Found something special at the dollar tree store, 80 100% pure cotton rounds. It's the same cotton wool that gauze/balls/q-tips/batting are made of but they are compressed into flat discs making them perfect to work with. I boiled a dozen of them to use, I could make a new wick every day for all my atties for like 2 years. What i really like about them is I can cut them to any shape I need. Vapor production is amazing. Easy to use, not as finicky as cheese cloth. I have tried about every type of cotton out there and these are definitely one of my favorites, better yet it was only 1 dollar.

Found sterile gauze pads in the supply cabinet at work, Appx how much does one use to make a wick?

For Vivi Nova I used a 1.5mm inner diameter SS mesh, in which total of 26 strands was good. I pulled 13 long strands through the coil (and mesh) with a needle threader type tool I made.

Some clearos might have larger wick slots, so more might be required. More strands on a Vivi Nova would require widening of the coil head's wick slots.

All gauze pads might not be created equal, so some might have thicker strands than the ones I use. Trial and error... When you pull the strands through, expect slight resistance, but it should be easy to move when dry.

What are you rewicking?

If it's a viva nova type head then you need to keep it small enough to fit snug but not tight in the slots. Early on, I made the mistake of trying a fat wick in one of my reduxes and it didn't work worth a hoot lol. At present, I'm rolling two small wicks from cheese cloth and they sort of stack in the slots without choking.

........ Guess I mistakenly thought I could just cut a hank of gauze similiar to SS and just roll it up:(
Can this be done with candle wick or yarn meaning purchase xyz candle wick cut to length and wrap a coil?

You probably can just cut some strips and roll them. I recommend trying two small wicks instead of one big one.

I like this video because of the clear camera focus. It shows using some 1/0 candle wick. You might be able to get a sense of the size by seeing how it fits in the slots. Start it at about 3.00. I roll my cheese cloth wicks slightly smaller than that candle wick and larger than the small silica wicks that he takes out of the vivi.

Pbusardo has a good video on the vivi as well.

They're make up pads... It's printed for different countries lol.

Just razzing you, When I first clicked on the pic the first thing that jumped out at me was them words the tampon one inparticular.
If someone could get past the idea of useing tampons they may well make a good wick. I think most are considered steril until open.
I highly doubt I will get past the other options in order to try actual Tampons myself as wicks, I used to hate going to the store if the wife asked me to pick them up for her whilst shopping.

Oh and just so you feel better about it you just keep on telling yourself there makeup pads:p:evil::laugh:

They're the best wick material I've tried out of all the different cottons I've tried so it doesn't really matter what you call it.

Any cotton we use as wick wasn't originally sold for our intended use. Cheese cloth and butchers twine was meant for food. Square braided cotton was meant for candles. Cotton Gauze was meant for wounds. Yarn and twine was meant for tying and knitting.

Square-braid is my daily goto. It takes some breaking in, but it wicks well and is easy to wrap coils around. I started using it in my vivi Novas, Minis, and Startdusts, and still use it in all my RBAs. See the "Wick wicki" in my tag for more info that was compiled by Tomcatt showing different types of wicks and information.

I use 100% cotton square-braid #1/0
32 awg A-1 Kanthal (4-5 wraps for the vivis = 1.9 to 2.4 ohms)
I've tried bamboo. I don't like the earthy taste
Have ordered hemp twine, but it's tricky; most hemp doesn't wick well apparently.

It's on my radar as I definitely want to give it a try. I'm liking the cheese cloth but I'm having some problems getting it too last longer than a few tankfuls through my reduxes.

Yesterday afternoon was a good example. I was doing great, then all of a sudden, wimpy vapor and that terrible feeling in my throat. I tried a few things to get it going again and then decided to tear it down and rewick it.

I examined it very closely. It had a little gunk on it, but not too bad, and a few burnt fibers but very few. It did seem to be very tight in the coil, and that's the only thing I found. I've been going thinner with my wicks but I'm going thinner still. It's amazing how much the cheese cloth swells.

Another problem I have is vanilla and caramel. I put them in everything, and they're both notorious for gunking up an atty, especially the vanilla.

You're definitely right on certain juices gunking up wicks and coils faster. I change my wicks about 1-2 times a week depending on the juice, gunkier juices seem to make my wicks last about 4 days and cleaner juices once a week. What i like about my rounds is they're more compressed than other cotton wools so they hold together a lot stronger so I can change the wick without having to change the coil every time. Cheese cloth is more finicky out of the different cottons, I had to drill my vivi nova slots to allow for expansion (4mm hole for 2mm dry wick). The cotton wool type like my cotton rounds are insanely absorbent, much easier to work with. I also use very little cotton for wicks now, when I first started I was making them about 10 times thicker lol. If you ever want any help I have some good methods that work every time for cheese cloth and cotton wools, no break in period bad flavors at all. A tutorial may be in hand soon.

Great tip and something I'm going to explore. I've been wrapping my coils around the inner air flow tube of an old ce2, then threading the cheese cloth through. I don't know what diameter that works out to be, but with a 4/5 wrap, it's usually around ~2.2 ohms, fits well in my reduxes, and makes for a great looking coil. If I can pull the old out, and thread the new in, I'm goin'na be tickled pink. lol.

I picked some of these up today Mack on your recommendation along with some yarn. This will be my first attempt at cotton, I'll be using a vivi nova. How do you cut up the pads to make a wick? Do you roll it?

I stopped by the Dollar Tree and picked up some of the same type as Mack showed a picture of. I'm anxious to try it, but all four of my reduxes and my new gen 1 from COV are all vaping like a freight train at the moment. I guess I could try it on the gen 1. All I'd need to do is pull the cheese cloth out and pull this in using the existing coil.
