My typical rides aren't all that hilly. It was something of a surprise to find how much I use nearly all the gears. It's more an issue of settling into a cadence of pedaling and maintaining that no matter what speed you're riding at, plus having some low gears for hills.
As to whether your old bike is worth trying to sell, I'm afraid I don't know anything about that. I do notice some interest in vintage bikes, but that's about the extent of it. Maybe try to find similar bikes on e-bay and Craigslist?
