I'm a fan of the Halo Element kit as it uses 510 threading, which is becoming the standard - more options including the eGo, and lots of cartomizer varieties. The G6 uses KR808d-1 threading which was most common a year or so ago and is still in use by vendors of cigarette-sized ecigs. I just sent you a PM!

Can someone explain the difference between "manual" and "automatic" batteries, I mean, what do they "automatically" do?

"Automatic" means that all the user has to do to turn them on (get vapor) is take a draw, just like with a cigarette. These have a hole of some type to sense the vacuum created by drawing on the mouthpiece which could, under some circumstances, allow "juice" (or e-liquid, the stuff that has flavor/nicotine and makes the vapor) to leak in. With proper use it's not much of an issue, but new users will usually damage at least one battery getting started. :)

"Manual" means the user presses a button to turn the battery on before they will get vapor while taking a draw. These are sealed and it's really pretty difficult to damage them with liquid under normal use.

Some prefer autos so they don't have to mess with a switch or button; others prefer manual because it gives a little more control of the warmth/timing of the vapor.

Relatively new are "sealed auto" batteries that have very small holes and are much more difficult for liquid to leak into. So far as I know, the Smokeless Image Volt is the only e-cig with sealed automatic batteries at this time.

Did it make a difference, when you first swiched, that the e-cig LOOKED like a cigarette?

For me it did not, though I do like the size and form factor and have several of these kinds of battery (mostly Smokeless Image but also some from another very similar brand).

Almost all new vapers think they what they want a cigarette-sized device and there's nothing wrong with that. But it is only recently that the performance of such devices has gotten good enough to make it a truly viable option. Personally I point anyone who's interested in switching in the direction of Smokeless Image first, where I'm 99% sure they won't be disappointed. After that they can branch out on their own. :)

My impression, from these posts, is that "cartomizers" are good and the "atomizer/cartridge" combo is not as good. Is that accurate?

Well, yes and no. It's not that either is really good or bad, but they are different. Many, many veteran vapers prefer atomizers and I would consider them devices for more advanced users.

Cartomizers are like disposable atomizers with built-in containment for a small amount of liquid so the user doesn't have to constantly make sure it is wet. Just think of a cartomizer as an atomizer with training wheels. ;)

What is "boge?"

It's just a brand name.

... I'm leaning toward the 65mm batteries is because he smokes 100's - should I forget the aesthetics and go with the 78mm batteries because they last longer?

Go with the 78's. 65's are nice but getting started the longer run time of the 78's will be appreciated, trust me.

It's good to hear from someone that uses the Halo element, it would give more options for cartos. I bough some Halo element 510 cartos for my GLV, they work on it but not as good as Boge do. Just wanted to try Halo's 510 carto :) bnrk

I agree with Vapian. The best first e-cig is from Smokeless Image. I smoked Misty menthol 120's for years which I was what I considered a "light menthol". The VOLT is the easiest e-cig to begin with! I've used 510 minis (didn't last long enough), the eGo types (didn't feel like a cigarette), and a "tube mod" (looks like I'm vaping a pipe bomb). Thanks to winning a Smokeless Image contest, I discovered the VOLT and I'm "in love"! They have better prices than any other company that sells KR808d's. You can get pre-filled cartos that aren't any more expensive than their blank ones. I use their 78mm's. With the carto, it's the same size and length of a Misty 120! And I can "V" the e-cig!! That was a big part of my addiction I discovered. They have both Menthol Ice cartos and Menthol Burst. These are menthol--not mint! I just got my vape mail from them again today. I ordered a 30ml bottle of the Menthol Burst to refill the cartos that I have! Your hubby can do this when he's more used to filling the cartos. And the most wonderful thing about Smokeless Image VOLTS is that they have come out with an automatic that you don't have to worry as much about overfilling!!!!!! (As part of my addiction, I realized that I resented having to push a button to feed my addiction!) You'll have to decide, depending on how much hubby smokes, how many mgs that you need in his juice. I smoked between 1 1/2 packs and 2 1/2 packs a day for many, many years! Now that you have the required posts, I'd suggest that you visit the "official smokeless image" thread. It's not just for beginners anymore!

OK, I've been looking at websites and am still a little flummoxed. Some questions:

Can someone explain the difference between "manual" and "automatic" batteries, I mean, what do they "automatically" do?

Did it make a difference, when you first swiched, that the e-cig LOOKED like a cigarette? I've seen the "eGo" version and the "kGo" version, etc... and they look like perfume purse atomizers to me. I've been watching videos... I'll ask Rob when he gets home if he cares what it looks like, but it seems it would be easier to transition if it looked closer to what he was used to and was able to be held the way he's always held his cigarettes.

My impression, from these posts, is that "cartomizers" are good and the "atomizer/cartridge" combo is not as good. Is that accurate?

What is "boge?"

What I'm leaning toward is a Halo G6 65mm starter kit, in "classic white," with the 5 filled cartomizers juiced with "Menthol Ice" and buying a small bottle of the Backwoods Brew menthol for him to try with the empty cartomizers that come with the kit. I'll let him decide on the level of nicotine, since I'm a little clueless. The reason I'm leaning toward the 65mm batteries is because he smokes 100's - should I forget the aesthetics and go with the 78mm batteries because they last longer? How does all this sound? Am I on the right track?

I appreciate you guys so very much.

If he doesn't care what it looks like, I'd get a bigger battery, ego type device with low resistance cartomizers. It's cheaper than the mini's, batteries last longer and due to the LR carto, you do get a better vape. I have the 510 and KR808 I use sometimes but definitely in the beginning, to get off cigs- the ego type device helps.

I really didn't want anything that looked like a cig. They aren't exactly welcomed, and when I use my pv no one knows what I'm doing.

But if you think, or he thinks the mini will help him adapt, start with that. If he can't get off the cigs completely with that, he may need to go bigger. My mom started with a KR808 and liked it, still uses it sometimes. But when she got the Riva, she stopped the cigs completely.

I echo the Volt suggestions. The Volt rocks! It's a steady 3.7v vape til the last drop. (most batteries peter out as they're used between charges, but not the Volt). I use both the new sealed (drip resistant) Automatic batteries and the Manuals, the short 68mm and the normal 78mm. I like them all, but so far my personality likes the Auto's the best.
You'll want to get the PCC for it too, it really makes a big difference. (with any small eCig like the Volt)

I'm not a menthol person, but I tried and liked (even enjoyed) the Menthol Burst. I wish I could steer you in the menthol dept but I have no experience there. Sorry.

Best of luck in finding the Perfect set up for him! Hugs and Prayers

Hi, Barb,

I started vaping in July of 2010 and went through several brands before I found this e-cigarette. The hardest part of switching is finding the right product that will simulate smoking the best. If your husband wants a basic "plug and play" ecig, then the Volt is another brand to consider. I've been using them since August and have been very satisfied with the vapor production, throat hit and taste. So far, this brand is the closest thing to smoking a real cigarette that I have experienced, both physically and aesthetically. I'm not a big menthol fan, but I've heard good things about their two menthol flavors.

As for the batteries, I agree with Chimney55. I've accidentally overfilled my cartridges many times since I started vaping and ruined several batteries. When this happened with the new sealed batteries, I was able to clean up the mess and continue on as if nothing ever happened.

I hope this helps.

Barb,

I have nothing to add to the advice given by the great minds here on ECF, except to say I completely quit analogs after 45 years of smoking. He can do it!

It may be a little hard in the beginning, but he CAN do it. He may in, the beginning, vape more than he smoked. I would buy samples of different menthol juices and once you find a few that he likes, buy large bottles. Buy enough that he doesn't run out. Buy spares of everything, don't let something silly send him back to the death stix.

I haven't touched an analog in 3 months & I have no desire to smoke, at all.

Good luck & God bless you for doing this for your soulmate.

I was a menthol smoker (Kools) and tried almost 30 types of menthol juice, looking for a match. I didn’t' find one. But what I found was several that I like. Both Halo menthols mentioned are pretty good. Menthol Extreme from Vapors Etc., Vermont Vapor's Menthol, Max Ultra Menthol from GoodEjuice, Robacco Menthol from Blue Mist, and the Menthol from Rockstar Vapors are all worthy of mention.

Sorry to give you so many options...

Yeah, what Tracy said!!! Don't worry about overwhelming me with the options. I know I've whined a bit about getting information overload, but that was when I was out in the great blue yonder of the Web. It's a little terrifying. LOL However, the information here is from REAL people who have REALLY tried what they are reccomending - that information is GOLD, in my book.

You guys are so amazing, tremendous, wonderful and kind (a bunch of other stuff, but I've already been to gushy). :) I have lots more reading to do, from the new rec's I've gotten. Thank you ever so much.

Turns out, he DOES want a cig-looking e-cig. At least to start. He also wants the 78mm size, oh dumb me. Glad I asked. OK, off to Smokeless Image.

I'll be back!!

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr... I'm a little frustrated, but not defeated. I think I've arrived at the conclusion that my best bet is a Smokeless Image Volt, white, with 78 mm anti-drip automatic batteries and an orange LED (in other words, nothing exotic, just a normal cig looking e-cig). Unfortunately, that animal doesn't appear to exist - even though every other possible configuration does. I've written them to see if my dream PV will be available any time soon. Whatever I end up with on that score, it's an easy bet that I will also get a fair sampling of menthol juices from the reccomendations I've received, so he can try them until he finds his fit.

In the meantime (i.e., while I wait for my unicorn PV), I will rely on the generosity of my Fairy GodVapers and their unbelievable kindness. Incoming PMs once I've gotten some sleep and my eyes have uncrossed, beautiful people. :)

Thank you all from the bottom of my pea-pickin' heart. Truly. Nite nite,

Sorry! It's not a unicorn PV, but one that they are out of stock with at the moment. It truly does exist! They are waiting for a replenishment shipment in the next few days. You can check with "Imagine" on their Official Smokeless Image thread and ask when they will arrive. (However, now that I think of it, their white might come with a red not an orange LED. For the first one that will be fine. Afterwards when hubby sees the other colors, he might decide to go with one of them. (SI has AWESOME colors!)

Wow the prices on the Volt are great, I might get one sealed auto batt and usb charger just to try it. They even sell the diamond covers and ecig skins and all those cool colors! You really can't beat the price. If you can't find the right color maybe they have a skin you could use to make it look white. ecig skins are great, I use them to color my cartos as well so I tell some apart from others with stickers on them. bnrk

If you get a battery and a charger and can afford it, get a packet of cartos as well. I haven't had the same success with KR808d 1's with other companies. Theirs are horizontal coils and truly part of the effect. If you have other cartos from other vendors, you can compare them.

FYI, they don't have white skins. Most people get the skins to cover the white batts that they thought that they wanted.

I wonder if Halo G6 cartos would fit, they are KR808-1 I believe and horizontal coil at the bottom. Is Volt vertical wire heat element? I really like the G6, but for the price the volt looks good and those sealed autos are great.
True about ecig skins, I love colors and designs etc, but thought just maybe they have a white or off white to help Barb out:) bnrk
