This bothers me too, what proper battery from radio shack? Didn't they mention Lithium not Li Ion? And these were stacked batteries, yikes something is amiss here!
The user could be saying the #'s were right, but non rechargeable are not the proper batteries, we have to get the word out to people, this is not correct. bnrk
I also think the more that APV/Mod sellers have warnings right on their site about using the correct batteries, the better off users will be. Fortunately for me the two APV's types I bought had lots of warnings about what batteries to use and what not to use and why. I took it for granted that all sellers did the same, but I guess maybe some don't. I know alot more has been added lately and that is good thing. bnrk
I can think of a couple reasons. First, if the guy went into Radio Shack and asked for an AW17670 battery and didn't say protected, Radio Shack is in the clear. There are unprotected versions of the AW17670. Second, his lawyer is looking to settle and he thinks that Radio Shack will have the time and resources to drag it out and/or fight it. Puresmoker probably doesn't.
Actually I talked to Cash the other day and he said RS is being sued. He may have mispoken but he did say they were a part of the lawsuit.

They aren't, here is the PDF of the lawsuit, they are suing Ignition L.P. also, a subsidiary of Radio Shack who just happens to manufacture the batteries. Note Ignitions address in item #3 in the suit, 300 RadioShack Cir, Ft Worth, TX.
I was in Radio Shack the other day picking up some boxes and switches. Came time to check out and the clerk asked what that was I was carrying (my box mod). I quickly explained what it was and that the parts were to make a couple cheapo boxes for friends who want to try one out. The subject came to batteries, and look out! Without having any idea that batteries come in different sizes and types, he was quickly laying out alkaline, NiMH, and even reached over and grabbed a primary (non-rechargeable) lithium battery for me! Needless to say, I quickly told him not to sell any of their batteries to e-cig users as they were the wrong type and were dangerous if used improperly.

Exactly. These people are there to sell you whatever they can and have no real knowledge of your application. They either assume that you know what you need, or they are just altogether clueless.
Oh my gosh how dangerous! This is the problem, the clerks do not know mods/APV needs and many new mod/APV owners are battery clueless, what a bad combination- yikes! brnk
Really it's a little much to expect a clerk at a Radio Shack to know the differences in the batteries or what a PV needs. It's our responsibility. I can't think of a way around that but, I suspect we are going to start seeing cautions and links to batteries on mod sites.

In either case, what you buy is your responsibility, assuming no manf defects. BTW, our local RS employees only know the myriad cell phones and plans!
I had some idiot at Radio Shack sell me unprotected, non-rechargeable batts for my Vapage V-Mod last year. I didn't check them before I put 'em on the charger and they nearly exploded. Luckily I caught the error before they did!! I went back to him and scolded him harshly.
And let me also add that I asked him several times to be sure that they were rechargeable. In the end though, it's my responsibility to triple-check.

It's not just Radio Shack (although the rule for employment there is being a sales person, not knowledge of the products.) You can buy the wrong batteries anywhere.
The basic rules are:
1) Never recharge a non-rechargeable battery.
2) Know what type of battery your PV was designed to run on.
3) Unless your PV was designed to run on NiHM batteries, you should always buy the "protected" version of the battery.
4) Use the correct recharger for the battery. (There is no correct recharger for a non-rechargeable battery.)
