Don't over think it. Its just a matter of practice. Make sure your ss mesh wick is well oxidized. Thats the biggest thing

A well oxidized wick is not really needed, you can have no oxidation at all before firing the coil for the first time. By doing this, you'd let the coil itself oxidize the wick while PULSING the firing button. this has what i've been doing and no longer find any need for my torches and gas stoves.

Oh and also I've seen people use washers, springs, and such for the positive post. What size would I need to fit this?

I bought some #6 lock washers from Lowes the other day but they seem too big... not enought material between the inside of the hole to the edge of the washer. But today, I noticed there was a brass screw/washer section down the isle, and they had brass washers #4s. I haven't put them on yet, but eye-balling it, they seem perfect. For the spring, I've heard the one in a pen works after resizing it.

Shouldn't light up immediately if the wick it's fully saturated and wet. With a good coil it shouldn't glow red for some time until it starts to get dry. I never timed it but at least 5 seconds with the cap off?

Make sure the coil is completely touching the wick, no air gaps but not too tightly wrapped. Hand wrap those coils or use the drill bit method. Pulse method to rid the hotspots and nudge those coils up or down to optimize the coils.

Ribbon kanthal wraps like a belt. I'm hooked on this.

This picture confuses me. It looks like the wraps of the wire are hitting each other. Isn't that a major no-no, because it causes shorts?

Oh, and what kind of washers are those that you are using and what size are they, please?

Drip some eliquid onto the coil and take a hit and see if the burnt taste is still there. If it tastes normal and not burnt you might have a problem with your coil(too tight, possible gaps etc)

I can go five seconds without it glowing red, so i think my hotspots are gone now. I just wish the taste would hurry and improve, seems almost like a burnt taste. I picked a bad juice for the first tank I guess because it's nearly unvapeable.
