E-cigs have been around now since 2004 in many places. It takes at least 8 years for a smokers lungs to heal themselves from smoking damage.

Are there any studies done on people's lungs that have been vaping for 8 years?

We all could use this info asap. vaping has been around long enough to be able to show significant improvements/harm or other changes.

We need this data. Can anyone help me find such data?

If it's not been done, can we get someone to do such a study?

I'm sure that studies are being done, but it will take time to actually do them. 8 years is not exactly long term so I'm sure any study will be "initial findings". I'd think that anything that would get a person off of inhaling burning cigarette smoke would have some beneficial aspects so I'm hopeful the studies will be positive. A lot of us will be interested in multiple studies done by various entities and you can bet that BT and BP will be involved.

The two X-Rays look quite similar to me, but I am not a medic with a trained eye.

What I do know is that the damage varies from person to person and that many people
wrongly believe that the lungs just heal themselves back to normal after quitting smoking.

I had a lung function check 20 months after I switched from tobacco to ecigs. It showed that
I had stopped damaging my lungs and that they were equivalent to the 'normal' lungs of a 76 year old, I was 55 at the time. I was told that they should now deteriorate at a near normal rate of a 76 year old.
I was also just 2 points off being classed as 'at serious risk of lung disease' and not to be surprised if
I suffered respiratory problems in the future, which I already have and still am.

The statement 'It takes at least 8 years for a smokers lungs to heal themselves from smoking damage' is very much a generalisation as there will inevitably be some permanent damage, the amount is dependent on a number of factors. I have put a link to just one article below to illustrate how different circumstances can affect smokers and ex-smokers.

It is obviously better to give up smoking, but giving up will not guarantee healing or immunity from
smoking related diseases and illnesses. That is the gamble we all took when we started smoking
and all we can do is try to mitigate the negative effects by adopting a healthier lifestyle, after
that it's fingers crossed.

Q: Does your body fully heal after quitting smoking?

Best wishes

John

Your body will never heal it self 100%.
at the first year-
1-you regain back your smell and taste.
2-you CO levels in your blood drop to normal.
3-you see a mild to moderate improvement in your lung function-via lung capacity.
4-you stop having morning coughs and sputum production on a regular basis.
5-your chance of having a heart attack drops by 50%
5-your body regenerate your protective cilia.
7-your skin color go pink.
8-you have a greater erection in sex.

by 10 years-
1-the chance of having lung cancer drops by 70% relative to a smoker (a smoker has almost 20% of having lung cancer),thus your chance is 14% where a non smokers chance is 1%.
2-your chance of heart attack is similar to life long non smokers
3-the chances of oral, throat , pancreatic, kidney and skin cancer are as the same of non smokers.

by 20 years-you remain only with a 1% chance of having lung cancer, for every decade you smoked. thus if you started at the age of 20,and smoked a pack/day for 30 years, you will have 3% of having lung cancer, that's still 300% more than a non smoker, but 85% less than if you would continue to smoke.

if stopped before being diagnosed with COPD-your chances for having it are the same as at the non-smoker public.
