I doubt that very much as alcohol is used extensively in cosmetic items such as astringent toners to make it dry on the skin quickly. I would think putting alcohol in a cartridge would dry it out rapidly as soon as it contacts with the atomiser.

Probably another scare tactic by the anti-everythings.

On a lighter note, I'm not much of a drinker, but if I was going to enjoy a fine wine, I'd much rather drink it than smoke it:p

What is the cause of alarm here? Go the Health New Zealand, where lab tests have been done on e-liquids, and you'll find that the liquid is 5% alcohol. Whoopee. In the amount a user inhales as a wisp of vapor, this 5% is utterly meaningless. Alcohol helps the liquid in many ways; I even add some to homebrew tobacco liquid. No one will get drunk. No one need confess a sin to AA. Besides, like nicotine, alcohol in small amounts is beneficial to our health.

That's very interesting. Didn't know PG was classed as alcohol. Learn something new every day:)

Talking of alcohol, was at my friend's house last night. We go there every fortnight as it's a 50 mile journey. We meet there with other friends from that area (we're hoping to move there eventually). She has a non-smoking house but her husband smokes. He goes outside for a cig. He bought an e-cig last week and loves it:D

While we were there my friend brought out a bottle of home-brewed wine and I had a glass of it. It was really nice. Think it might have been Elderberry. I wasn't driving (hubby had volunteered) so it was really nice to sit with a glass of wine and "smoke".

A very pleasant evening was had by all:D

Don't sweat the alcohol in e-liquid. But propylene glycol itself might -- might -- be a concern. Note this Wiki entry:

If propylene glycol is in your system the last thing you would have to worry about is drug screening. Even at low dosages this chemical can kill. There are several documented cases of people ingesting propylene glycol and in most the ones who have ingested it either became very ill or died.

Or this:

Propylene Glycol
Works as a humectant, moisture carrier, derived from petroleum. In industry it is used in antifreeze and hydraulic brake fluid. A strong skin irritant and thought to cause liver abnormalities and kidney damage.

Before e-smoking becomes mainstream, we need public assurance that long-term inhalation of this vapor cocktail won't cause serious health problems. Long ago, no one knew the consequences of smoking cigarettes. Now we know. E-smoking is at its beginning. We know nothing of long-term consequences.

yep scary stuff tb. i'm just hoping we are not getting enough amounts to do us harm.
you and naz were experimenting with veggie glycerine . how did that turn out? do you think it's safer or do you use a combo type mix?

I continue to e-smoke, feeling, like most everyone, that this is far healthier than tobacco smoking. Life presents us a series of odds, doesn't it. Odds are this is safer. Not guaranteed safe. But safer.

Yes, I use vegetable glycerine, often mixed with homebrew tobacco juice and Bickford Kahlua flavor. I really like that combo. Glycerine would seem safer to me than propylene glycol. It has the same vapor properties, but is fully ingestible and tastes delicious. But no one has studied inhaling it!

So we do what we choose to do, with knowledge that there are many hazards in our daily existence. E-smoking doesn't cause me worry. But I would like a little scientific assurance that I've made the right choice. I hope the Ruyan-funded studies in New Zealand will continue to uncover good news for us.

Propylene Glycol.... antifreeze.....

We know nothing of long-term consequences.
Agreed, we don't know long-term... not trying to argue that this is all safe.

To avoid any lurker hysteria over OMG ANTIFREEZE!! 8-o, which we've discussed in the past, I'll remind that this is not the same as Ethylene glycol

Ethylene glycol
Ethylene glycol solutions became available in 1926 and were marketed as "permanent antifreeze", since the higher boiling points provided advantages for summertime use as well as during cold weather. They are still used today. Ethylene glycol antifreezes are poisonous and should be kept away from any person or animal that might be tempted by its sweet taste.

Propylene glycol
Propylene glycol, on the other hand, is considerably less toxic and may be labeled as "non-toxic antifreeze". It is used as antifreeze where ethylene glycol would be inappropriate, such as in food-processing systems or in water pipes in homes, as well as numerous other settings. It is also used in food, medicines, and cosmetics, often as a binding agent. Propylene glycol is "generally recognized as safe" by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in food.

I gotcha ... but no one has proposed inhaling ethylene glycol. I suppose I am being argumentative, but let's just talk propylene glycol safety, if that's an issue at all. It sure is for me.

PG is used in antifreeze. That doesn't bother me one iota. PG has lots of uses. What bothers me are warnings on inhaling it or getting mist in the eyes. Those precautions signal possible danger or hazard. If that's so, then e-smoking might not be completely safe.

I've concluded we e-smoking pioneers are New Age Faith-based Believers worshiping at the First United E-Church, Rev. J. Kissbox presiding.

Well, it's down to either inhaling carbon monoxide or antifreeze. Hmm.
Damn that antifreeze sure tastes good.

I do have to add this though. PG antifreeze is marketed as one that does not kill your pets. Because of the sweet taste of EG antifreeze, many a stray kitty cat has bit the dust after drinking it. Protect Your Pets With Safer Formula Antifreeze
If kitty cats don't drop dead after lapping up a puddle full, then I'm not overly concerned about vaping a little bit at a time.....for now.

Of course we don't know what the long term effect is, but I'd rather inhale this crap than the crap I used to inhale.

Just throwing that out there. I'm kinda bored right now so I'm just talking out my .....

Happy vapin'. :D

I don't mean to be a buzz kill, but I think there is a big difference between saying that ingesting a little bit of PG isn't harmful and believeing that inhaling a bit isn't harmful. PG is great for less toxic anti-freeze and it's fairly easy to prove that it really is safer as far as anti-freeze is concerned since you don't die when you ingest a bit of it. I know that PG is in my mouth wash (biotene) as well as almost all the snus I have bought. That doesn't have anything to do with wether or not its safe to smoke. stonewalls are made with tobacco and putting them in your mouth is fairly safe, I would not however suggest placing them in a pipe and free basing them like crack. we have to ingest water to survive, however inhaling the stuff can kill you. Our lungs are fragil, far more so than our stomachs which are full of acid. There are lots of things I can ingest that I wouldn't dare smoke, sugar for example. Just be careful that your not letting your adiction to smoking effect your judgement of how safe e-smoking is. I think the best way of looking at it that I've seen is simply to acknowledge that smoking is wicked freaking aweful for you and that e-smoking is probably no worse and potentialy less harmful. Just my opinion

I'm one of these people who, if I like something, will do it anyway regardless of any potential risks.

There's an element of risk in everything we do. It would be a boring life without risk.

That's why I still smoke tobacco cigarettes as well as the e-cig. I like them both. Of the former, I know the possible risks but the enjoyment outweighs the risks. The latter is, for the most part, an unknown quantity but bypasses the iniquitous smoking ban our government forced on us last year, so risks or no risks I'll carry on e-cigging as well as baccy cigging:D

If we were to analyse everything we put into our bodies in one form or another, we'd end up dead through stress and worry.

Take that well-known artificial sweetener for example, Aspartame. It's present in nearly every soft drink and commercially produced food, yet the health risks of that are very serious indeed. Just Google Aspartame side-effects and you'll find a list longer than your arm - some very serious risks too, yet people don't think twice about putting that particular nasty poison in their bodies.

Whichever way you look at it, one thing is for certain, one day we are all going to kick the bucket.

Remember:

The only cause of death is by being born!

So nobody is a buzzkill. We all agree that we do not know whether it's lethal or not.

The deal is, we DON'T know. Does that mean you are going to continue to e-vape or not?

I merely said PG antifreeze ain't killin' no cats yet. And I'd rather vape this crap than the other crap.

Like cigarettes with all the warning labels, people still smoke 'em.

We ain't got diddly on the health concern of this little beauty...only educated guesses and speculation...but we're still vapin' 'em.

Happy vapin'.
