yepper, I've even went with 3.5mm but thats when it starts getting tight (but works)

I clip it off very close also, I don't even worry about ANY sticking out, just as long as it plugs the hole...

the inside of the air tube (bell inside the tank) is where you can get flow restriction
if you cram TOO MUCH wick into that 'bell' it doesn't allow as much absorbtion, as one would like - IMO

I've tried to switch over to short fat, from long skinny for wicking configuration...

It can be...challenging. That's why most of us leave the mandrel on the coil while reinstalling the plug and grommet.
I still say that it's not as bad as trying to capture the leads on the KF Mini v3.

IMO, the KF is a bit more fiddly than rebuilding a GS Air coil.

Rumor is, Nanny has a fort built of coil boxes deep in the forests of Michigan.
My last order of coils allowed me to add a second story to my cardboard fort.

Now that I'm finally back from a week up North, it's time for me to tackle a rebuild on the coil.
We had the mail held for a week, but the mesh was there, and tomorrow, I will make my first attempt.....oh please, please let it work!!!
I'll have to go back and re-read a few posts, and actually, have saved them, so if I run into any problems, I'll study them and the video again.
Wish me luck!!! :)

I ordered some 29 gauge kanthal and a sheet of 400 SS mesh. Will go to Sally's for some rayon. Have assorted scissors, nail clippers and mini screwdrivers.

I have a bunch of working Air-Ms to pry the cap off, but nothing to screw the coil into to stabilize it.

Is there a "machine bolt" I can buy and secure to a piece of wood or something?

Note: I have never built a coil and am having issues even re-wicking a subtank OCC coil (3 x RBA Plus in the mail).
