I have to disagree, PM is short for private message, the right to privacy is assumed based on the name.

Also, I have a friend that works in the post office, and according to him its a felony for them to open mail.

I suppose that some may perceive a "Private Message" as an act of Granting or Guarantying some "Right" of Privacy. But I believe this is Only a Perception. A Private Message to Me Only Implies that the Message shall not be display in a Public Setting.

Please let's not confuse the word "Private" with the word "Privacy".

You are correct, Opening USPS Mail is a Felony. When the person who opens it is Not an Authorized USPS Employee or an a Person working under the capacity of an entire Host of State and Federal Agencies.

Sometimes people don't remember what they put on the internet is there for everyone to see. Nothing is private once you hit send wether it be an email and instant message conversation or an irc chat. Everything can be viewed by somebody somethings are easier to see than others grant it but nothing is private. If you want privacy unplug your computer now and never get on the internet again otherwise accept that what you say may become public at any time and enjoy this great community.

Hay sarge, I'll check them all for ya .... always wanted to know who was hittin' up on whom

The whole idea of monitoring PM,s is silly. Like why would anyone even care.
I would imagine that several of our common terms keep the key words counters spinning at Homeland security anyway.

I for one can think of some reasons where a mod Would and Should Read PM’s. Considering Extreme Bullying. Like what happened to SteelyJan.

I’m not talking about a Member Getting Bent because someone Doesn’t like the mod they Like. Or Someone getting Animated over Diverging Views on vaping in Non-Smoking Areas.

I’m referring to the Situation when an ECF Member Crosses a Line and Starts issuing Threats and or Promoting Extreme Hatred towards another Member.

I think Many Members here on the ECF could see that this Would be a Valid Reason for a Mod to Read a Members PM’s.

That's why the PM system has the "Report" icon, as Classy pointed out. The little yellow triangle with exclamation mark sends it upstream if a person has concerns with an incoming PM. Click on the triangle itself.

I think this has become the preverbal dead horse.

TLDR version for anyone just joining: mods can read PMs but don't because they don't care and are too busy. Don't send stuff in PM you don't want other people to read.

No, sorry, Mods do not have access to reading PMs.

Nope. Can't read them. Don't want to read them. If we had to read them-

I’ve never had an expectation of privacy in PM’s and am boring enough that I feel kinda bad for anyone who does have the time to or inclination to try to read mine. :snore:

But I do find it ironic that the only knowledge that I have of “rumors” related to who has permissions to read what weren't from discussions in the open forum (and were in the context of how to encourage a member to make a report to admin).

Not that I ever actually know what’s up with the rumor mill (I don’t get out much)

I have been a member here for 2 1/2 years. I'm old enough to know that nothing posted on the Internet is ever private. Any PM I send can be reported (and read by the mods) or the contest of my PM can be copied and pasted and forwarded to anybody by the recipient. The whole issue is indeed a nonissue, IMHO.

But I do have a question to ECF Admin, because I couldn't find an answer in the ECF Rules, which I just reread carefully.

13. Freedom of speech
Your contribution to this forum is not a right but a privilege. As this is a private website there is no public right to freedom of speech. The rules we have in place are to protect the site, and to provide a convivial environment for our Members. In short: we decide what is permissible or not permissible.

I understand and accept this rule.

However, I would like to know if the ECF Forum Rules apply to everybody (including staff) or just to ECF rank and file members?

If the rules do indeed apply to staff also, how do I go about voicing my concerns without violating ECF rules?

Rule #9 states:

9. (...)
a. These are not permitted -
(...)
•Criticising or complaining about a Moderator, or how the site is run, except via PM (private message).

Whom do I send a PM to? Please advise.

I appreciate that there are rules on this forum, considering the alternative..

I usually do a google search before I post a thread just to be sure no one has asked that specific question. A number of times I was directed to another vaping forum where they openly cussed, had offensive avatars etc, it was horrible. I'm glad we have the rules that are in place because it makes the vaping community look better in people's eyes. If I didn't find ecf when I started vaping and only had that other forum I saw I would develop a negative feeling towards the community in general and probably would of gave up vaping entirely.
