My husband had the same problem. In the end it was a combo of how he inhales and too high nic. He would try to inhale all of it straight to his lungs . He went from 24 mg to 6 and now inhales into mouth and partially inhales to lungs.

It could also be pg. some people are sensitive to it. If so decrease the pg content. Only way to be sure is try some 0 nic in the same juices he has trouble with. If the 0 nic is ok then it's the nic level.

I had the same problem when I started. I got some all-VG juice with a mild taboacco flavor upon recommendation from my local B&M and slowed my draw down and it worked andeventually got more used to vaping than smoking. Now, I can get some pretty serious vapor in with no problem, using any blend of pg/ve I want. Another thing, I think is he might be like me and have a lot of crud that his lungs might be trying to let go of. It took me about 10 days to get things smoothed out. Tell him to hang in there and try some of the suggestions given by others in this thread. It's worth it, being able to breathe again is great!!

Treat it like a cigar, hold the vapor in your mouth for a few seconds... Inhale if ya feel the need but do it slowly... You'll get the hang of it. The nicotine enters your system different than in a cigarette. With vaping, the nicotine enters into your mucous membranes of your mouth, not into your lungs.

That's what I tell smokers I know to try this instead of treating them like cigarettes...

In order of how likely I think the problems are:

1. Though others have mentioned it, I haven't seen this actually posted yet: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/ecf-library/337017-inhalation-technique-e-cigarette.html

2. It's somewhat normal to cough when first starting out. Most of us coughed when we first started with cigarettes, too. (This time, however, our lungs may be trying to expel the crud that's already there.)

3. Drink more fluids. Vaping is dehydrating.

4. Nicotine level is too high. I needed much less starting out than I initially thought.

5. It's possible to have a sensitivity to one or more of the common juice ingredients. I am currently running challenge tests on myself because I suspect a sensitivity to propylene glycol (PG). If that turns out to be true, I will get juices without PG. Most problem ingredients can be avoided once you know what they are. :)

Thanks to everyone for all your help. I think he is doing a little better now using your inhaling suggestions. We are using EVOD with ego battery if that matters. We have some menthol of 6 nicotine (since we were menthol smokers) and some vanilla 12. The PG/VG is 50/50 on both. He is doing better with the vanilla so it's probably not the nicotine level. Maybe the menthol irritates him?

I am okay with both but I prefer the throat hit with the vanilla. I will use up the menthol myself so it will be easier for him. He still coughs a little with the vanilla though. I really hope he gets better at it so he stops thinking about going back to cigarettes.

Have him try as others have said to inhale as if sucking a straw; long slow drags. And it may help if he takes mouth hits and take the vapor into his lungs with his mouth closed inhaling thru the nose. There is also a product that can be added to the juice to give not a menthol but a cooling effect to the vapor called Koolada.

Your husband is inhaling too much, too quickly. Next time he tries to vape, instruct him not to hit it like a cigarette, but instead, lightly suck in like a straw.

Every smoker I have ever let try my apv, tries to hit it like a cig and coughs like mad. It's pretty common.
