I'm sure someone more experienced than me will comment, but let me tell you what has worked for me. Normally I wash out the head really well, under hot water. Then, and I think this may be the key, pulse it. Don't just push the button and hope for the best. When I just held the button, I would get the same burned taste. But pulsing it seems to be a less harsher way, with no lingering problems. YMMV, of course, but this is what I've done, especially when I switch flavors.

How long did you dry burn? It is common for people to not thoroughly burn. How much did you make sure the wick is dry? I usually rinse the head after a dry burn and if it isn't fully dry I have to work the water out by vaping it.

The wicks do need to re-saturate but no longer than the amount of time for a new coil.

Pulse dry burn until you see...

(1) individual red coil wraps with
(2) no 'smoke' and
(3) sizzling.

Be cautious when dry burning. You can burn out the coil if you leave the power on too long. Remember to pulse on, then off for 3-4 seconds each. Adjust timing intervals as you gain 'experience'.

I didnt wash the wick under water...just dry burned and blew ash off of coil. Then refilled with juice. If i hold the button down for more than a couple seconds...i get a hot hit that tastes burnt and hurts my lungs and throat. Im using a mechanical and RSST at .8 Ohms

Sounds like a short to me. My Genisis is a AGA-T not a RSST. I'm assuming you're using SS mesh. I thought the insulated wick hole does not allow shorts to happen, but maybe they can still between the coils. In any case, if you syringe out the juice from the tank and keep the wick at the top you can burn off the juice that's in the wick. You will soon see if you have a hot spot. If you do, just eliminate it and you're good to go.

I wrap my coil around a drill bit which allows me to take the wick out and wash it.

Gotta rinse after dry burning. Some ashes may still be trapped in between the coils. Blowing will not get rid of them.

But I have no idea why the vape should taste hot and harsh after dry burning.

Yes, its important to look closely - light and magnification - because eventually the water rinse after dry burning may not be enough to get the coil/wick clean. With the juices I make, its seems I always need a needle or drill bit to truly get the "clinkers".
The wick in the coil area is especially hard to get clean and many of us soak in PGA or Vodka. But long before the coil is dead, usually, I cut the wick and pull it out, replacing it with cotton or bamboo - using a needle threader. No dry burning cotton or bamboo - just keep replacing.
