Quite a bit of variation among Canadians, eh?
0mg: There is a major difference in mentality between Quebec and the rest of Canada as people are mostly of French origin here.
I wouldn't go vaping in a restaurant or bar unless it was specified that it is permitted, but I don't hide any more than smokers do either. I don't blow huge clouds in public as it feels wrong as I now know how annoying the smell of cigarette is, so I won't throw oil onto the fire, but perhaps people have a chance of noticing for themselves that vaping is much less annoying. I should mention vaping is common enough on the main street downtown Montreal and the director of the Metro (underground train) has announced on the radio that he authorized vaping on the train, but to keep it reasonable (I don't use the Metro, but I thought it was well worth mentioning).
Ontario has always been a step ahead of Quebec on cleanliness, although I'm fairly certain that Quebec banned indoors smoking first of any place in north America (correct me with source if I'm wrong, but I did work in public when the law passed, so I have a good degree of certainty). Perhaps Quebec can be a pioneer on this one too as our vape shops did win a court ruling against the government that their activity is not illegal. I don't count on winning the masses on my own, but I'm open to converting smokers one by one if they're ready for it.
I do travel quite a bit and I always observe first if people hide to smoke or just do it in front of bars, hotels and the likes. Legal distances from the main door can vary and I yet have to see a bar where people are not allowed to smoke right at the door. I do know that in some cities people have to go to the back to smoke, but I haven't been there yet.
Still, I like blowing clouds at home and when I'm inside my office -not other people's office.
