Some of you may remember that my wife and i have a home for women in recovery. We are moving toward breaking them in on vaping rather than asking them to quit smoking altogether.

A few of the women say that vaping makes them cough when they didn't have a "smokers cough" before. Is this normal? Also, the one who is coughing the most has not made the break from analogs yets so is "double dipping" (pun intended).

Any thoughts?

jmho, but i think its wonderful that you and your wife have a home for women in recovery..what good souls you are..

eta, i coughed for about the 1st week or so...

I belive my coughing had to do more with my lungs cleaning out the gunk from smoking cigs for so many years..

i thought of the coughing phase as a time for cleansing, etc..

Most people who have never vaped before drag on it the first time like they would drag on an analog. I had a few people try mine and while most listened, those that did not got one hell of a throat hit and immediately started choking.

Think of it this way: Smoking was like riding a bike with training wheels. As far as it goes with vaping: Smokers know how to vape, they just need to adjust their balance before working on the speed when they drag.

Tell them to drag very slowly at first hold it in for a few seconds then exhale. I can't agree more with Cookie. Water is going to be key when starting out. If they have to stop and take a small sip, they will pace themselves more. At least until they get used to it.

I didn't have coughing like some others. However I did have some minor mood swing withdrawal. Vaping actually has cleared up my cough.

same here i never really had a bad "smokers cough" but for about 2 weeks i coughed like crazy and all sorts of colorful things came with it

i took it as it was the way my body was purging all the cancer that accumulated over 10 years of heavy smoking :D

however what i actually think it is. now this is a opinion and i may be wrong
the pg dries things out so until your used to it your body tries to compensate for dry throat and lungs by increasing flem production until it is used to the glycol

and also the one who is still slipping analogs that defiantly aggravates the cough

solution
water water water, the halls fruit breezers seemed to help me out, and a high / higher PG/VG mix
my girlfriend was having a horrible time adjusting she was coughing severely and sucking down asthma inhalers like air, but adding VG made it a million times better and her coughing was gone in 3-5 days

Yes, what the others are saying. Your body is detoxing all the krap out of your lungs *just as if you quit smoking cold turkey*. Your body is beginning the healing process for your lungs. I also went through a spell of breaking out, like small pimples...yuk, like I am a teenager again! Go with it and it will eventually clear up. Ditto on the fluids. I am oddly drinking more water than I have in my life. It just tastes good, and hits the spot perfectly. I am more hydrated, my skin looks better, my hair is indeed getting softer, too.

When you get all the coughing out of the way...wait till your taste buds begin to come back, as well as your sense of smell! You will wonder how you ever started smoking in the first place.

Vaping so far, appears to be all of the benefits and none of the detriments. I am not eating more, in fact, I am losing weight. I can walk to work and be pleasantly worn out, not gasping for air when I arrive. I now have two pair of pants, formerly well fitted that I can pull on and off fully buttoned and zipped. I am not eating as many sweets, either.

It sounds like you are right on track, keep up the good work, and never, ever, hesitate to ask questions here...the folks here are amazing, supportive and knowledgeable. I haven't seen them fail to be able to answer a question, usually from experience :)

You also have to remember that the smoke in cigarettes is treated chemically so as not to irritate the throat/mucus membranes. Actually smoking a cig itself rarely made me cough, however inhaling any OTHER kind of smoke did because it didn't have those 'other' chemicals, it was just smoke. This isn't smoke (from a PV) but it IS an irritant to some extent and with the cilia growing back, and the drying effect of the PG or VG then you're going to cough a little (or a lot) because thats a normal reaction.
Always keep the throat moist with liquid (preferrably NOT too much caffiene or products containing caffiene as that will dry out your mucosa as well), especially DURING vaping. More water is good for your body anyway (better skin, hair, happier kidneys) but vapers need more to offset the PG/VG drying. You will build up a tolerance, but you must continue to use more water all the same. If I don't drink as much as I should I'll get a dry throat (rarely sore these days though, but the frst week I thought I had strep, but it was just the drying out effect). If i inhale too hard, like with a cig, Ill cough too.
There's a learning curve to get through but the payoff is worth it :)

I had the same experience when I first tried a PV, I was visiting a friend who did not smoke in his apartment and had made the switch to vaping. It took me about an hour (half way through Iron Man to be exact :) ) to figure out how to draw on a KR808 to get the right hit. I bought my first kit when I got home and I coughed pretty good for the first few days (I dropped the analogs completely) but then I was good (actually way better than before), with the exception of the occasional dryness, but come on we could probably all stand to drink a little more water right?

I believe the initial coughing during the first few days is that your lungs are starting to heal themselves and getting rid of the layers of tar and toxins. I coughed up lots of phlegm in the first week and once in awhile since then. Constant vaping doesn't cause me to cough, but I'll have a little shortness of breath sometimes, so I'll have to lay down the eGo for a few minutes.

Take a look at the following page, and you can see what I mean:

Water, VG juice is also much easier on the throat/lungs. And, yes when I was vaping and smoking I coughed more than I did when I was smoking alone. Went away after about a week of no smokes. However, when I let myself get dehydrated I cough alot. Remember, PG/VG are hygroscopic, they absorb water readily. So, if you are allready dehydrated and inhale PG/VG, it is going to irritate.

I had a HORRIBLE time with PG when I first started back in August (maybe it was late July?). I mean I felt like I was coming down with pneumonia. I came on here like "WTF is wrong with me???" Sure enough, part of it was my lungs purging the crap that I had been filling them with for umpteen years, and also, my sensitivity to PG. I think mine is a bit on the extreme side though. Anything that has ever had PG run through it irritates me for days an days, even after cleaning. As soon as I get carts ready for use, I soak the crud out of them and wipe them out several times before using them, and even then I have to deal with a few days of feeling like my insides are made of sandpaper before it really clears out and lets the VG do its solo act. So you might want to try getting some 100% VG liquids and see if that helps.

And yes, LOTS of water. I find that chewing gum and sucking on ice works well, too :)

First off, much respect to you and your wife for helping these women. I'm a recovering addict myself and I know how difficult recovery is.

I "double dipped" for a short time and I coughed more than I ever coughed before. It didn't go away until a few days after giving up analogs completely. The coughing is a normal process whenever you quit smoking, even if you didn't cough while you were smoking. Your lungs are coming back to life and expelling all the crap that built up in them. Like others have already said, drinking lots of water will help. If the irritation is too much to tolerate, they can try sucking on crushed ice or throat lozenges.
