non-boiled organic cotton. Some just use them straight out of the pack.

My story: I had some stray cotton balls in the closet that I tried vaping with, and the first attempt (not boiled) tasted horrible. That's my fault, I had no idea where they came from.

I went out and bought a bag of organic cotton balls, and boiled a small quantity just because of my first experience. After I'd used the ones that I boiled I tried one straight out of the bag and could not tell a difference, so I no longer boil them.

Whether they actually need to be boiled gets debated on here quite a bit.

I boiled regular (non-organic) cotton balls, and got a faint whiff of chlorine from the pot. I don't think "organic" really means it doesn't have other stuff in it. After all, one of the first things I do every morning is take an organic on the big white phone.

Boiling it (or at least washing it) isn't a horrible task. (Soaking in hot water might be better than boiling; the boiling tends to tangle stuff up a lot).

I prefer rayon, which has already been purified.

I'm still relatively new but have switched from an aerotank to a Kayfun lite V2 and really like it. I'm doing micro coils at around 1.8 ohms and recently switched from eckowool to organic cotton. I find it has more flavor and less break in and I'm almost exclusively vaping NETs. So I've got some of the Japanese organic cotton on order--should I boil that too? Thanks in advance and this forum has been a world of information and insight for me.

For some it is a serious placebo effect. I too tried the regular cotton balls. YUCK!!! Boiled/unboiled it was just gross.

I then got the organic cotton balls from Walgreens. Maybe a slight cotton taste during wick break-in but that was short lived and then it vaped just fine for the rest of its life.

Now I am using rayon straight from the box. No break-in just pure vaping goodness from the first draw.

I spoke with a worker at a B&M the other day and he said that Rayon choked him up!? He said something to the effect that he doesn't trust man made stuff. Rayon is a fiber that comes from organic materials and is processed just like cotton. All the processing crap is rinsed away just like cotton. I'd think twice if you think your cotton is picked straight from the bush and put in a baggie for you. I have seen raw cotton and it looks nothing like KGD, OC balls, Sterile balls, and etc.

I was given a baggie of this angel hair cotton which is the nicest stuff I have ever seen and is as close to pure cotton as you can get. http://www.cottonman.com/Premium%20Cotton%20Wick.htm

Never vaped it though. I still have about 499ft of Rayon to go through first.

Nope, no need. Always a big debate to boil or not. I have a bag of organic cotton from Walgreens and boiled it. Twice for 20 minutes in distilled water. First time there was a definite odor coming out of that steam. Second time not so much. Took 2 days for it to dry completely. Would I do it again. nope. Why? Well, the pan was clean but sterile? And 2 days for whatever spores floating around to contaminate my nice boiled cotton. But that bag I boiled will probably last me a year or so.

Also just received more Rayon than I will ever need. It works. Rayon still has a break-in period, maybe not as long as cotton. Rayon is suppose to wick as well as Japanese cotton and better than organic. I really think the important thing for cotton is that it's pure cotton and that is the reason why we always say organic. You definitely don't want any "poly" fillers in your cotton.
