cough cough cough

My husband is about to quit analogs (yet again) and would be quite open to vaping but everytime I've offered him his own set up or the opportunity to try mine, he coughs with every pull. We've reviewed the need for a slow draw, two-step MTL, but his immediate response is coughing and another rejection of the vaping option. He will attempt to quit cold turkey, he will suffer from withdrawal, and I am at a loss. Has anyone experienced this cough response and any advice to overcome? I've been happily vaping for almost 8 years and so wish this could work for him.

Everyone I know coughed the first couple times. I’d suggest lower nic, possibly salts if you’re currently using regular (freebase), lower pg. Some of my gear is easier on the throat than others, as well.

Some people use a higher or lower wattage, different air flow, etc. Vaping successfully is all about finding your own style. If he’s serious, he’ll try various ways and find what fits. Send him here, why don’t you, and let the gang pick his brain as to what he feels he might need.

I experienced the coughing and still do 9 years later. I can only vape low wattage and every rta has caused it. Certain wicks/wires also give me trouble, ceramic is problematic.I just stick with drop in coils and low watts, short pulls and it works for me. Certain juices are harsh and cause coughing for me as well. Nic salts do help me.

Good luck to him and if he will persevere, he can find what works for him. It may take trying a lot of different coils/set ups.

Tried a lower nic salt maybe? It doesn’t work well for me, but it seems to work for some. What does seem clear is that your particular setup doesn’t work well for him. It might help if we know what your setup is.

^^^^This, tell us what you are using that has him in coughing fits?

    Maybe a Higher VG e-Liquid?
Coupled with Lower Wattage more Mouth to Lung set-up?

I coughed for the first couple of weeks. I done MTL in a Renova Zero with 50mg nic which is what I was getting from a pack of full flavor cigarettes. I used the Renova Zero because it had voltage adjustability and a I could hit it on easy until I was ready to move up to medium and hard hits. After a week on 50mg and slowly stepping down I went to 35mg in the Zero then to 25 to 18mg then to 6mg in Sub-ohm. Now I’m doing 3.5mg in sub-ohm.

It is normal to have coughing fits when you first start vaping. I was a heavy smoker 1.5 - 2 packs a day. For the first two weeks I coughed quite a bit with the coughing cutting down significantly after day 2. Now at over a month in I don’t cough any more. It’s important to note as well that as long as he is still smoking and trying to vape coughing will be worse and isn’t likely to subside as quickly as it would if he is only vaping.

I went from 2 PAD smoking to 24mg juice when I started vaping. Granted, that was on Joye 510 and eGo and they were mild vapor devices.

High PG juices yield higher throat hit than high VG juices. Some experimentation may help him discover what he likes. For a smoker transitioning to vaping it's a natural move to vape MTL at low wattage. 10W to 15W should give him a vape that resembles his cigarette habit.

If you have a good vape shop close by, they may have atomizers filled with various juices that he could sample. My local vape shop has a free vape bar with 30 or 40 flavors in MTL atomizers. You just grab a free disposable drip tip and sample away. Find the one(s) you like and buy a bottle of your favorite flavor(s).

Thanks so much for helpful suggestions. I have over the past 4-5 years offered my hubby a try of whatever set up I was using. With coaching about slow draw. (Will try just into mouth next go 'round.) Ego pens, box mods, kanger/aspire/innokin tanks, low wattage, 50-50 and 70/30 vg/pg blends, and any number of different flavors. He had the least objectionable experience with something I ordered a couple years ago just for him - Juul with pods. He could somewhat tolerate the Juul, which I found awful (an opinion I kept to myself), but after several days, he no longer would use it. He also did okay three years ago with a set up suggested by a local vape shop (so wifey may not be the ideal person to recommend anything methinks) but again, after several days, said it wasn't working for him and coughing resumed. Hope to revisit vape shop for another try. Again, thanks for the insights, links, suggestions. Much appreciated.

Some smokers are just resistant to vape or quit smoking. I'm not saying this is the case with your husband, but perhaps he is just using the "cough" to avoid quitting his cigarettes. Quitting smoking isn't easy, and usually requires patience, determination and persistance to be successful. Maybe he just isn't ready yet to make the full commitment.

If he is expecting an e-cigarette to taste and perform exactly like a cigarette, then he's going to have a difficult time.

I coughed intermittently for the first day or so. Not much though. Now I only cough if my coil is gunked up.

As some have said he might be a person that will have a more difficult time finding the right equipment. It's not easy to quit cigs as we all know,

Although I am not a huge fan of big tobacco products - maybe try some inexpensive setups to experiment like the myblu. It is extremely easy, discreet and they now have a choice of nic salts or the regular nic pods. You can buy a setup at blu for 9.99 which includes one pod. Since he had some success with Juul maybe select the nic salt pod and then experiment with that or the regular pods to see if he likes it and can tolerate it,

Another thought is if you go with the myblu or another pod - if you can buy a few and leave them around the house - restroom, kitchen, living room. The batteries tend to last a long time if not used.

It is more of a psychological ploy - this way maybe he will try it when he is alone. He could even be slightly intimidated because you've been successfully vaping for so long. So even if he is having difficulty with it and still smoking, if there are a few around he might just be more apt to experimenting if they are around and conveniently placed.
