Ok, it looks like my first Airhead coil rebuilds are around the corner. I'll be doing one factory wound and one another member rebuilt.

Is there any reason if the actual coil is in decent shape that I Shouldn't just dry burn it clean and rewick/rewrapped with
fresh wick/wrap? I rewick my Evod coils all the time with cotton, still keeping the actual coil wrap from before, but dry burned
clean.

Bruce, if I've rebuilt the coil I treat it like I did protank coils. I take off the nasty wrap, take out the nasty wicking, dry burn the coil and re wick, then rewrap. I don't see the point in throwing out a perfectly good coil.

I tried dry burning with limited success on these coils, but I did not remove the cap and liner...
interested to see how it goes.

Today I found out the hard way about checking to make sure your wrap goes all the way around the coil and overlaps a bit. I did a marathon rebuilding session on Saturday. Rebuilt close to 30 coils. Anyway, grabbed one out of the cup this morning, screwed it in the head and filled the tank. I did notice that every time I used it I got liquid on my hands. So imagine my surprise when I pulled it out of my pocket and got a dry hit. Looked at the tank and it was completely empty. My pocket was full of liquid though. When I looked at the coil, i could see a bare spot. Yikes!! It's all fixed now though! Lol

50/50.. One of the holes on the cap had no wrap on it whatsoever.

Just FYI re: Cheech's cap removal trick.

If you don't have a building stand like Cheech uses in his video, you can use an old Evod (eVod?) tank base and an ego battery (or probably with any ego-threaded device, for that matter). Screw the coil firmly into the Evod base, screw the base onto the ego battery, then use the inverted Air M tank like Cheech does in his video.

Too bad the coil doesn't make contact with the positive pin on the battery, though. If it did, you could check the resistance of the coil after it's rebuilt.

I've gone to putting the wrap inside the cap with just a bit of the bottom edge sticking out and run a pin around in there to push it against the wall tightly....then put it on the coil. I haven't messed one up since, but it may not work for you.

I gotta try that. That makes perfect sense. If the material you use for the surround has any tension to it, it should spring outward towards the wall of the cap.

Either way you wrap it, you have to cut your tampon de gaza to fit pretty close.

You must trim your wicks pretty close to the coil?
Every time I tried putting the gauze in the cap, it would catch on the wick material...

I trim them almost flush and soak them. Then kinda tuck them in a little so they stay out of the way long enough to slip the cap on.

Just tried Bike's method. Haven't tried using the coil yet, but I think it will work just fine.

Rebuilt a new coil, so I recycled the original cotton (?) surround - which turns out to be two layers of cotton (or cotton-like) material not unlike the surface of a pad of Japanese cotton. Trimmed my wicks as close to the slot as possible using a pair of mini vertical wire (I assume) pliers that I think are called "nippers". The nippers compress the cut edge of the wick a bit, so I separated the strands using a sewing pin and lightly blowing on the ends.

Put the surround in the cap and - after making sure that the wicks were away from the thickest part of the surround - the cap went on without a hitch. No worries about the width of the surround after I realized that it just has to be wide enough to cover the slots - not necessarily the entire depth of the cap.

Maybe the gauze doesn't have as much surface tension? I'll have to try it with the Japanese cotton surface material, but I think it should work with that too.
