Do you boil your Japanese organic cotton?

Perhaps I just got a bad batch. It looks organic: little specs of cotton hull, slightly brown color (un bleached). Should I pre-burn my wire? I fire it with the battery to tweak my coil shape and tightness. Do I need to burn it too?

I mean, no. I fire my coils till they fire evenly/are red hot. Any hotter and you risk potentially breaking the legs/leads (it's a bummer when it happens).

Did your Japanese cotton come in sheets? My Koh Gen Do cotton comes like that, and I haven't noticed any bad flavor or anything from it. That said though, I still do a "priming" before my first vape after I re-wick, meaning I'll soak the cotton in e-liquid and then just burn it all off (without vaping it) until the cotton is more or less dry. It'll also help me pinpoint spots in the cotton that don't have juice freely flowing in them/get out "juice pockets" as I call them.

So to answer your question, no, I don't boil my Japanese organic cotton. As far as I know, that's not necessary. Neither is boiling organic cotton for that matter (from what I've heard). I still do the priming thing, otherwise I notice a "papery" taste on that first drip (goes away after that though).

EK, sounds like you may be new to Japanese cotton ?
Did you split your pads in half so you get two x two-in squares at half the original thickness ?
I build coils on 1.6mm mandrel (1/16in), with 29awg Kanthal A1 so I use 1.6mm plus 2xthe thickness of the wire, say 0.3mm = 2.2mm and cut a strip 2.5 to 3mm off the pad along the longer part of the pad, to keep the fibres lined up.
Tip I picked up on here, if your atty with coil is on top of your mod, when you pull the cotton through the coil, if it wants to topple your mod over then your wick is too thick. (it will swell to fill the coil when it gets wet)
I've been using Shiseido cotton (similar to KohGenDo) in TaifunGT's and now in Reo attys for 9months without any probs.

Ny,
It came in two-in squares. I am waiting to hear back on the brand so I don't get it again. I tried it again, primed it and same problem. Where do you get you cotton from?
Kim

Right off the Koh Gen Do website!

But yeah, as Daved123 said, you should be splitting the pads in half. Each square pad actually comes out to two pads after splittng. I've tried NOT splitting it, and the results aren't so great. The cotton ends up so thick, and it's hard to wick.

Also that "if the wick topples your mod" trick, I had never heard of. Will pay attention to that next time I'm wicking.

Japanese cotton? LOL...The way over prices gimmicks that are popping up in this e-cig biz are increasing. Organic cotton balls(80 count bag $3, Walgreens) perfect taste and nic hit in my all my RDA's and RTA's. 28 gauge coil (.8 - 1.3 ohms). You can also get large spools of various gauge s.s. wire at local hardware stores for a fraction of what the e-cig places are selling.

Don't knock it till you've tried it!

You should not boil cotton, rayon or anything else, otherwise you will contaminate your wicking material.
I've never heard that, do you have a source? I've had no issues with steaming at all.

You wanna make sure that the stainless steel wire's actual content is something that you can safely vape! A lot of these are coated copper wires!

Not only that, but organic cotton (on first vape) has a "paper" taste, it's pretty much undeniable. After the first drip worth of juice, the taste goes away. I assume it's just smaller bits of cotton particulate (likely) being vaporized. Regardless of what it is, even my girlfriend noticed it (and she doesn't really vape).

hmm, don't use cotton, except for cleaning mods and stuff, but do pretreat all fibers used for wicking. Find it flushes out any cross contamination and helps break in the fiber more readily.

Used cotton for a short time in the beginning. Even when using sterile cotton, would get a cottony taste for a tank or so. Found parboiling the cotton helped leach out this flavor and break in time was quicker.

My primary wick of choice is Ramie Top fiber, though do use degummed hemp fiber occasionally. Like the nutty accent hemp gives to some juices. :D
