My wife and I are soon to be proud owners of 2 provaris. While most of the batts we have are AW IMRs we do have a couple of trustfires.

Are these safe to use in a provari?

Hi,

let's say less safe (and performing) than IMR, especially AW, batteries, but they do work nonetheless; I know that first hand, for I sometimes use a protected 18650 3100mAh trustifre in my provari v2 :)

IMR batteries are made with a different chemistry (lithium-manganese), so they should be safer than other batteries; at the same time they have a very high 'C' (discharge) factor, making them the right choice for high-wattage vapers.

a note about trustfire, and in general non-IMR, batteries: you better check they're protected batteries... should a non-IMR battery fail, the results are potentially much more spectacular/dangerous than with IMR batteries.

the downside of protected non-IMR batteries is that if you ask for too much wattage out of them, the on-board protection cicuit will trip and you'll need to extract and re-insert the battery in the provari. it happens to me, sometimes.

their upside, on the other hand, is that they pack more capacity per volume unit than IMR batteries... for instance 18650 IMR batteries currently top out at 2000 mAh, while Li-Ion can easily exceed 3000 mAh.

That said, I don't believe that using non-IMR and/or non-AW batteries voids the warranty: I think provape's recommendation is just for keeping their customers on the safe(r) side.

what xpen said is correct. I tried a protected trustfire 18650 in my provari. it would work most of the time but sometimes it would refuse to fire till i pulled the battery. What was happing is the boost circuit on the provari was requesting enough juice from the battery to trigger the protection circuit and shutting off the battery. Most protection circuits will flip back just by breaking continuity, ie removing them from the mod, but some require a period of time sitting out and then a charge cycle.

So your trustfire will work, but it will be spotty at best, they just dont have a high enough discharge rate to satisfy the needs of the provari.

AW IMR's or Panasonic CGR18650CH(with the button top, flat top wont work, this is the best damn battery out there) are the way to go.
