Got my DUD the other day and after a lot of messing around I was able to get all coils heating even, and no shorts.

My only issue is their is a metal taste to the vape? Also I seem to not be getting much vapor/flavor unless I crank the volts which gives me a burnt taste.

Coil reads 2.1 on my provari, running a #400 SS wick (not sure the size, started @ 70mm and trimmed a lot off later) and 32 gauge wire.

I have been running it from 3.6-4.2v

I do not have a torch and have been getting the wick bright red with a bic lighter. I'm starting to think that is not enough?

Should be alright, you don't have a gas stove I take it.

Petar K with his pre-roll the coil method doesn't really do any of the typical oxidizing stuff, just a quick swipe.

Try adding a bit of extra juice to the wick/coil and light it up (in flames) a few times and see if that helps. Just be careful to not overheat it.

I guess you know to keep the wick side down and tilt.

Glowing coil evenly without any e-liquid in tank is good but any glowing wire when e-liquid in tank is a short and will impart nasty taste.
Stove method works just fine to oxidize mesh , personally i keep in stove flame glowing for 15 seconds then water dip then pat dry and repeat 4-5 times then i put e-liquid on with syringe and back to stove just to light it and then remove until it burns itself out but no water quench.
We all have our little ways .
I also use 400 mesh and after oxidizing and doing dry fire i fill tank then i insert the wick thru the coil already on device naked and no longer than a minute the wick saturates itself (no tipping) and i fire several times to make sure there are no glowing wires what so ever.

Your coils could be shorting out regardless of whether or not there's juice in the tank, but if you are able to adjust them before the wick is soaked in eliquid, it actually makes finding smaller shorts harder later on. Of course, it's always best to adjust the coils to an even glow before putting liquid in the tank, so you have to look for different signs sometimes when you taste a short. Another sign that you might have a small or "soft" short is when you seem to be getting enough, or too much, of a throat hit, but flavor and vapor aren't coming through as much as they should (this could also be a wicking issue, but I've found that adjusting the coils works for that as well).

Sometimes, you won't see the coil glowing, but you will see some coils producing lots of vapor, while the others are doing nothing or just bubbling. Work the coils just below where they're producing vapor until the whole row of coils seems to be firing.

Working the coils is harder when they're wet, but lately I've gotten a better vape out of all of my devices by making small adjustments after the tank is already full and the coils were adjusted in the dry beforehand.

Oh, and get yourself a butane torch to oxidize your steel. Even a gas station crack lighter will work, but regular, non-torch-flame lighters don't burn clean enough and leave too much of a residue, because they don't get hot enough to vaporize all the nasty contaminants.

Picked up a torch today and made a new wick, seemed a lot better. I packed my stuff up and headed for the casino... on the way back it got really harsh and tasted like crap. The top coil was giving my a huge hotspot.

I kept the wick but redid the coil at a lower ohm (less coils to work with) and its working so-so atm.

I think one of my problems is I am not letting it season and build up some gunk on it.

Most of us have been through these same struggles. Stick with it. This video was a watershed moment for me. A game changer. The proverbial light bulb went on so to speak. You dont need to re-wrap it. You just need a lot of patience and it will work. Watch the vid closely and you will get it also. Good luck my friend.

EDIT: Just wanted to point out that if you dont have a VV device you may need to start with a mod with a mostly dead battery. That way it wont heat up too much while you fiddle. This applies to all Gennies, not just the one in the vid.

That is the main video I watch lol. TBH I think im getting shorts on the edge of the mesh. Next wick I might try to fold it under alittle to see if that helps.

Quick update, after a so-so taste and vapor production + my juice turned really dark I decided to take it apart and give it a soap bath. After I made a new coil 5/6 wrap reading 2.3ohm.

I think my last wick was not touching the wick and causing issues. New coil is working great. No shorts, great taste ect..

Thanks for dealing with all of the noob questions!
