I want to know to, because this is the juice I use.

The United States National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has suggested that diacetyl, when used in artificial butter flavoring (as used in many consumer foods), may be hazardous when heated and inhaled over a long period.

Workers in several factories that manufacture artificial butter flavoring have been diagnosed with bronchiolitis obliterans, a rare and serious disease of the lungs. The cases found have been mainly in young, healthy, non-smoking males. There are no known cures for bronchiolitis obliterans except for lung transplantation.

While several authorities have called the disease "Popcorn Worker's Lung," a more accurate term suggested by other doctors may be more appropriate, since the disease can occur in any industry working with diacetyl: diacetyl-induced bronchiolitis obliterans.

According to the SGS certificate which was once made available online from DeKang (which i would link to, but it doesn't appear to be there anymore, at least not in the same location, so good thing I took notes when it WAS there), the full ingredient list is:

  • Propylene Glycol (77%)
  • Ethanol (10%)
  • 1-Malic Acid (3%)
  • 3-Methylcyclopentane-1,2-dione (2.5%)
  • Vanillin (2.5%)
  • 2,3,5,6-Tetramethyl Pyrazine (1.5%)
  • Acetyl Pyrazine (1.5%)
  • Menthol (1%)
  • 2,3,5-Trimethyl Pyrazine (0.3%)
  • Rhodinol (0.3%)
  • 2-Acetylpyridine (0.2%)
  • Beta-Damascenone (0.2%)
I believe this covers all chemicals used in all flavors of liquid (so some flavors may have some of these ingredients, others may only have a few of them), but i have never seen Diacetyl listed anywhere. Please be aware that Acetyl is completely different from Diacetyl - the molecular structure of Acetyl is C2 H3 O+, while Diacetyl is C4 H6 O2.

It appears as though the particular chemical used for buttery flavoring would be Acetyl Pryazine (molecular formula C6 H6 N2 O), and 2-Acetyl Pyridine (molecular structure C6 H9 NO). According to sources, these are used for:

ACETYL PYRAZINE
≥99.00%, NI, Kosher
Odor: Caramel, Nutty, Popcorn, Sweet
Suggested Uses: Bread, Cocoa, Coffee, Nut, Potato

2-ACETYL PYRIDINE
≥99.00%, NI, Kosher
Odor: Fatty, Oily, Popcorn, tobacco
Suggested Uses: Bread, Chocolate, Coffee, Nut, tobacco

A good friend of mine has a master's in biochemistry, and works in the pharmaceutical industry as a cancer researcher. I sent him this chemical list a while back and he claimed not to have seen anything there that set off any red flags, though he admitted to not taking much time to research each chemical individually, so this reply was off the top of his head.

Just as a disclaimer - please take my biochemist friend's opinion with a grain of salt, as he made it quite clear that he was not necessarily asserting that all or any of these chemicals were 100% safe under the conditions which they are being used in vaporizing devices. Only prolonged independent studies by certified labs and technicians can determine the safety of these chemicals under the circumstances that we are using them, so neither him, myself, or EastMall are making any health claims whatsoever.

Also, due to the fact that this list is no longer on the DeKang website, I cannot guarantee that this list is currently complete, valid, or accurate. I have posted it as a general reference according to information I found on the liquid manufacturer's website in the past.

UPDATE:

I have found an extensive list of SGS/MSDS certificates, including VG (Vegetable Glycerin, a substitution for Propylene Glycol for those with allergies to Propylene Glycol) varieties, KFDA certification, toxicity testing reports, and a food hygiene license, located here: http://www.yndekang.com/certificate.asp

If anyone can find a way to get a larger image of these to see the chemical listings, please provide us with links.

UPDATE 2:

I have emailed Boge/DeKang with a request for full sized scans of their SGS/MSDS, KFDA, and toxicity testing certificates. I will let you all know when/if I receive a response.

thank you very much for the info. looking forward to learning more.
what happened to the claims that ejuice is pg/vg nicotine+flavorings only? i guess all those ingredients make up the flavorings?

You are correct. All of those other ingredients are various natural and artificial food flavorings. They have fancy names which may make them all seem artificial (and some are), but many are extracted directly from natural food sources.

I'm not an expert in chemistry or particularly food flavorings, but from what I have found, foods have naturally occurring chemicals which give them their distinct flavors. Take an apple for instance - out of the entire chemical makeup of an apple, there are only one or two which give it it's actual flavor. The chemical(s) can then be extracted from actual apples and then concentrated into what would be considered an artificial flavoring, even though it came from natural sources. There is actually a very fine line between what is allowed to be labeled as artificial or natural flavors in food flavorings.

Read more about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flavor
