Liz that seems to be the trouble I`m seeing with this mod it is tin and will dent easy. The thing I have though is it will scratch easy as well. Found that out on my first scrap box the one I tried to mod the lid on. That came out a ugly lid by the way and not a good mod move.
But with the one I got the Flatter switch on I`m not liking the way it looks but think I will if I can get the tin metal to show with no paint. I will be playing with that to see how easy it actually does come off now.

You might need to coat the outside of the tin with something clear. What I don't know, but it would save the finish. Thinking a clear coat of polyurethane like I've used on furniture and finished painted metal. There are also some clear coatings at places like Michael's that are less flammable (and no noxious vapors). That clear Plasti-Dip might be perfect!

My 18650 is WAY too short to fill my eclipse tin. I have an Ultrafire "BRC 18650 3000mAh, 3.7V" where the button is nearly flush with the top. Would have to build something up in the bottom of the tin to have it make contact with the lid. Either my tin is longer or my battery is shorter than yours. This was an old "Chuck" battery, before I got a couple of RCR 123a's to amp it up. It still doesn't come up to box-mod standards for kick.

I'm still using cartomizers--my first one opened is still going strong after more than two weeks. Afraid to attach it to my Chuck since it blew so many 510 attys (they have been tucked neatly into your package). It blew out a 901 as well. Cartos and 5v box-mods seem to work very well together.

There's an enormous fly that is crawling around on my monitor. I try not to kill, but this critter is tempting me...

Hey Liz,
I was thinking the same thing. A clear coat of some sort. And I`m going to post another picture of the 18650 on top of this tin. You will understand then.
My tin measures approximately 3" long outer edge to outer edge inside 2 and almost 3/4" the lid may take a tad more room then I think though. My battery measures just under 2 3/4' see what I mean no room.
Now with that fly.
You must be one of the kindest hearted person I know. I try not to kill everything but these fire ants are not included in that deal anymore.

I read somewhere that they are only referred to as "tins", they are actually
made of stainless steel. Still thin and easily dented, though

Urr yea that`s what I meant. You know it seems I`ve had this conversation somewhere before. Wonder if I went through all my old post if you or someone else didn`t set me straight on that once before?

While I`m posting again I want to mention although the battery/atty connector is grounded by the tin box I wasn`t happy with it so I did run a ground wire to the threaded base of the switch for additional ground back up. The tin is thin and Once the atty connector was pushed in it was loose so I used Quick Steel and stuffed it on the inside for support and strength.

Ok just so it`s known all 18650`s are not the same although they should be or the 18650 shouldn`t be 18650. 18 is the width(fatness) and 65 would be the length you can add 2 mm for the total length being a protected battery. Or at least this is what I`ve read here and there on the forum. So the 0 stands for nothing. :?:

Sci I`m sorry I think I never answered your question on this switch in the bottom picture or maybe I did. But actually that box is not wired up yet. I wanted to see how the switch looked on it first. Think it looks ok with the stainless steel showing better now so it will get wired up soon. :)

Here I took the paint off the side of the tin to see how this flatter button looks. I like it better. What do you think? That paint may get a scratch easy but I`ll tell you it is stuck on there very well.

Connman, that flat switch looks good without the paint. If that blue switch had a blue or black base, that would really look good on that blue tin.:) I've got some time today, I'm going to mess around with these tins. I like the size of them. If they were just a little deeper, I could stack 2 of those camera batteries I use in there.:)

They make heavy-duty shrink tubing that would fit around the outside of the tin. It would probably be easier, faster, less messy, and more easily replaceable than any coating I can think of. It would be less durable, though.

That's a pretty good idea. I saw, somewhere in here, where someone covered a copper, I think, with shrink wrap & it looked pretty good. Plus, I think that shrink wrap would be easier to paint if you wanted colors.

Haha, I was looking to see what colors shrink tubing comes in (lots, even glow-in-the-dark) when I found this "shrink FABRIC", it's like a "cozy" for your PV!

Shrinkflex 2:1 Fabric Heat Shrink Tubing

Nice find quasimod,
Tossing that in my saved interesting wanted folder.
I wish that came in larger sizes. Seems the braided is only up to 1 1/2" and the Glow in the dark is only 3/4". Still I could enjoy playing around with some of that on my smaller tube type mods like the Charger Tundra. Glow in the dark is cool stuff let alone just some of the colors.

I also see they have a conductive type which could be nice to have around.
Now I think some of that neon and glow in the dark in those sizes would be sweet in a Glass mod like we were talking with Liz on.

Connman- did I miss the link to the magnets you used? I've seen them but never sure what size to get.

Hello storminyte,
Actually I never mentioned the link. Got these at Wal-Mart in the crafts section. They have some good magnets there. The larger round ones are good or like I used these are square longer style magnets. I have both and both would work fine. :)

I like the larger round ones from there for charging my smaller battery in the charger since it won`t reach the contacts otherwise.

Hey Connman, finally got one together with the board in it. I like these tins.:) A little hard to work with & keep looking pristine, but worth it. I used a pair of needle nose & the lid off of a battery box to flatten(sorta) the lip so the battery would fit. I did the front & back. The lip doesn't look so great, but it didn't mess up the tin too much. I also added some solder to the middle of the front so the lid would catch & stay.
I found out something else. I had something out of a flashlight, some sorta 1/2" or so ring. i put a run of copper tape from top to bottom & it's the perfect adapter for using an 18500 with this. Works great.:)
I'm glad you posted this, I've been looking for something this size to put an 18650 or 18500 in. Thanks!

Say, that seems to be similar in size to a tin I have, Jones Soda Candy Jones Pure Cane Soda Products: Welcome to Jones Soda . Neat mod! I don't mod, but I think that is really cool. One more way eCigs are green. :)

Hello lilith79,
Thanks so much for tossing that tin in here. I like it and yes it seems very similar. The way the Lid closes and all.
I was wondering if you happen to read this if it has raised lettering on it. One side of the mints tin does and at the same time I like it I would like to have a tin that didn`t to paint and that one could be the one.

Sorry I didn`t respond to your post earlier I actually missed it some how.

Sounds good Sci so that baby is running 5 volts then? Cool idea love 5 volt. I am running the LR atty on this one. And I love it. Feels great in the hand with good weight and all. Nice you found a way to use another battery as well as the 18650.
And I also had to smash both sides of the tins lip to get the battery to enter. I think over all hardly shows any damage from doing this.
I also then stuck a piece of copper pipe the same size as the battery in and pinched the center back in slightly which gives it a good snap shut on the lid. I like that solder to it idea might look into that as well.

Was this a Blue tin you used? I`m going to watch for a red one at the stores here.

It's hitting 4.99v.:) I've got a LR 510, but it runs out of juice way to quick for me. Guess I've gotten spoiled by the cartos. I'll use my 401 sometimes, but mostly it's cartos. I want to try the 510 LR cartos & see how they last.

I have those switches with green buttons on them, had to go with the green tin.:) The one on the left is the 'red' one.
EclipseMints.jpg

I've got those 3 & a purple(winterfrost) one. I just saw that they've got orange & blueberry also..

I epoxied the connector on, I guess it should be sitting on the desk curing, but I wanted to try it out. I let it sit a couple of hours.

Aw what the heck...
4677927392_1752286591_b.jpg

You can see where I put some solder on the lip. I soldered the grounds to the lid, I'll move them inside later. I used some double sided tape & a piece of foam with a piece of foil tape on the other end for the +. I used a thicker piece of foam & the DS tape to attach the board to the side. I've also got a little bit of solder under the foil tape on the lid to make it stick out enough to make contact.

Yeah, I guess I should have put the atty & switch on the other side, but I'm left handed. I do a lot of stuff bass-ackwards.:)

Once again, great find on this! Thanks for posting it!:toast:

Oh no I want one of each color now. This is getting bad.
I like that switch you used Sci. And the Green tin.
Green is actually my favorite color.
Thanks for the pictures. :toast:

I love the great way the mod came out. Very happy so many people responded and that`s why I make mods and post them. It helps my sickness Icantstopmoddingitis.
