Today I took apart an auto USB passthrough and inspected 2 other batteries.

1st model:
It seems that some are using some form of mechanical contraption to make a tiny contact that the microcontroller then uses to drive a mosfet transistor that powers the atty.
These could be cleaned of juice with some alcohol and a blunt syringe (at least in theory and with plenty of luck)

2nd model:
a 3mm microphone was used to sense the drag, the other parts looked the same (mosfet, general purpose transistor for charging and led connections)
The microcontroller was named ESMOKE on this model.
If the juice gets to the microphone, you can toss them away or use them for spare parts/connectors.

RIP! but without the connectors.

I like the battery mods, but don't care for manual batteries. I've been trying to think of a way to make a auto switch that would activate when I take a drag. I was hoping to come up with a idea to on how to make my own instead of using one taken out of my 801 battery. We wouldn't be so limited on size, so it should be possible and a larger size could be more durable then the tiny ones in the stock batteries. Anyone have any ideas?
