Thank you for all the encouragement everyone! It is now Day 11, the last 7 without a regular cigarette. No morning hacking. No headache. Deeper breathing. Already! I vape in the car, at home, in the bedroom, on the street and even sometimes subtly in large shops. So far the only new social occasion was a visit to non-smoking friend's for coffee, and I went outside to vape. I am still convinced that vaping in an open room (especially at a party) should be accepted, but will cross that bridge when I come to it. In the meantime I am like many of you -- I enjoy vaping more than I did smoking!

I'm thinking of finding snus for situations where my vaping setup doesn't work or where I cannot vape. Having spent time in Sweden, the home of snus, I know how addictive it can be since one can snus 100% of the time except when eating (I even knew some guys who slept with it in their mouths). However I just don't want to be in any situation where I need to go back to cigarettes.

Anyway, I'm glad to be vaping and really impressed with those of you who were the pioneers of this fantastic alternative to smoking -- thank you!

Yay for you HeavySmoker! Way back on Jan. 13th you'd already been 7 days without a cigarette. That's quite an accomplishment! (Sorry I didn't say that earlier. Forgot to bookmark this discussion.)

@MudVaper - About this that you wrote on Jan. 11th: "That is great! If you have time, we should catch up. The vape scene here is not much. I only know two regular vapers and you can't even buy Blu or something like it in town."

Sure...I'll try to catch up with you. You shouldn't be hard to find if there's only 2-3 regular vapers in Valdez! :) Knowing you can't just run uptown and get supplies in Valdez...I'd gladly bring along some things for you, if you let me know before I leave FL on June 10th. Since I'm always helping friends, neighbors, etc. switch to vaping, I have a good variety of things onhand, and a lot of them. If there are things I don't have...I can get them easily in my town. Just message me or start a convo a few days before, and I'll respond.

We are on about the same timeline HS. My ego/evod kit (2 batteries, 2 clearomizers) arrived in the mail day after Christmas (sometimes the best Christmas presents are the ones you buy for yourself). As a 25 a day smoker for decades and coughing up more and more of the phlegmy brown jellybeans, decided it was time to cut back.

Anyway, after filling tank and a couple solid hits knew instantly I’d found a game changer. It all seemed too good to be true. Had a smoke with morning coffee the next day and three smokes the second day, mainly in AB flavor comparisons which cigs lost badly each time. Kept my ciggies right next to the egos so both were always equally handy.

A month later I’m still at four smokes. Put cigs and lighter in a ziplock and moved to car so they are never far away in case I really want one. Think you nailed it when you said “In the meantime I am like many of you -- I enjoy vaping more than I did smoking!” That has certainly been my experience and why the transition to vaping has been way faster and easier than I ever dreamed. Miraculous IMO. Breathing easier, phlegmy things decreased by factor of 10, and better general attitude due to not feeling guilty 25 times a day.

My pennies' worth as the social aspect was what held me back for ages. I am going into my 4th month as a full-time vaper. I am the ONLY vaper i know and rarely see vapers in the environment I move in, so I am definitely conspicuos. I can't say I will ever be comfortable in public, but it is getting better. I have realised that I find it most awkward in a work/business context, whereas bars etc feels less strange somehow. So during the day and around people I don't know I keep a Nicorette Quickmist or microtab handy. In fact this has the added side-effect of weaning me off the habit of smoking/vaping all the time, so I now enjoy my vape more like a good cigar or pipe (I imagine - never tried either), ie something to sit down and enjoy, whereas the nicorette just helps me cope with the nicotine craving. I am not gonna lie - I do have the occasional cig when out, but proably less than 15 in four months, and I still enjoy it, but I don't feel like being a smoker anymore, so not too worried.

I never did snus, but also hear its very addictive - plus you lose the benefitbof feeling fresh and clean, I would think (which to me at least is a huge benefit from quitting) so would really recommend you try something else. But... In the end, whatever keeps you off the cigs is a win!

OK, so I'm getting towards the four week mark, and I'm still really enjoying vaping. I am never without my device, plus a second battery in my pocket, and after the first two days when I smoked a few, I have had only one cigarette. I'm flying tomorrow and hope I can get on the plane with four batteries and 8 small bottles of juice (no checked bags). The only time I want a cig is when I see smokers lighting up, mostly because there are almost people who vape in my area at the moment and I miss the social element of sharing a smoke. I'm sure this will change over time and I'll be able to share a vape with others in the future. I am however becoming more comfortable vaping on the street, in bars, at outdoor cafés and other places where smoking is also allowed. I haven't had a situation yet where I have resorted to snus, and hope to avoid that. I still have a couple packs of smokes in the house, but no longer carry them with me when I leave the house. To Tckenno, glad to hear that you and I are on the same timeline -- let's keep in touch! Thanks again to everyone for your encouragement -- this has been exceptionally easy, and I never thought it would be. I am so happy that e-cig technology is where it is today, exactly when I need it.

@HeavySmoker - Wow! You're doing great! Sounds like you're another success story to me. You should feel extremely proud of yourself!

As far as this that you wrote: "I'm flying tomorrow and hope I can get on the plane with four batteries and 8 small bottles of juice (no checked bags)."

I just checked airline regs. about such things last week, for some flights I have coming up. Actually - taking your batteries on in your carry-on baggage is the only way they'll let you take Lithium Ion batteries on a plane any more. And for your liquids, they don't care how many little bottles of liquids you take...as long as (1) none are larger than 3 oz. and (2) all of them have to fit in your one quart-sized ziploc baggie that any liquids, lotions, pastes, etc. have to be in when you go through screening. So it sounds like you're good to go to me if those 2 requirements are met!

Glad you checked in HS.

I'm watching this thread so we can compare notes along the way. You are ahead of me in being able to leave your smokes at home. I haven't knowingly left the house without mine for so long it makes me more uncomfortable not to have them nearby. Somehow puts my mind at ease and stops thoughts from being drawn in that direction.

Socially I've only had one chance to vape around another smoker. Was a guy in his late 20's who had never tried an e-cig. Offered mine, he took a couple drags, nodded and said 'Not bad.' Maybe planted a seed.

It's around non-smokers that I feel self-conscious vaping. Have avoided or vaped discreetly. My 9W ego doesn't make plumes so is not hard to hide. If someone spotted it and expressed curiosity would be happy to answer their questions best I could. Otherwise its stealth mode for this kid.

Hi ECF members!

I'm new to vaping -- just started yesterday with an eGo starter sets I bought about a year ago with the intention of starting when I was ready. Yesterday I felt ready after a serious hacking jag in the morning. I'm a real heavy smoker (3 pack-a-day Marlboro Reds smoker for 39 years, started at 16, never tried to quit). Although I've got no authenticated health problems, my morning cough and shortness of breath are sure signs of worse things to come if I don't quit.

So after two Marlboro's in the morning I started vaping, found this site, and didn't stop vaping until I left the house at around 5pm, where I realized that the battery was dead. So I smoked four Marlboro's before getting back home to get the recharged second battery. Then vaped the rest of the day without a smoke.

Today I started with chain vaping until 2pm, where I was at a party and was too uncomfortable to vape. A smoking buddy and I ended up on the balcony and I felt the peer pressure (can you believe it? I'm 55!) to smoke with him. Actually three cigarettes. But when I left the party I was actually looking forward to vaping as I walked out on the street which is usually where I light up immediatel). I googled the nearest vape store and picked up a new atomizer (or whatever they're called), a third battery, and some more juice. I expect to vape the rest of the day and that feels great. I'm actually shocked how much I enjoy it.

Certainly there will be many tough days ahead and I don't expect these first two days will be typical, but for right now I'm extremely satisfied with vaping and see it as a really enjoyable way to quit the coffin nails.

Any tips on "coming out" as a vaper and dealing with "peer pressure" is most appreciated, especially from former analog smokers.

Very good thread, thank you for sharing...!

And - I just met another vaper a few days ago, maybe we can have a mini-convention :)

An update: I'm no longer counting the days since my conversion to vaping from smoking, but now that I check the calendar, it has been six weeks. Vaping has become a regular part of life now, and I like it a lot. Virtually no urges to return to smoking. One of the amazing benefits I've discovered is the relative freedom to vape in so many places where smoking is not allowed: smoke-free hotel rooms, rest-rooms, airport lounges, and even non-smoker's homes. Yes, I've asked at two recent dinner parties and been told, even by the most smoke-sensitive people, that it is absolutely OK to vape at the dinner table. No more going outside! Social! Plus the fact that vaping does not mean committing 5-10 minutes the way smoking a cigarette does -- i can just take one or two vapes, and leave it at that. Convenient! So far, so great.

Fantastic post , i am going to send it to somebody who is debating whether to switch to vaping or not.

It's now been 87 days without cigarettes. Hooked on blueberry 2.4% currently, but will probably get tired of it at some point. Still using the same set-up, but as the batteries get low, I'll likely look at something new. Vaping is SOOO much easier than smoking, and I get absolutely the same satisfaction. It was great going on a ski holiday last month and being able to vape in a non-smoking room (although the hotel rules stated "no use of electronic cigarettes according to state laws" I ignored it). I really hope that no major laws are introduced that make vaping more difficult or expensive -- right now I feel we have a really good situation. Funny thing, I would never vape in a supermarket since it has been against the law since I was a child, but the other day I saw a guy absentmindedly pull his vaper out and blow a big cloud in the freezer section of my local supermarket. I got a kick out of that, because I'm sure that vaping has become so natural for me that I'll do something similar soon enough.
