Matt, thank you for another beautiful piece!! Presenting Curly Eucalyptus Dragon with a Fancy Blackrose stem that I bent tonight, outfitted with a Short DID filled with Dragons Fire from HHV.

I had a pipe-related question and I figured where better to ask then here. I have been having issues with gurgly cartos that I can't seem to find a remedy to. I am using xl smoktek 1.7 ohm single coils in a locking DCT (UDCT?) and it would seem that no matter what I do I can't prevent gurgling. I have used regular size smoktek 1.7's in other tanks and they don't seem to go to hell like these xl's in the DCT. I have tried every possible combination of number, size and location of holes and I am baffled.

I couldn't think of any reason this might be happening until tonight when a thought occured to me: I am using a six inch churchwarden stem and what I'm picturing here is a sort of terrarium effect were the condensation builds up in the mouth piece and drips back down onto the carto, entering the air path. This is nothing more then a "best guess" at this point.

So maybe I'm off base here, or maybe smoktek 1.7's aren't the way to go, I don't know. I would sure appreciate any input from the experts, cause this is a bit of a pain. Thanks in advance.

From the sounds of it, your cartos are flooding. I doubt it would have anything to do with the stem. My experience with the Smoktech's is pretty much the same. As the tank gets emptier, they are more prone to flooding due to excessive pressure building up in the tank. Keeping the tank relatively full would help to reduce some of that happening.

That being said, got a couple of questions for you.

What juice do you use? PG/VG ratio..

What method of slotting/tapping/punching etc do you use for the carto?

How hard of a draw do you have when taking a hit?

I'm using Matt's pipe sauce (LBL if that is relevant), which I believe is 95% VG. I use the Kir Fanis carto punch, and have punched the holes to different depths (not to mention quantities and locations) in several experiments. I would say I generally take long relaxed draws.

How long do you use the carto for? I've found the ST 1.7 XL's to start to degrade around 3 days in. That's when they start to flood as the juice level gets lower. I usually slit my cartos, so more prone to flooding anyway. But, I would think with a 2 small hole setup, you should be fine.

Well, mine tend to hold out for about 3 days-ish. But I just popped a brand new one in about six hours ago and have been having gurgling issues off and on already. The tank is as full as I can get it through the fill port Romaniac at Jazzcartopipe installed in the tank.

Got me stumped.. hopefully someone else can think of something else.

I think Dusty nailed it on the carto tank. Smok carto's are getting worse and worse in quality, hard to believe since they were never very good to begin with. I'll probably be looking at getting carto's elsewhere in the future.
But the really sad truth is, for some people, like myself, carto tanks never work correctly.
Other people swear by them, but I have rarely been able to get a full tank to wick and, flow and taste right all the way through to empty.

If I were you I'd get a killer. I have run through around 12 tanks full of juice with it and the flavor, draw , and flow are unbeatable.
I will say though, even the killer gets a bit gurgly towards the end of a tank.

Funny you say that, I actually do have a Killer on the way as we speak. I just need to find an appropriate tank to put it in and use on my pipe, hopefully something that looks as good as that gun-metal locking DCT. I'm open to suggestions on that one, until then, the Killer will likely find it's home in my Kir Fanis Prive "Special" tank.

From what I've heard, you can't really use the Prive or Prive Special with the Killer. Something to do with not being able to adjust the flow control or something.

I've been eyeing the slim eGo DCTs for a while now. Problem is, all my cartos are the shorter 35mm length. Anyone know if a CV Universal will fit far enough into the tank to make up for the shorter carto? I tried sliding a tank up on one and it looks like about a cm is left at the bottom, but I don't have anything to make a precise measurement...
