Anyone had their TI chip die, or am I the first?

If is about ptn4050C, that module is not protected to short-circuit and at first damage atty.....

from the datasheet of the 04050c:
(1) Operation at no load is not recommended.
(4) Boost-topology switching regulators are not short-circuit protected.
Overtemperature Protection
A thermal shutdown mechanism protects the module's internal circuitry against excessively high temperatures. A
rise in temperature may be the result of a drop in airflow, a high ambient temperature, or a sustained overcurrent
condition. If the junction temperature of the internal control IC rises excessively, the module turns its boost
operation off. Although the module is off, an output voltage of approximately (VI – 300 mV) is still present. The
module restarts boost operation when the sensed temperature decreases by approximately 10 degrees.
I had them safely cut out if I used an atty 1.4 ohms or less. And did not damage the converter. Maybe I was lucky or maybe the Thermal Protection kicked in.
Correction:
Just re-read thermal shutdown. Guess my shutdown was not thermal because I had Zero output and according to the spec, it should have been (battery voltage - 300mV)

4050c with a 2 ohm atty in use. I'm not sure what made it stop working. It lasted about a year though. A dual coil carto killed my everhot so I'm without any VV at the moment.

A year... hmmm check your atty's battery connector for a compressed insulator. A year of screwing may have done it in.
If you put a resistor in parallel with your pot, it will make adjustment highly unlinear. It will be more sensitive at certain positions that others. You should put a resistor in series with the pot to set the ouput on the low stop and use a pot with the preferred value to adjust the limit on the top stop.
You can get an inductor hot enough to stop conducting. It's just a ferrous core wrapped in magnet wire. Wire resistance goes up as heat increases. That could be what happened. They just put a really tough inductor on that booster. Surprised the battery didn't show signs of over-stress as well. Of course, there should be a fuse inline anyway so that should have been what shut down output. The data sheet even tells you to add a fuse.

Was just finishing up my first "finished" evercool ptr08060 box mod when I realized that the pair of 200ohm thumbwheel potentiometers I got in the classies weren't that. One was a 10k 
. Unfortunately the other one went to a friend on a prebuilt circuit I made like the one on the first post. It's a 2x aw imr 18500 with voltage meter packed into a 4x2x1 project box that I've been working a little on here and there for about a month. This order cant come soon enough as my darwin is going out for repairs now 
Cant wait to post the finished product, this thing is soo packed in. A lot of dry fitting and cutting to make it work

well... you could get it to work by putting it in parallel with a 200ohm resistor but as Craig said... it won't be linear anymore but I think should be enough as a temporary setup before you get the right part.

Not perfect, like the 510 connector is off-center bc i was originally gonna make it a top button mod but the drill bit walked a bit :\ but it works well for now! Connector/drip cup are very solid and it will hold me over while my darwin is in for repairs

Booyah. My next one im going to attempt etching my own pcb design or get one made (if I can ever figure out this damn cad software). Digital pot, on/off switch, figure out some kind of low battery indication. Maybe even integrated 2-cell usb charging if I can find the right chip.

Just thought I'd show off my crappy soldering job Hopefully Santa will bring me a better soldering iron for christmas..
I had to solder on the top side of the pcb cuz the pins on the 8060 weren't poking through the pcb holes all the way. Its ugly, but it should work.

ya, its not too bad considering my soldering iron is a 10 year, 10 watt, filthy tipped throw away I got in one of those $4.99 bins at NAPA.

I made a horrible mess trying to solder an OKR chip to one of those boards. Would definitely be easier if the spacing matched the pins on the chips better, but then again my soldering skills are pretty non-existent. Set it aside for a while, I'll give it another go after I get a chance to finish carving my box (it's too damn cold right now and the gf won't let me do any woodworking in the house)

You should throw up some pics of your wood box your making. I've been wanting to make a wood box mod for a while but I've never known where to start on carving one out. You use a router, or are you literally carving it with some whittling knives? I made a box out of 1/8in steel welding it together. It didn't come out at all how I wanted.. an epic fail
No pics just yet, it's still just a plain ol' hunk of black walnut and a pile of half-assembled components ;-) I'll be roughing out the cavity as much as I can with a chisel, then finishing it off with a dremel and various carving bits. I'd love to do one hand-carved, but I just don't have the tools or experience. I'll definitely post pics when I get around to the final build
