OK I should've know better, but I was in a hurry and just grabbed a pile of stuff and rammed it in my pockets as I left.

Mini pipe was in my jacket pocket, but I had also grabbed a spare charged battery and stuck in my jeans too, and without thinking this was in the same pocket as some loose change and my lighter (yeah I still carry it, but I've had that one for years, its kind of like a security blanket), which happens to be metal.

Some hours later I'm standing in a shop and suddenly feel a rather hot sensation in my front right pocket and think
'Thats a bit warm?'

I reach in and pull out my lighter thinking I've inadvertadly started it. But its still cool?

However the heat in my pocket is now much higher and starts almost burning. I stick my hand in my pocket and OUCH! something burns me?

I dip in again and pull out one VERY HOT battery. It's so hot I almost drop the thing and have to quickly wrap it in some spare tissue I have in another pocket (comes from having a dog, I generally have some poo bags, dog biscuits and tissue in every jacket I own)

The battery is so hot I can't hold it with bare fingers and the heat shrink wrap on it has reduced to almost nothing, and I have to put it on a shelf in the shop to cool down.

All I can think of is the coins/lighter have managed to connetct both poles and it didn't like it.

Result? 1 Naffed battery, 1 nearly burnt right ball 8-o

Lesson learnt - don't do it again!
batteries do not belong in the same enclosure as other metal objects

How about posting a how to video. I'm 61 so the ability to have something hot in my pants on demand sounds pretty good to me. :D

*scraps the idea for the all copper battery carrying case*

lol!

I too have tried to be aware of what I'm putting where. We tend to forget these are batteries and heating elements we're playing with. Manual batteries, especially. Imagine having it in your pant pocket and somehow jogging the switch on- YOWCH.

Ok that made me nearly fall over laughing. The funny thing is, like most things that get you hot in the pants, eventually you get a kick to the bits and pieces!

You're lucky that battery didn't explode. I don't think those pipe batteries have protection circuit boards. Lithium ion batteries DO NOT LIKE SHORT CIRCUITS! Neither do balls! :D I had an old mod one with a slide on/off switch and left it on in my jacket pocket one day....hmmm.....I sent 4 MiMH batteries and one atomizer into thermonuclear overdrive.

Glad your pant's didn't catch on fire especially if the lighter would of combusted YOWWCH!!!!

Maybe a spring action slide would be a good idea.

Many thanks for all the sympathy :D

No, I didn't do a dance (just as well - me dancing could've caused more public concern than exploding pants) but the thought of the battery exploding did cross my mind (once I'd realised what the situation was) and I did put it on the shop shelf and back away a little while it cooled down.

Mind you, if that had happened I might've made the news. Especially as I was in a popular S/F shop in London's West End at the time!

Sources suggest an improvised device was used, consisting of a battery, butane lighter, and a quantity of small change added for impact damage . The individual is now being detained and claiming he was only looking at modifying a sonic screwdriver into an e-smoking device

In truth it only happened cos I was in a hurry and didn't stop to think. If I had, I would never have done something as stupid  Especially the lighter and battery combo, that could've been pretty nasty - and I was also pretty lucky (OK my right ball didn't think so) as normally I travel by bike (as in Triumph) and if that had happend while on that, things could've got very nasty indeed 8-o I think I will be looking a modding a case for my mini-pipe and spares this weekend.

For what? my mod, or his balls? :D
I've got safer mods now due to that incident.

Just recently got my 888 and I love it.

The thing that concerned me was that the cover was VERY sloppy and would indeed come off in my pocket.

Solution turned out to be pretty simple and easy!

Took off the battery cover and removed the battery and dug out a pair of needle nosed pliers. The cover tabs and the ones in the bowl looked either too flimsy to be bending on or requiring more disassembly than I wanted to do.

Sooo, I reached down into the bowl with the pliers and pulled up on the spring CAREFULLY and SLOWLY until I had it stretched out enough to put enough pressure on the battery to make the cover pretty solid. Stretch the spring out some and try it, repeat until you get it to a point where the cover is comfortably solid.

Don't yank hard on the spring, I'm pretty sure you could damage it to the point where a major disassembly / fix would be required or effectively trash the pipe.

Worked out nicely but it might need to be repeated at some interval, waiting to see now.

Hope this helps!

always out them in something plastic or none conductive.. never mix them with other metal objects.. loose change and keys being a lethal mix..

i have had one explode in my pocket.. a stupid trick and i should (do) know better.. but i still managed to do it..

be warned.. something worse might happen to your balls than simply getting warm... he he

Can't you also cause a problem if you put the battery in the wrong way? Doesn't it heat up and ruin the atomizer or something? Or am I thinking of something else?

Well the LED in whatever device you have is a reverse biased Light Emitting Diode, so if you forward bias it (putting the batt in backwards), it is essentially a short circuit until it fries. Short circuit = HEAT.
