How come everyone but me has great success dry burning their coils clean. I use silica wicks in my devices I rebuild and the stock wicks in my others (I'm pretty sure this is silica too).

I try to use the dry burning method to clean my coils but about half the time it seems like all I do is burn the wick in half...Anyone know what the deal is? Y'all have any suggestions on what I might be doing wrong?

Seems odd your wicks are burning through, if that's what's happening. Silica wick will degrade over time and after a while pull apart, but for me that's usually after a month or so of use, with dry burns every three days or so. Could be the wick you're using is substandard, at what voltage do you dry burn? I usually do it somewhere between 3.3 and 3.7 volts, depending.

I know this may not be popular belief, but I see very little benefit in dry burning. I just take apart my clearo's and soak the parts in vodka for at least an hour (usually overnight) and then go back to vaping in the morning. I use a few EVODs and ProTanks, so if I'm washing more than one at the same time so the wicks can go in any of the devices. I don't notice any left over taste from the other juice. I do try and keep my tobacco flavors in two of my EVODs.

I noticed when dryburining, I would get a nasty taste for a few hits after so it seemed to do more harm than help.

I too soak my coils in vodka, or sometimes soaking them in very hot distilled water (changing out the water once or twice to keep the water hot), a bit of gentle q-tip wiping on the coil and I'm good to go. I dry burned a few times, but like SpinDr I got a funky taste, so soaking it my cleaning of choice.

I'm not familiar with EVODs so I have no idea if this is applicable, but...

When dry burning an atomizer you should always rinse it out with hot water BEFORE doing a dry burn.
And you should also rinse it out very well AFTER doing a dry burn.

The dry burn turns gunk that is baked onto the coil into ash, which you will then be vaping if you don't rinse it out afterwards.

I have several videos on my channel fulling detailing how to dry burn & cleaning different units. if you are pulsing for more then 3-5 seconds at a time you WILL pop the coil eventually. Watch a couple of them and you shouldnt burn anything! The silica shouldnt burn. Now not saying it can't but shouldn't. But you can pop the coil

My method for maintaining the coils of my Kanger inventory: Remove shaft, dump the flavor wicks, rinse in hot running water, remove excess gunk with small brush from a beard and mustache kit I had laying around, dab coil head with paper towel, dry burn on a fixed voltage eGo stick batt in 2 - 3 second bursts until wick is pure whie and coil glows bright orange right away. Replace flavor wicks (2 pieces of 1 mm silica).

I'm getting a month or more out of my Evod, PT & T3S coils by performing the maintenance every 2 or 3 fills OR if I get any kind of burnt hits. The ones that have 'gone bad' were shorts or coils that just wouldn't heat evenly even after adjusting with a pick. They go into the rebuild pile. The kicker is that I've found the heads perform better than new after doing the maintenance.

EDIT: I never had much luck dry burning CE non rebuildable top coil clearos. Probably the biggest thing that drove me to try the bcc's.

I used to dry burn coils all the time. Vivi Nova's, CE4's and eGo-C atties. The eGo-C are different, but the VN and CE4 are ordinary silica wicks. I have dry burned some at least 30 times. I am very aggressive with it, aiming to be just under the heat required to 'pop' (actually it's really melt) the coil. Takes me about 5 minutes to do one from start to finish. I start the dry burn with a wet wick (water and juice after a quick rinse) and don't bother to rinse again after.

I have occasionally bought clearos in which the wick would not take this treatment, so I know from experience this is possible. I never bought those again. I don't know for sure, but I'm pretty sure those were not using silica.

I never tried the Vodca soak as this works so well for me and it's way faster. Now I'm mostly into RBA's and that's a totally different ballgame.
