Chemically speaking, anything ending in -ol is going to be an "alcohol." Artificial sugars, propylene glycol, glycerol... are all "alcohols". The alcohol your dad needs to watch for is ethyl or ethanol. (Ethyl being a natural gas product and ethanol being a starch product i.e. corn or wheat, etc). All this means is that the structure of the molecule is a series of carbon and hydrogen i.e.:

Propylene glycol is basically a composition derived from the combination of propanol and glycerol. The vegetable "glycerin" we know of is just the complex alcohol composition of glycerol. This can be related to oxygen i.e. O1 (elemental oxygen), 02 (oxygen gas), or 03 (ozone). Same stuff, more complex composition.

Even if a cartridge did contain ethanol, a full cartridge only contains 1ml (penstyle), .5 ml (mini), or .25 ml (super mini). So, even if your dad was to consume an entire cartridge in a sitting, he would not be able to discern any alcohol taste or feel. (As an example, typical moutwash contains 10-20% alcohol. This would mean that in the 15-20ml gulp you use to wash your mouth would contain as much as 2ml of alcohol... double the full capacity of the largest cartridge.)

Hope this helps."

This is a post made by a member from a couple of years ago. From this I can see that PG & VG are in fact alcohol!

Does anyone think it can be done with these ingrediants?

While classified as an alcohol, chemically, they are not intoxicants, like ethanol. Your liver produces retinol (sic?), an alcohol, whichout which you cannot function properly. Also as pointed out, plant and animal fats have alcohol components.

You will want to check with your religious leader(s) about non-intoxicating alcohols that are contained in nearly every food, grooming product, and produced by your own organs. While chemically called alcohols, they are not generally considered by most folks to be alcohol.

Just like most folks consider salt to be sodium chloride, there are many substances that are called salts by chemist, but would not have nearly the same effect on your food let alone taste. So, when most folks say "salt" they mean sodium chloride and when most folks say "alcohol" they mean ethanol.

PG and VG are Halal. I saw them on a list. They don't have the kind of alcohol that intoxicates. Many sugars are alcohols but it's just the layout of their molecules.

However some pre-made juices do have real alcohol in them especially juices with high VG content (alcohol may be used to thin them). Just find a decent juice vendor who actually makes their juices onsite and ask them which of their juices have alcohol - it may be that none have alcohol unless the flavoring has alcohol.

Flavoring - some flavorings are crystals or oils that REQUIRE alcohol to dilute and they are sold as flavorings with alcohol already in them. Menthol is crystals. Ethyl Maltol is crystals (cotton candy flavoring and used as a sweetener in some dessert liquids and possibly in RY4 or 555 tobaccos). Most citrus and nut flavors and many spice flavors are oil based and need to be mixed with alcohol to be dissolved in PG.

So if you don't want alcohol you not only need to find a vendor that does not use alcohol to thin (or make juices yourself) but ALSO avoid all flavoring that contain alcohol.
