When in a public place like a bookstore, restaurant, coffee shop, business office, do ask permission to vape?

My job takes me to a lot of client offices and today I was working on a clients computer and I asked if she minded if I used my e-cig. She said, "no problem, I use one myself". I thought that was pretty cool.

Never. I just don't vape in those small places. The exception being a bar where it's a simple matter of asking the barkeep. Also, I'll stealth vape in a place like a mall just because it's so freaking huge.[/QUOTE]

Usually when you're a considerate type, you can kinda "feel" the situation. Depending on that, of course, in the one you were in I might have asked if it was okay to step outside for a vape and left it to them to say... you can vape right here.. I do. I've only been in the situation once and it was in a tiny VA hospital social worker's office going over Hubby and my Living Will instructions... stressful to start with but we had been in there two hours and I don't care much for social-worker attitudes adding to the stress. I just wiped it out, taking two stealths, put it back and told both of them since, their mouths were hanging open, I was sorry but it wouldn't infect them. That's not a typo but it probably was a Freudian slip. Other than that, I've never vaped in a small public area.

This. I access my environment. If I consider vaping indoors, I ask myself who might be offended if I do.

It is already known that Starbucks has made a national policy to not allow vaping in their chains.

If in a restuarant or bar that is crowded, I will ask an employee if it is allowed. If the place is only sparsely populated, I may go ahead and vape discreetly, not drawing attention to myself. If the employee says no vaping allowed, I respect that and go outside where it is allowed.

I vape discreetly while in the grocery store or Walmart. I pick an empty isle, take a couple toots, and put my mod away.

I stealth vape at the cinema. I always sit in the back row, wait until the lights are out. I do a double inhale technique which eliminates most of the exhaled vapor. What no one else see's is no one else's business.

Frankly...if smoking is not permitted, I don't do it. (But that's me.....)

I'm with you on that !! I act like I'm smoking......I still go outside and away from the doors. I can still be a little immature when somebody talks to me a certain kind of way about anything. So if it keeps me out of cuffs, LoL

I like and agree with most of what's already been said. I used to say "Use common sense..." alot, but I learned long ago that "common" sense isn't so common after all! That being said, MOSTLY if you're not allowed to smoke, I don't vape. HOWEVER, it's NOT smoking, it's vaping, and while I do agree that we don't know if it's 100% safe long term to one's PERSONAL health, and perhaps even to someone exposed CONTINUALLY to exhaled nicotine infused vapor, especially since not all liquids are created equally, I DO KNOW that someone walking within a few feet or recently exhaled vapor is at virtually NO risk whatsover to any harmful side effects! I mean seriously, do these people that have a problem with it not clean their bathroom, ovens, etc., or ever been around one that has recently been cleaned? Do these people not live in the same smog filled cities that everyone else does virtually, or been to one? Do they drive a car, mow the lawn etc.!! I mean come on, critical thinking people I just want to yell, but alas, some people, A LOT anymore it would seem are just too lazy to think for themselves and just soak in regurgitate whatever the media or their favorite spokespersons be it politician, preacher, teacher, parents, friends etc. spews out at them! So for me, it just depends and I agree with "feeling out the situation" if need be, asking, refraining, and "stealth vaping", so again, for me, it depends on several different factors.

I was at a medium sized bar and grill tonight as a matter of fact that was moderately populated but not even packed. I asked the waiter if it was permissible and he said others have there and so far they didn't have a problem with it. It being the rural area it is, I was somewhat surprised, but I've also learned that their are A LOT more people doing it here then I would have originally thought! (WE'RE EVERYWHERE! ) LOL ;)

While I do refrain from doing it inside non-smoking places for the most part, I'll also admit as someone else did on this thread to discreetly doing it inside of Walmart after being there for an extended amount of time, both in the restroom or in an empty aisle. I just held it in my mouth until practically no vapor was expelled. As far as outside goes, just like when I was a smoker, and while I didn't hang out in doorways and entrance ways smoking when it wasn't allowed, I'll be whatever if I didn't smoke on my way to my car or behind a tree out of the way somewhere on non-smoking campuses such as the hospital! Usually when you're there chances are YOU'RE pretty stressed out, or at least I WAS! So, yeah, I'm not going to NOT vape outside in the same manner, and to be expected to is just beyond ridiculous IMHO, (above rant applies here as well!),!!!

When I vape in the car with my children, I roll the window down. If someone was riding with me I didn't know well, I'd ask them if they minded and do the same. At home, I don't vape "in my kid's faces" but I don't refrain from vaping occasionally in the same room as them. I have air cleaners and fans going around my house at all times anyways, and NEVER smoked in the same house as them. I would ALWAYS ask in someone else's house, and would just refrain unless I was going to be there for awhile, or step aside. It's hard to answer this extensively IMHO, because it really depends on who, what, when, where etc. so I think the "feel it out" answer is probably the best one of them all!

It's AMAZING that these people SO concerned about all this "public safety" vaping in these situations are EVEN AROUND with ALL the smoking that went on EVERYWHERE just a few short decades ago!!!

If I go to a pub I always ask whether it's ok to vape before ordering a drink. If they say no (which is seldom these days) I go somewhere else.

Same here and whilst the Dutch are way more liberal minded than some other nationalities (cough cough) ;) you might be surprised to learn that vaping isn't always permitted.

Depends on the situation. Mostly I ask first. I met up with a fellow member, EddardInWinter, and I asked if we could, at the place we were meeting, beforehand. It was no problem. :)

Some places you just know not to even ask. I wouldn't think of asking at a Ruth's Chris, for instance. A lot of times, I set my PV on the table and most of the time I will get asked what it is by the waitress. At that point the dialog begins and I find out if it is ok or not. If not, no biggie. But ten to one, I think twice about revisiting the establishment.

This is common in my area. Many places that have a bar permit vaping in the bar area, even if that place is also a restaurant. I won't generally do it in the restaurant section, but in the bar area...vapes away! Very nice of you to arrange a vape friendly place for us, Ms. Robin.
