i dont really understand this. for years the tobacco industry has attempted to make a "safer" cigarette. they tried marketing what was called the eclipse cigarette
Eclipse (cigarette) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

i remember that nova ran a special a couple years ago called "the quest for a safer cigarette".they said there is no such thing.
NOVA Online | Search for a Safe Cigarette | "Safer" Cigarettes: A History

now fast forward to today and the development of the PV and the government and the tobacco companies want to kill it. they want it off the market. it makes no sense, that we finally have the "safer cigarette" and now all they want to do is kill it off. i guess they should have been careful of what they wished for. i guess they dont like it that someone else besides them came up with the idea. screw them

Its Big Pharma that want to kill it not really BT - BT like nicotine users, they have a product for nicotine users (they can make top notch liquid nicotine if they want to , they have the growers in place already), but BP want us to suffer on cigs so they can give us pills and patches and gums (when we fail over and over they make more money selling us more pills and patches and gum), and if we get sick they have more pills. The State want us to suffer on cigs so they can get their tax cuts otherwise everyone will have to pay more and thats bad for votes.
If they really cared about our health they would have banned tobacco products YEARS ago - but they haven't and don't plan to.

You know, I'd say that it's not only about the money, it's about the uproar that would happen, too. But smokers only make 21% of the U.S. population, so if they go by the "will of the people" then 80% wouldn't care if cigarettes were banned tomorrow. So, it's definitely about the money.

Not only the tax revenue and the BT lobby, but the cost of policing the black market that would spring up - it'd be a repreat of the liquor prohibition, abliet in a smaller size, since not as many people smoke than drink.

Another thought was, "What other product would they allow to keep selling that was shown to harm so many?"

But then, I thought about Chantix and all of the other drugs with severe reaction warnings. And the food industry, where powerful conglomerates have infiltrated the government and allowed for a food industry with very little regulation, laws which only benefit those large companies and squash competition, subsidies which use our tax dollars so corn growers can sell corn for less than cost (yeah, I watched Food, Inc), etc.

Yep, it's definitely all about the money and not just the tobacco industry. It's those powerful enough in industry to influence the government and get what is best for them, whether or not it harms the "little guy" and/or the consumer.

i see ads for chantex at work all of the time. no thank you, not interested. lovely side effects by the way, may cause suicidal thoughts? so its perfectly ok for us to take something that could cause us to want to kill ourselves.... but vaping is unacceptable? makes no sense. i like BP even less than BT. they are criminals and the fda allows them to operate that way. how many times do i turn on the tv and hear about some new drug on the market. you often hear two phrases.

"ask your doctor if such and such is right for you"

and

"may cause death"

lets see if it may cause death than i dont care what my doctor says, its not right for me.

if big pharma had it their way we would be doped on a whole medicine cabinet of god know what.

NO THANKS

not interested in chantex or anything else they think they have to offer me. i enjoy my nicotine and have switched to a safe delivery method. i was smoking 1+ packs a day, now i smoke 2-3 cigarettes a day. i managed to do that overnight. soon i will only be smoking an occasional cigarette

We're already doped on medicine - the US deal in more prescriptions and less herbal type (proven herbal not flakey ones) and non pharmecutical remedies than any other country in the west.
Our diet is full of salt and sugar and bad fats which means we need more drugs as we get older and sicker.
'Brave new world' where BP want us doped up on a medicine cabinet full of god knows what isn't where we are headed because we are already there.

(And the most frightening possible side effect from Chantix isn't suicidal ideation its the less discussed 'homicidal' ideation)

BP scares me. We were just forced to switch health insurance and I've been searching for a new doctor
since January.
I have fibromyalgia, but it was under complete control with my old doc between one prescription, vitamins
and acupuncture. I've met with FOUR doctors so far who are trying to force me onto Lyrica, but none could
admit they have patients it actually works on.

My nephew just finished his residency in New York and even he says the kick-backs doctors get from
Pharmaceutical companies is criminal. He could (is holding out though) pay back his
$100,000 in student loans in two to three years from prescribing bonuses.
The average person watching ads doesn't know this goes on. :(
They go to their doctors demanding the medicine they saw on TV.

There is an amazing amount of money spent pushing drugs on the public. I'm not surprised in the least that
BP doesn't want ecigs becoming mainstream.

How true it is.

Thats why these people with PhD's [whom we refer to as "doctors"] are constantly telling people they have something wrong with them like ADHD, depression, etc... so they can rope them into a vicious cycle of medications that don't work and only compound the problem even more.

I tend to agree. BP only looks out for themselves, so though does BT. BT though wants a slice of the e-pie because there has been $100 million in profits by small manufacturers. It is all about the money. I feel though that all these e-cig companies need to stick their necks on the line, just like NJOY and SE did. Why are they waiting for these companies to do what the entire industry needs to do? I think it is bs.

I just read not too long ago that doctors are looking into Wellbutrin to treat video game addiction lol.

http://pagingdrgupta.blogs.cnn.com/2010/08/24/video-game-addiction-helped-with-antidepressant/

Here's some side effects you could face just because you can't turn the Xbox off-

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue, unusual hoarseness); blurred vision or other vision changes; changes in sexual desire or ability; chest pain; confusion; dark urine; delusions; fainting; fast or irregular heartbeat; fever, chills, or sore throat; hallucinations; hearing problems; menstrual changes; new or worsening mental or mood changes (eg, concentration problems, depression, panic attacks, aggressiveness, agitation, anxiety, impulsiveness, irritability, hostility, exaggerated feeling of well-being, inability to sit still); red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin; seizures; severe headache or dizziness; severe or persistent joint or muscle pain; severe or persistent nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain; severe or persistent nervousness, restlessness, or trouble sleeping; shortness of breath; suicidal thoughts or attempts; tremor; unusual swelling; yellowing of the skin or eyes.

yeah because electronic cigarettes are taking away the millions of tax dollars that the government is benefiting from, and the increase in medical issues from smoking cigarettes. It is running the world basically, and electronic cigarettes would take away from that revenue stream. Just put a small tax on e-cigarettes, the gov. is soo dumb!

Re: the OP

Oddly enough, I used to smoke Eclipse cigarettes. Mostly tasteless things except for the menthol. Pure vapor!

Trust me, PVs are much nicer in flavor and convenience. Cheaper to boot!

It may well be that the regulations that prohibited additions to tobacco products may have sunk any chances for them to make a truly palatable "vaping" cigarette. The carbon monoxide they produced probably wasn't too healthy either. The real obstacle marketwise was probably the lack of flavor. I know I felt much better smoking those rather than a regular cigarette and that's why vaping finally caught my attention. After all, I already knew it could work.

What surprises me is that the tobacco companies haven't come up with their own e-cigarettes. Perhaps they are just too pessimistic considering the defeats the Fed Gov have handed them thusfar. Ergo, the rest of the world beats us to it.

Don't fall for that trap. There is no such thing as a "small" tax. Cigarettes used to have a "small" tax and now the tax in some places is more than 100% the actual cost.

No, we can not be ok with any tax on ecigarettes. The government is a beast that gorges itself on tax money and no amount is ever enough.

i could not agree more, especially in the god awful state of new york. when i first started smoking, named branded cigarettes were about $4/pack. 10 years later they are over 10 bucks a pack MORE THAN DOUBLE. i pick up one of my co-workers on the way to work, he was complaining that a pack of newports cost him $10.80 because he did not have a chance to go to the res. the government is a legalized criminal organization that gorges itself by stealing money from the middle class. the government needs to be responsible with our money. a sin tax on something that is a harm reduction device(which is what an e cig is) simply does NOT make sense. the government should get out of our lives and leave well enough alone.
