Somewhere in time.
I do vape in my house-and around my children. I smoked around them and when I carried them as well........my husband still smokes around them. Honestly? If you smoked around your children, why not vape around them-since I quit analogs (and even though my husband still smokes) both of my children have had a lot less allergies/breething issues and colds. And in truth-smoking around an asthmatic 17 year old did make me feel horrid-but vaping doesn't bother me at all. Maybe, btw, this makes me an awful person, but my kids think I'm great so I doubt it-and both of them went through a LOT more than quitting ciggs with me (I quit drinking, ...., and ....... five years ago cold turkey, sorry I couldn't ditch the ciggs), so maybe that's why............I dunno.

at first i was hiding it. my kids knew i smoked. and they know its bad for you. when i got the unit i was vaping indoors but not while they were around. then i sat down with each, individually, and asked them how they felt about if i were to quit smoking. they liked the idea and so i showed them my ecig. now they are very supportive and dont think bad of it. they understand that smoking is bad, and they are now understanding that if they ever start it would be so difficult to quit and try to get healthy again.

I'm hitting this point myself - I've eliminated certain juices from my lineup because I'm concerned about exhaling them as well as inhaling them. (Not trying to start That Conversation here, just saying.)

i don't have children yet, but many of my friends do, and i choose not to vape in front of them whenever possible.

i have two friends in particular who both smoke in front of their 3-year old, but only outdoors on the patio. i brought my eGo and some juices out one time and the little girl asked "what's that?" i didn't want her getting any ideas that it was candy liquid or anything like that, so i told her "it's my special medicine that my doctor gave me to quit smoking, but you should never touch it or else it will make you very sick." it was funny, because later that night, i offered one of my friends a few puffs and their daughter says "no mommy! it'll make you very sick!". haha, i thought that was cute. but at least now she knows what it looks like and won't touch it if i get careless and leave it around the house somewhere. though i'm especially careful about that.

i have another friend who has two little girls, maybe 2 and 4, and him and i were sitting at a local restaurant not long ago having a bite to eat and kicking back a few brews. he knows what my e-cig is and the restaurant knew what it was and said it was fine that i used it inside (it's a non-smoking establishment). his wife showed up with the kids at some point and i put my eGo away. my friend said "nah man, it's cool, it's not smoke or anything". i still felt weird about it and opted to step outside to use it from then on. although i didn't feel weird at all about drinking beer in front of them, kind of hypocritical i guess.

i just feel like vaping is a better alternative to smoking for me, yet still not something a non-smoking child should be witnessing or even admiring, whether it's safe for them to be around or not.

I think I should have included this in my initial post. When I was full time smoking, I smoked in my car. Not with the kids in it or anything. And I always tried to clear it out by driving with the windows down and the sunroof open. But it still made me feel bad, even though we use the van most of the time that no one smokes in to go places. I'm no saint, not in the least. I have just always felt guilty for smoking to begin with. That's why I guess I "hide" it in a way. But like I said before, when I feel the time is right I will explain to my kids that Daddy was a smoker for a long time and switched to vaporizing to help me quit. I just don't feel that it's in their best interest to explain it to them at their age unless they question me about it.

Not any more. I was chain vaping while playing some madden with my son and he complained of a fierce headache. I didn't think anything of it and kept on going but after a little while he wanted to lay down because his head hurt so bad. A few days later we were gaming again and played for about an hour with no problems. I got up and grabbed my vape box and commenced to chain vaping, within 10 minutes he started complaining of a headache again, and it dawned on me it might just be the vaping since we're in his room which is a bit small and the door and windows were closed. Since then I'd rather not risk it so I just don't vape around him. We've had several gaming sessions since with no headaches, while it's not hard data, there's no point in risking it to me.

I've never smoked in my cars or in the house, but I do vape pretty much everywhere, except when my son is around now.

Goodness, try strawberry or peach from BWB for that road trip. They smell amazing on exhale, and everyone who's walked into my house during the strawberry vaping says something to the effect of "That smells amazing? What are you baking???"

Shanagan
It's actually on order, the Strawberry from BWB... because of your post!

Thanks for the recomendation! Can't wait to try it!

I do vape around my kids. They were aware of my battle with smoking and knew that I was having a terrible time quitting and then going back to it. They are very proud of me and know that I am happy and healthier then if I smoked analogs. To me, they have witnessed the battle, the tears and the frustration with smoking. They know that I am making an effort to make better choices for myself and for them. Now I dont have to worry about smelling bad when coming inside, or coughing all the time. I am proud that they are proud of me. If anything, hopefully they will make the choice not to smoke after seeing what I have been through with that nasty habit.

OMG...just left a lengthy post, and lost it from not being logged in. Guess I chit chatted to much and my higher power was telling me that I was over sharing! Yes I vape around my son (he will be 13 this Wednesday). Honestly I love the fact that I no longer have to stand outside in the elements. My son and husband do smell certain vapes, and they are quite good at guessing the flavor.

Nope. They knew I smoked, and they saw me do it in the out-of-doors, but just because I can feel ok about vaping inside, I don't.

Why? Some people might hate me, but I would hope that our generations would be the last of the nic fiends in the world. I saw people smoke when I grew up. I hated it. I became a smoker. Others wanted to emulate what they saw. We all started using tobacco from the examples we knew. I don't want to be that example. I don't want my children to start smoking or vaping. I don't want other people's children to see me doing something that is highly addictive. They would be better off not knowing this addiction. I wish I had never picked up and lit a cigarette, and I wish our kind would just quietly fade away.

I agree with you. I was never proud of being a smoker, and have a strong feeling that maybe I wouldn't be if my parents weren't, and I'm not really a proud vaper either. I enjoy it and think it is a great alternative to smoking, but in all reality I'd rather not need neither one. I would not smoke or vape in front of my kids if I had any living at home, but that's a personal choice.

constant state of confusion
I do vape around my kids but they are 25, 24, 21, and 20. That being said, my grandchildren know that I vape. They are 7, 6, 5, 3, 2. 20 months, and new one due tomorrow. I have discussed with the older ones about how bad smoking is and that it is a huge mistake to ever try it even once. They know it is bad for your health and makes you stinky so people don't want to be around you. They are actually thrilled that I started vaping. The 6 year old couldn't wait to through Gram's analogs in the trash. I do vape in another room. I don't see the need to go outside because that is where I smoked. To me vaping isn't bad. I don't hide that I am a vaper any more than I would hide that I am a coffee drinker. I don't think nicotine is any worse than caffiene. (She says while sipping her 40 0z iced latte.) It all depends on the delivery system.

I feel that, too.

I don't want to model addiction for children, and I definitely don't want to do anything that could possibly suggest that smoking is okay. At a certain age, maybe at the aforementioned Santa Claus threshold, you have to start talking openly with children about issues like this.

I'm not suggesting anyone hide their behaviors. Nothing causes us to be overweight, addicted, or insecure quite as much as shame over those things. But I do feel a responsibility to treat a pointless addiction like a burden, even if it's arguably fairly harmless.

And speaking of harmless: not one of us knows for sure what the effects of second-hand vapor are, especially at close quarters, and I think that's worth keeping in mind.

I was going to quote FreakyStylie, but since Jammin already did, I won't. All my kids are under 6, and none of them ever saw me smoke. I agree that I don't want them to smoke or vape, and I also believe they're too young to understand the difference.

I am grateful we have vaping and I love it, but I don't want my kids to do it.
