I realize this thread is mostly talking about gums but I was wondering if anyone has had any problems with dental work such as bridges. I have been vaping for about two weeks and my bridge suddenly fell out. I would especially like to hear from the dentists.

Thanks.

Well since I've been vaping, 2 teeth have cracked and broke. (not related to gums or absessed tooth). PG or age/big fillings/etc?

I still doubt that what you are describing was caused by vaping. Sounds like you have have other issues and that vaping is coincidental.

And btw, I'd not worry about being taken. Your referring doc gets no benefit for sending you away from his office and to a specialist's due to concern. Please do update with the perio's diagnosis. Take care!

Went to the perio. He started right away. Got all sides done, some stitching, one bone graft, and a tooth pulled . Clean bill of health.
What I can't believe is after 25 years of absolute pain free dental , he was not so pain free. I kept saying stop, then he give me more novacaine-4-5 times!!! Maybe he got a bad batch. Anyway, 3k later, I have been scraped, filed, picked, cut, stitched, grafted..... I'm going to have to take out a loan for the dental work now.

Bridges falling out and teeth cracking are related to age of the work done, amount of stress that they must bear, fillings that are too big/should have been crowned, untreated recurrent decay, etc.
No way from vaping.

Seminolewind, I feel your pain with the loan damage. And sorry to hear about your lack of profound anesthesia. That couldn't have been fun. Glad you're doing better now.
Take care.

Now am confused :( i made another thread with concerns of having a blood troat in the morning but now as i read here am starting to think it's from my gums. I mean i wa aware that i been vaping hard sometimes at night before i go to sleep and seems like my troat use to hurt use to be a bit lazy to drink liquids :p.. But that's not the case i only seem to have blood in my troat. You know like when brush your teeth you have a bunch of slimed blood and need to bring up the mucas to spit it out. But druing the day i tedn to try and do the same thing and everything seems okay.. So am wondering if it's my gums that tends to bleed at night and stay in my troat till i get up :(

Ps: My gums do bleed when i brush my teeth also. But didn't think i would do so while alseep

Warrlord, you should see a dentist and a physician to determine the source of your bleeding. There is only such much that I can diagnose from a vague online description of symptoms. Please do yourself a favor and get this checked. You will feel better about it.

steel23, I'm sure I'm not the only one who's interested to see your replies. It's a benefit to us all when someone with relevant expertise chimes in. (Certainly, we can't expect you to field diagnoses...for your own sanity, and partially because I hope no one starts posting pictures 8-o :p.)
Vaping is still little-known to health professionals, so there are limited sources for information out there right now.

Welcome to the forum, too. :)

seminolewind, I hope you're recovering OK!

I'm also thankful that we have steel23 on here to answer our questions. Dental health is something that I'm very fussy about, so vaping and its effects on my teeth and gums are important to me. If the vapor is making my mouth, especially my tongue, feel dry, won't that effect my gums and teeth, too? I drink a lot of water, but that doesn't seem to increase saliva production. The person commenting on here about possibly seeing cases similar to ".... mouth" is a bit concerning. I'm an ex-cigar smoker, and I don't recall my mouth feeling this dry, ever.

Perhaps something can be done to the e-juice to reduce the effects of PG/VG drying - I'm no scientist. Is drinking lots of water enough?

I just don't understand how it can't be doing something to our dental health. Surely, vaping can't be as bad as inhaling nasty illegal substances, as we've had people on here who've been vaping for well over a year, but xerostomnia is xerostomnia no matter what causes it.

Thanks for all your input. Please don't get mad at me, as I'm not trying to attack e-cigs.

PS: As I said before, my dentist wasn't pleased with me when I told him about inhaling PG vapor. My teeth and gums are in good condition.

Why was your dentist unhappy about you inhaling PG vapor? Its in food that we eat - well if it has E1520 on hte package label we do.
I'm interested in his reasons or rather what he told you his reasons were.
I too btw have found my mouth is drier (and I do understand that a drier mouth is bad for the teeth) but I put that down to the difference between the way I smoke the PV (does that sentence sound wrong? lol) and how I smoke an analog - one the vapor goes into the mouth with not so much inhaling to lungs and the other is all straight to lungs.

Hey CaptJay,

When I showed him my PV and explained it to him, he was not at all amused and plainly told me that I shouldn't use it because the dehydrating properties of vaporized PG can cause damage to dental health. My dentist told me that some of the issues I've had with my gums over the years are likely due to a dry mouth caused by certain medications, as well as breathing through my mouth more than my nose - especially when sleeping. (For the last six months I've been training myself to breath through my nose as much as I can, so that has definitely helped.)

PG is in all sorts of foods we eat, it's even in my toothpaste and non-alcoholic mouthwash, but we're taking in large doses of it in vaporized form on a regular basis. Being a casual ex-cigar smoker, I only bring the vapor into my mouth, occasionally exhaling through my nose. I had a vaping session this afternoon and my mouth still feels kind of icky from it.

I've been reading a bit more about xerostomia, and one site says that drinking plenty of water should help, but why does my mouth still feel like the moisture has been sucked out of it no matter how much I drink? The tip of my tongue is a bit red and irritated, too.

Hmm... would it be possible to add artificial saliva to e-liquid? :p

I do hope that this issue can be addressed in the future as e-liquid improves.

Hmm well taht kinda makes sense from what I've gleaned from researching it myself. That its harmless in and of itself but it can cause drying of the mucus membranes (like nasal passages, mouth lining etc) and can have an irritant effects on eyes (which is temporary). Perhaps if you switch to VG and then ask his opinion - provided of course he has info on VG (and not being sure where he gets his info on PG its hard to know if he's just going by anecdotal evidence or cold hard fact).
I do find myself that my mouth gets much drier than when I smoked analogs, although I'm not a mouth breather (if I have a cold and can't nose breathe its truely awful I dont know how u guys cope lol), chewing sugarfree gum helps a lot but if I vape while doing it I can only taste the gum lol
I am considering switching to VG for that reason alone; I know I'm not allergic to PG, but I am proud of my teeth (a Brit with great white teeth, imagine that all you believers in stereotypes ), never had any gum disease, and would hate to lose them.

I have always gone to my dentist every 3 months until I lost my job and health insurance a year ago. She always measures around my gums every 6mths and have always had 1's and 2's for the past three or so years. I just visited the dentist in November a week or so before i started vaping and it had been nearly a year since my last visit. The new measurments were mostly 3's and a few 4's. She explained to me this was not good and was the beginning sign of gum disease.

I bought a small round electric toothbrush (extra soft) for $20 as she recommended to me. When i first started using it, my gums bled daily for several weeks then they stopped bleeding even when flossing. This all happened prior to vaping.

I have been vaping since nov 24th and have no bleeding in my gums. I do notice a "film" on my teeth sometimes that I didnt experience when smoking. However, I also do not chew as much gum as when I smoked so maybe the chewing gum had removed that film.
It has been 3 mths since my cleaning and my teeth feel great with very little tartar buildup. I believe there is less tartar due to the new toothbrush and from not smoking. Smoking aggravated my asthma causing me to breathe extremely heavy while sleeping which caused an increase in plaque buildup. Now, i rarely breath heavy (thats what my daughter called my light snoring) while sleeping unless I forget to take my advair.

I have an appt for a cleaning in Feb and I will let you all know the results of my gum test. I have no idea how long it takes to see an improvement but really hope there will be one even if its slight.

A few questions to Dr. Steel23

1. What is that "film" on my teeth and what causes it? Is there any reason to be concerned and should I mention that to my dentist?

2. How long does it take to see improvement in gum health? Should I expect to be back to 1's and 2's again for my next appt or is the damage irreversible? Is gum health affected by age (I'm 36)?

CaptJay:

I don't know if switching to VG will reduce the dryness problem because it's a humecant, too. I haven't tried it myself, so maybe someone can chip in. All my relatives live in the UK, and as far as a I know, none of them have bad teeth.

Cielo:

Sorry to hear about your gum problems. I haven't noticed any film on my teeth, but I probably don't vape as much as you. My dentist keeps warning me that I'm in danger of gum disease, which always freaks me out. I avoided the dentist for six years and had a minor case of gingivitis, which still seems to be on the verge of flaring up again, so I've been advised to see the dentist every six months. (I'm overdue right now.) My last trip to the dentist, before I started vaping a lot, showed improvement to my gums, so I'll post here with the results of my next check-up, too. I'm around your age, too.

I had my dentist appt this morning along with a cleaning. My gums have improved and they all measured 3,2 and 1, vs the 4,3,2 so there was definitely improvement. I have 3 bottom teeth that are a little crooked and my gums bled a little around those three but no bleeding around the rest. I have one tooth in the back that is stained from tobacco but the rest of my teeth are pearly white. My dentist/dental hygienist were very happy!

I also asked about bleeding gums. My dentist stated that detox (even by natural remedies), plaque/tartar buildup, not flossing or brushing properly will cause gums to bleed.

The verdict is that vaping has positively affected my gums and has not caused any other negative issues. I will be going back in 4 mths so will update this thread again at that time.

I think alot has to do with the fact that I sleep with my mouth open, I am on some meds for 8 years that cause dry mouth, etc. I've heard that dry mouth is not a good thing cause you have little saliva that neutralizes some bacteria. Vaping, too, can cause dry mouth, but I haven't vaped long enough (6 months) for that to contribute to the long term damage that was there. (I am not a dentist)

I've had the same issues...I tend to sleep with my mouth open, and last year i had to have a scalar/planar done due to gum disease (I think it had everything to do with smoking analogs from overseas and stress because I got laid off). My gums have bled as long back as i can remember, but when the gum disease took hold all i had to do was touch them with my finger and they would bleed.

Anyway...my gums were so bad that the scalar/planar made them feel good...not much pain afterwords (you should know that I've been tortured by every dental procedure known to man...All but 6 teeth in my mouth have been crowned). Now i'm on an antibiotic 2x a day for who knows how long, but i went from 6's, 7's, and 8's to 2's, 3's, and one 4. (which i have never seen with my gums).

Thanks for the info. My gums and teeth problems were most likely due to the age of the beginning of the gum and teeth problems, and the old cavities start to fall out. I too sleep with my mouth open, which is not good for the teeth or gums, and it probably causes that film. Try Listerine. The other thing is that I'm on one med that dries out my mouth. Saliva neutralizes some bacteria, but dry mouth takes that defense away. Well I'm up to about 6k in scaling, caps, one root canal and he hasn't even started on the fillings. Ack!!!
