I've been wanting a box style mod and have so far found 5 that seem to be possibilities:
iTaste MVP
Gripper
Smoktech Groove
sigelei TMax
sigelei V8

I'm still a newb, my most advanced piece of gear at this point is a Vision Spinner. My questions are: Is VW a significant enough feature over VV? Is plastic vs metal construction have any effect other than durability? Anything I should think about to help me determine which one? Am I missing a great box mod that should be on my list?

Thanks

I had a few plastic boxes that were okay. I fell in love when I got the metal REO. They are pricey, but indestructible and come with the best warranty in the business. You buy it once and never have to worry again. I figure it cost me the same as a few cartons, but has lasted me much longer. It is a bottom feeder, which means every hit is fresh not like the tanks with a carto, or clearos with the wicks in the juice.

As for Sigelei, 2 out of 3 PV's from them had QC issues. The VV Gripper works okay, but the bottom door where you place the battery is notorious for breaking. The smooth has a permanent battery inside.

Although a little on the expensive side, a REO is probably the most "newb" friendly box mod. I have a REO Mini and I've loved it since day 1. All you have to learn is how to properly sqounk and that'll take about 5 minutes. :)

Forgive the newbishness but, Sqounk?

I have a VV Gripper. It is an OK mod especially for the price. As vsummer1 mentioned the battery door is a bit weak, but if you are careful it should be OK. I have had mine for 1.5 months and it is intact. The 510 connection on mine is wobbly as well.

VW is a nice feature and I use it on my eVic, but don't really miss it on my Gripper. I am waiting for reviews on the Tmax, that looks like it could be a real winner. If it is even decent I will have one.

I have a REO in my future, as a matter of fact I was planning to buy one recently but decided to go for a GG knockoff for the time being, and a igo-L RBA. Maybe a genesis style atty in the near future. I just need a change :)

Ive had the MVP for about 3 or 4 months now and it's been great. You really can't say that about too many china made mods. If you use one as your primary vape or a couple of months most china PV's crap out. My MPV is showing now signs of slowing down.

As for VW vs. VV, IMO it's a gimmick. I played with it for a while on my vamo, but now I never use it. I know what it's supposed to do, but you really can't just set it and forget it. Try going from a 2 ohm carto to a 2.4 ohm dual coil and you'll know what I'm talking about. The dual coils need more juice to them to really shine.

I'm looking at the Reo's but the VV versions are definitely out of my price range for now :(

I don't use the VV, I just bought a kick and occasionally will kick my mechanical, but since I use the RDA's I just coil mine to my personal preference. When you use atties or cartos, you don't need VV or VW. It only comes in handy if you are constantly changing your juice delivery system, and I don't do that anymore.

Once you figure out what you like best, you kind of stick with it. I hope you find a set up that makes you happy without having to buy a lot of different ones like I did (the cheap boxes are now broken, I have one from madvapes and the VV Gripper ). ETA: and I never even took them out of the house! I always took my ProVari and now it is the stealthy and dependable REO that goes out.

I am just trying to save you the time and money in the long run.

I have a VV Gripper, 2 Ovale V8's, and just sold the iTaste MVP. The MVP is a great, solid device, but it didn't have the ohm checker. The Ovale V8 is OK. I have a version that checks ohms and one that doesn't. The batteries are a PITA to get in as the space is tight and the springs are industrial strength strong. The VV Gripper is my favorite, but as others have noted, quality is an issue, especially with the battery door. I needed to pry it open and reattach the wire to the metal plate on the battery door. I still use it every day.
