Did VPR magazine cross a line or does sex sell?

That's the problem with the gender binary we live with. Gender isn't real. It is a socially constructed set of "rules" about how men and women are supposed to look and act. And every culture (culture of religion, ethnicity, region, family, country, etc) has their own gender rules. Some cultures get it right with the idea that there are many gender expressions. We are limited only by what others tell us we should be doing and how we then decide to respond in the way we navigate the world.

I think I was probably barely into double digits when I figured out that I'm just not like other people, in many profound ways, so I stopped trying to be like them -- I like what I like, and if others (like my mom!) think I'm weird, oh well. Of course I had that whole drug/alcohol thing, which maybe was me *trying* really hard to fit in, and having to drug myself half senseless to do it -- when I got sober, I realized something about myself that I really had never known, in all those years of "party!" and going out to clubs, etc -- I'm NOT a social person at all; I'd far rather be by myself, reading, doing things on the computer, listening to my own choice of music, than go anywhere for any kind of social occasion. When I was in therapy during my depression, it took my therapist quite a while to understand that I'm not "withdrawn," I'm simply a loner; always have been, always will be -- and it made it really challenging to deal with the depression, since they're always telling you, get involved, do things, but that's just not NORMAL for me. I'm a perennial square peg. My son is, too, but it's funny, although he and I can get into some real bangup arguments (2 square pegs banging corners together!), mostly we rock along together really well; he cracks me up, by far one of the funniest people I've ever known.

But culture? Bah humbug. I like books.

Alrighty I guess I have been around more men than you Andria because let me tell you hun they can be just as prissy and play just as many games and oh my they even beat around the bush lol  I say people are people no matter where you are or where you go so ---------

Sure, they CAN be... but they don't tend to be -- prissy, that is. Say a really foul cuss word loudly in a group of people -- 80% of the females will get this look that says "Well, I NEVER!" -- and half of those will actually upbraid you on your language, like they're your mommy or something. But most of the men will ignore it, or just look around, to see what caused such profanity -- it might be interesting! :D Or, for example, an unplanned burp/belch -- a woman will be so embarrassed, she'll turn every shade of red/purple. A man will either look proud, or will simply go with "excuse me." And I think that applies to flatulence from the other end, as well.

Game-playing, yeah, you're right, some men do that, but it's not as prevalent as the female "say no, and it means yes; say yes, and it means no; say nothing, and let him read your mind." Men usually will say what they think or what they mean (or they will TRY, at any rate), or just go with "yes dear" if they don't think it's worth arguing about.

I'm speaking of generalities, not specifics. Naturally every individual is different, and generalities can't cover every specific -- my ex is one of the prissiest people I've ever known, and for the life of me, I can't figure out why I ever went out with him a 2nd time, nevermind married him. :D

I'm guessing the girl is a girlfriend of someone working for the mag. She's cute but I'd rather see more info on new products. The Internet is full of bikini babes.

One would think you could have both, or put another way, don't judge a magazine's content by it's center spread.

Unless you're a puritan. Then, by all means, stick to your principle of being morally offended by the mere sight of human flesh.

I am not a puritan or offended. I just don't think it has a place in a vaping magazine.

Have you seen the kind of people that are vapers? I think it fits perfectly with a large percentage of vapers. Yes, I know all kinds of people are vapers, but there's no ignoring that this targets your typical vaper. Another thing, who the hell reads magazines anymore? Or is this one of those online magazines that she's in? Either way she is quite purdy :p

Stopped in again and have to say.... not only does sex sell but start a thread on it and it will be discussed endlessly :)

For those for whatever reason do not think any of it belongs in a Vape Magazine........ start your own magazine and don't have it within the pages and don't discuss it. I am sure you will do just fine...........

As to the current gender ramblings, well theere are stark differences in the genders that go far beyond the fleshy bits, history and science can be looked at for any needed references. Sure, there will always be the exceptions and the exceptional, only a fool subscribes to a universal negative.

I am a woman and I find it odd that when I bought cigarettes there was no weird questions from the guys selling me cigarettes (i.e. asking me if I was as newb to smoking, or if I wanted ultra lights instead of american spirits, no judgement when I wanted to roll my own tobacco).

HOWEVER, at brick and mortar stores for vaping, the attitude you get from the employees when you are a female vaper is TOTALLY different then when you are a guy (for most vape shops). A lot of the new stores have very youthful owners who tend to have skanky promotional pictures of various scantily clad asian females vaping clouds on vape pens or pink mods. Ladies are always treated like newbs and always pointed towards starter kits or told "oh you build?" not necessarily in a bad way but slightly patronizing.

I don't have issues with VPR magazine, it is much like a tattoo magazine, showing pretty girls vaping instead girls tatted up. It is the brick and mortar stores that I have issues with. 3/4 of the stores I have been to I will NEVER go to again simply because the vibe is not about being able to find what you need or be introduced to something new. It is like an exclusive club for 20-something males who may or may not have ever smoked cigarettes heavily in their lives. They do it for the clouds. Which is not to say that it is a bad thing. But it makes it harder to find stores where females and older vapers feel welcome and not inundated with "youth vape culture" when you just want good customer service.

All in all, does sex sell: yes! But magazine advertisements are not nearly as damaging as a small business practices that try to make vaping some sort of "exclusive hobby" when I feel the vast majority of vapers get into vaping because they are trying to quit smoking cigs.

just my two cents...

I guess my thing is my complete lack of agreement with the idea that men and women are basically the same.
They clearly are not, if for no other reason than hormonal influences on their biology.

Do you happen to live in Southern California?

I know what you mean about the attitude to women... I noticed a marked difference when I walked in Steam Cigs with my Kayfun, rather than some clearo or other. :D And even a comment: "I see you've upgraded!" You betcha I've upgraded! I may be a "lightweight" in terms of my very-conservative builds (1.8Ω) but I sure did it myself -- learned by myself too, though with a lot of help here with pics of the steps along the way. When I first started, I did feel intimidated by what I considered a "man thing" (messing with electrical stuff) but I soon found it's no more a "man thing" than it is a "dog thing"!

I agree. Any of this "I don't consider myself a man/woman so I am not a man/woman" or "I was born a man/woman but now I'm a man/woman" is complete crap. If you were born a man/woman you're a man/woman for the rest of your life no matter what you cut off, add to yourself, inject, or how you present yourself. I guess some people can trick themselves into believing they're the other gender, but that doesn't make it so.

I have a little trouble going THAT far with my argument.

For instance there are people born "male" that have far less testosterone.
Or females that may have more than average.

I'm always fascinated by the fact that most female athletes in certain professions don't have any hips.
I'm not sure why that is, but I find it fascinating.

Sometimes I think that testosterone is a very big factor in our biology.
But I'm sure there are many other hormones, such as estrogen, that could play a huge part as well.
