I doubt any metal gets hot enough to emit fumes. If it did, we need to give up anything that uses coils.

I doubt it, not sure of the burning point of the metal dust from the type of cartos they were using, but it's never a good idea to inhale metal fumes. I doubt you would suck any metal dust into your mouth once the filler material has been saturated though and would probably never make it's way close enough to the coil.

Powder and dust have a lower ignition point based on mass, they would be more in the micron range.
Aluminum powder has an auto ignition point of 1,400F and the dust may form flammable or explosive mixture with air, especially when damp. Reacts violently and/or explosively with water, steam or moisture. May ignite or explode on contact with moist air. May cause eye
and skin irritation. May cause respiratory tract irritation. Air sensitive

You could try Amazon, Lowes or HD for a saddle valve- good for about 50 holes:

If you still want to try the nail idea, do you have the tools to make a simple jig? Drill a hole in a piece of wood just large enough for the carto to fit in snugly. Then drill a perpendicular nail sized hole where you want the hole in the carto to be. That way you can punch the nail in without deforming the carto and it also keeps everything straight.

I would also highly recommend a carto punch, though.

For people worried about metal dust, the inside of a carto IS made of what is basically a filter. Any metal dust that got stuck to the outside of the filler during drilling or whatever else will have a hell of a time making its way into your vapor.

If you are worried about metal dust, stop using anything with a standard connection (510, 808, etc etc) which means no cartos period, regardless of how they are punched. Every time you screw and unscrew your atty or carto from your PV you are producing a very fine dust inside your connection. If you are using something with airflow through the connector (like 99% of non-rba devices) your chances of inhaling that metal dust are dramatically higher than a few lucky dust particles traveling through the labyrinth of carto filler material to make its way to your vapor cloud.

Keeping your connections clean can cut down on this risk, but even 100% clean, the first time you screw something down on your PV you just made more delicious metal dust to be vaped.

Personally neither risk really bothers me because they are so incredibly minor, but the risk of metal shavings left over from drilling a hole getting into your vapor are nothing compared to the dust particles from the 510 connection. It's kind of like worrying about the cigarette you dropped on the floor when the entire house is already on fire.

A carto punch is much much easier though, and will give better results. You can get cheapy carto punches for like five bucks at most retailers, I'd suggest going that route.

You could try this but it's going to end up badly most likely.
